I was tricked!

I ate sun maid cinnamon swirl raisin bread this morning and when i put it down on my list of foods, I was puzzled looking at my analysis because cholesterol showed up.. but I'm a vegan? I don't eat cholesterol.... and I didn't understand...

BUT as it turns out, THAT BREAD WAS NOT VEGAN! I feel ill.. milk is in my stomach.... blllllargh!

Always read labels! Dammit! Dammit!

Sorry for the outburst. I just needed to get that out! God I feel gross!

oh honey iam sorry, evil sun maid people.

=glares at sun maid people=
ewwww grossssss.  Stuff like that sucks.
That'll teach you to read labels won't it!!!
Your mind is disgusted?
Your body couldn't tell the difference until your mind comprehended it?

Owell, make yourself feel better by comparison.  I ate porkchops last night and I slather butter all over my toast :)

das1988, I rather imagine that you would feel a bit disgusted if you either ate a bug, or ate something that was slightly moldy, but you didn't notice the flavor of it in your food.  You might not feel any reaction to it physically until you become aware, but once you are aware most people would tend to feel a bit sick to their stomach with the knowledge.

Same for anyone in this forum (the vegetarian forum) who inadvertently eats something that is off-limits.

:)

Sorry you had to go through that greasygemo!!

das1988: Your body "forgets" how to digest animal protein if you go without for long enough.  For instance, I pay days of pennace in the bathroom if a restaurant lies to me about the vegetarian-ness of their food, or if my food was cooked on the same surface as meat products.  It's not psychosomatic because sometimes it happens when I was sure I was eating 100% vegetarian.

Growing up I kept kosher in the house. We had to look for symbols on the stuff we bought that indicated whether food was kosher, and then if it was dairy, meat, or neutral (eggs and fish, oddly enough are considered neutral). We couldn't mix meat and milk, so paying attention to labels was crucial.

You have to read labels on anything that's packaged.

I feel bad for you, it always sucks when you're surprised like that.  I hope you feel better.

However, you weren't tricked and it isn't Sun Maid's fault.  I congratulate you on your choice of lifestyle, but it takes quite a bit of work (we all make mistakes, so I don't blame you either).

The good news is - you're going to live.

Question though.  What's the motivation for most people to become vegan?  Just curious.

im vegan because animal foods sick me out. flesh and fluids.. bleh!!

i agree they say that vegetarians or vegans live longer but i dont believe that. because you need your protein

Don't ask.  I've made the innocent inquiry in the past and got flamed all to hell for it by the vegs.

aww I'm sorry :(

I'm a new vegan, and even the thought of drinking milk (i did some research and ICK!) makes me a little sick.

***patting greasygemo on the back***

I understand.

Most of us are vegan because we can't stand the thought of eating an animal corpse.  Which is what it is.

Just as we also wouldn't cannibalize. drink human breast milk (as adults) or eat human ova, we can't stomach the thought of eating another being's fluids or tissue as well.

Also, we do it for the planet.  Veganism is the most carbon-neutral diet available.  A vegan doesn't use huge amounts of water to feed cows, pigs, whatever, to get a much smaller amount of viable protein than we can get from plant foods.

But most of all, we are vegans because of our life philosophy.  We are against cruelty to other creatures.  They have as much right to exist on this planet as we do.

And contrary to what most omnivores think, a vegan diet is healthful and delicious!  I don't see death on my plate.  And (sorry O/L veggies) I don't see cruelty on there either.

There are MANY other protein sources besides animal flesh.

I'm not totally veggie yet but have been on and off for most of my life. I've also just given up dairy as I think it's just weird for adult humans to be drinking something meant for baby cows. We don't still breastfeed do we and that would be a lot more natural.

Also, cows are pumped full of antibiotics (hence so are meat and milk) which is causing the huge problem of antibiotic resistance (MRSA etc). Cows are kept constantly pregnant so we are drinking milk full of cow pregnancy hormones. Yum! Cows often get infections in their udders so we are drinking their pus.

I do eat free range eggs, don't see the cruelty in that and I think once I've finished off the meat in my freezer (can't waste food!) and become a non lacto veggie I will occasionally eat some responsibly sourced oily fish, or some that my boyfriend has caught himself.

Actually, our bodies can tell the difference, but probably not instantly. Like if I drink milk, I get extreme chronic diarrhoea that lasts for 2 days :D

It is the same as being disgusted if you realised you ate human flesh, or something you consider disgusting and unnatural. Vegans have that same repulsed feeling.
