Ugh, shin splints

Quote  |  Reply

So here's the story. I hate treadmills, so I run the track at my gym. I usually go in, stretch, run a mile, go lift weights for a half hour or so, then come back up and run for about 5-10 more minutes at a decent pace. Then I pant my way out of the gym :P

My shins have been killing me though, and I know it's not because of form (I keep my head up, shoulders back, roll off my toes into the next step, breathe regularly, etc). I'm starting to think it's because maybe I'm doing too much/I'm too heavy to push myself as much as I have been.

I'm 245 lbs at 6'0"...trying to get down to somewhere around 190 lbs -- yeah, long way to go. I do this routine 4-5 times a week, usually 5 times.

Is it just too much?

Shorten your stride, up your calcium and protein, and stretch often. Your weight may very well be the major source of your problems, and if that's so then shoes with more cushioning may also help alleviate the pain.

Good luck :)

i suffered from shin splints during my soccer season...and it wasnt fun.

Try investing in some gel soles...they really do help. Also, ice your shins after you take a shower after working out. I believe its 20 mins on, 40 mins off. You might want to research about that though.

Mine took a little over 4 months to heal...not to worry though...i did not take care of my shins too well because of my soccer season.

best of luck!
I had shin splints last month and had to stop running for a few days.. fortunately I had an appointment with my chiropractor that week. he did something where he like tugged on my ankles. the next day i felt great and started running again... I am convinced that my chiropractor has the answers to all my health problems... lol
