Do u diet but not exercise?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi, I want to hear from those who are doing good watching calories and drinking lots of water but not exercising.  How are you doing? how many pounds a week do you lose.  I just dont like exercising and just want to take it slow so would like to know the results. I'm obese and would like to lose 20-25 pounds atleast for my sister's wedding without killing myself. Thank you :)

I hardly exercise (probably like only once in two months?) and I lost 22lbs this year. The trick is to eat healthy and avoid sugary foods completely for at least a month. I know it's hard but it's possible. :) I also avoided carbs like rice and bread but I eventually began eating them again (as well as sugary foods like cakes and ice cream). :D As long as you watch your diet, you can have fun and enjoy the end result!

You don't have to kill yourself to do exercise but, in terms of your overall health prospects as well as your weight it's a good idea to try to work activity into your regular day. It's worth making just a little effort rather than being totally immobile.....   A good technique is to get hold of a pedometer and aim to get 10,000 steps a day.  It's not 'killing yourself' but it's reasonably challenging and it'll get your metabolism ticking along just that little bit faster... making weight-loss easier.  Simple things like parking the car further from your destination, walking up stairs instead of taking the lift or escalator, taking a short walk around the block at lunchtime.... Quickly adds up.  Other 'non-gym' activities.... gardening, dancing, swimming, conservation work, cycling.... anything that isn't sitting on your tushie counts!

If you enjoy food and don't enjoy feeling hungry you can eat more if you exercise.  A sedentary 200lb woman might only need 1800 cals a day to maintain her weight... so she'll have to cut her calories to 1300 (very little food) to start losing weight in any meaningful way.   The same 200lb woman being lightly active (10,000 steps a day or half an hour of something else) will find she can maintain her weight on 2400.  So if she went with a calorie intake of 1500-1700 she'd lose weight much quicker than the first example.

So even if you don't like the idea of formal exercise or gyms, try to find fun ways to be active because it really pays off.

I'm not an expert on weight loss and dieting by any strech of the imagination.

So I'll start with that when answering your question.

I think it depends partially on the type of person you are. If you have the capacity to be really strict about what you eat to maintain a certain calorie deficit each week... Then that's great. But if you enjoy food too much to limit your calorie intake, then exercising regularly to reach that deficit might be a better idea for you.

I'm a smoker who just hasn't gotten the motivation to kick the habit. With that in mind, I rarely, rarely exercise. It's just too rough on me. 30 seconds of cardio and I have to rest.

I started dieting in early November and I've lost 12 lbs. So it is possible to lose weight without exercise. But like I said, I'm not an expert. And I have no idea how long my weight loss will continue before I hit a plateau.

As soon as I get motivated to quit smoking, I fully intend to get my endurance up for regular workout sessions. Not only will I be able to eat more, but I'd expect my weight loss to excel even further.

Well, id say you should exersise, but its all up to you, i just want to tell you will even feel better if you exersise :):)

i've been counting calories since mid june and have lost 23 pounds with no "exercise". but i do have two small children to keep up with so i wouldn't say my life especially sedentary.  Smile

i still have 27 pounds that i'd like to lose and expect that i'll have to up my activity level as some point to achieve this. (not making any changes during the holiday season. i'll just be happy to maintain. LOL) the reason i expect to have to make that change is that it's been difficult to keep my calories down to 1300 as it is and as i get closer to my goal the calculators here tell me i need to eat less (i started off eating 1450), or exercise more to be able to reach my goal by the end of may. i suppose if i let go of the may goal then i would probably lose all the weight eventually, but i've got a big to-do in may so i think i'll keep the goal... for now.  Laughing

Hey there... to answer your question, when I started actively trying to lose weight at the end of June, I simply began counting calories and skipped exercising almost completely with the exception of the occasional walk up until the end of July. I then added walking 5 k every other day in August and started swimming 3 times per week in September. I am still doing both and have added other activities as well.

Looking back, my reasoning (read: "excuse") for not exercising was that I just didn't feel up for it, however I now understand that I was lacking energy and thus felt no desire to exercise...

RE: your comment about taking it slow, I was losing weight at an OK rate (about 3 - 5 lbs) by just couting calories and not exercising BUT I still felt 'squishy' and I hated that! I am still losing weight at more or less the same rate but I feel completely different -- energized, happy, strong. So please don't think of exercising as being your death sentence! you can still take it slow by adding even the simplest of activities to your daily routine and no, you don't have to start running 5 k today... =) go for a walk, go swimming, go biking, get on a swing, ANYTHING that you enjoy really will help.

Another thing, I started off with a 1200 cal/per day limit which was horrible! by adding exercise I was able to increase my cal limit per day to a very doable limit and couldn't be happier.

Give it a try! good luck!

if you like food, exercise is a good trade-off.

remember, as you lose weight, the number of calories you burn being sedentary goes down.  so right now (i don't know how big you are, so i'm guessing), you might be able to eat 2000 or more a day and still lose, but as you get closer to a healthy weight, that number is going to drop.

maybe you're willing to live the rest of your life on 1200 or 1300 a day; me, i'd rather exercise a little and not have to restrict.

About 4 years ago I lost 65 pounds on weight watchers.  I followed the plan strictly and ate really good foods.  Veggies, fruits and chicken.  Drank plenty of water and didn't exercise at all.  Didn't have the desire to and really didn't want to.  I was going through hardship in my life and just wanted to lose the weight.  I got to my goal weight and have kept it off for almost 5 years now.  Now that I am at the weight I have been exercising 4-5 times a week because I feel more comfortable with myself but when I was dieting I didn't.  I don't encourage you  not to exercise but diet alone can get the job done.  If you can go for a 20 minute walk every day just to keep the body going.  Good luck

If you don't exercise, you will end up "fat skinny" , when people are really thin, but it's sort of gross and they're not toned at all...

Plus like other posters have said, exercise will allow you to eat a little more. If you supposedly don't like exercise, you probably just haven't found a good one for you yet. I personally love swimming, so I swim laps a lot for my exercise instead of running on the treadmill every day (although I do that too).

Exercise will build more muscle, even just cardio will build a little more muscle than you would have if you never exercised, and muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does, so overall exercising helps you lose fat a little easier. People with more muscle tend to have higher metabolisms because it takes more to keep all of those muscles running smoothly.

Maybe just try taking a walk outside for 30 minutes, or some work out videos are great. Even if you played Wii Sports or Wii Fit a few days a week, that would be better than nothing.

take it easy and start with your diet first.  with your stats you should have no problem losing weight with no exercise.  eat healthy and eat enough.

as for being skinny fat, you can lose up to 30 or so pounds with diet first and then start to do strength training to get your metabolism up and avoid the skinny fat.

I've lost 83 pounds in 11 months with no exercise. i started at 277 and i'm at 193ish now. I'm sure exercise would be better for me but i'm not a huge fan yet. i'm working on it lol! Happy holidays!
