I don't agree with him.... I am having a heart rate monitor it proves to me as a gr8 tool,i can push myself the extra in the treadmill, i can maintain my heart rate to be in the intensity zone to burn fat,i can have a look at my calories burned every second and even have a summary of daily,weekly,monthly and total workouts....
Now tat motivates me...and helps me....

I've seen a video from him in the past, and I thought he was an idiot after that, but I partially agree with him here. Hrms are not necessary for losing weight. They can be useful though.
His "people at the gym are working at too high of a heart rate" (not a direct quote, but I don't care to watch it again to get his exact words) was kinda stupid though, because it depends a lot on the person and what their goals are. Plus, it's more beneficial to vary the heart rate zones one works out in.

I looked at a few of his video's. That guy has just enough knowledge to be dangerous LOL... He does have some good info but he mixes it with bad advice which taints the whole. To be avoided is the best advice.
Hmmm I disagree with him too. I dont own a HR monitor, but I have used them before and they seem very accurate. They are especially good tools for people who arent in the greatest shape (like me :S) and dont really know how hard they should be working out in the first place. HR monitors keep people from overworking themselves AND from slacking off too much...

I disagree with him to a certain extent. My particular HRM measures the calories burned.
Before I got my HRM, I was using the estimations from C.C.'s database for my activities. But I was horribly hungry, and felt like I was starving to death.
The HRM revealed that I was burning more calories a day than the estimation. And the difference was a couple hundred calories... which for me is a lot.
Once I started basing everything on the HRM's calculations of calories expended, I felt fine, wasn't weak, light-headed and tired, and kept losing weight.

Is it totally neccessary to have a HRM cause i dont have one but I know when im working out im sweating like a pig so my heart has to be going pretty good.

It's like putting down calorie counting over just listening to your body to figure out how much to eat.  Here's a tool that can help you lose weight and get stronger... it seems like this would be something to encourage others to get so they really could know the intensity of their workouts.
Expecially those of us counting our calories. Â It is quite a chore at times to try and figure out how many calories I really did burn on a long bike ride or while out running or whatever. Â But even trying to gain speed in running, a hrm could help me push myself closer to my limit without going over and burning out. Â Â That would be VERY helpful to me right now, but I can't afford to spend the money on it.

angie - sweating doesn't necessarily have any effect on your workout intensity. I sweat like a pig doing weights and my heart rate never gets above 100. During my cardio class I'm drenched but then too my heart rate really isn't intense for long. Heck I sweat sleeping LOL Gotta love perimenopause hahaha

I think for those of us who have a quick recovery rate doing the pulse ck doesn't work - if I stop working out just to walk to the bathroom my heart rate can recover from 156 to 98 in about 10 seconds so if I am counting for 10 seconds my pulse isn't going to really reflect what effort I was doing at the time. Also my calorie burn can vary day to day doing the same routine cuz of my personal VO2.
Anyway I don't agree with this guy and not only that he didn't look like he was in the best of shape to be giving advise. Heck he looked down right unfit and chubby imho not muscular bulk just flab!!!

I have a HRM, I've had it for years and I actually agree with everything this guy said. If you want a HRM get one and use it but as he said you don't need one to know when you are getting a good workout. As far as Cals burned on your HRM? It is still an estimate like any number you get from a machine or a website. Maybe a better estimate, maybe.
