So at work today we had a potluck, as much as I tried to stay away from it I finally gave in and took a small plate of food, and then another one...and then a plate of deserts!

Now I dont know what to do...I have only lost 4lbs since being on my diet and I dont want to ruin all that effort just because of one pot luck! (although I should have thought of this BEFORE grabbing plates of food!)

So my question is, what now? Do I eat normally for the rest of the day? or Compensate by eating less tonight for dinner?

I would say eat sensibly - DON'T EAT TO COMPENSATE!  You will set your body up for a blood sugar rollercoaster and risk throwing your body and diet out of whack for a day or two.

You didn't binge - you just indulged more than you would have perhaps liked!  It is part of life, what is more important is reflecting on it and developing strategies for times like this in the future - as there WILL be more times like these - so just see it as a lesson learned.  For example, next time, tell yourself you can have ONE plate with a small piece of three of the best looking items etc.

As for ruining all your hard work, don't worry you will be fine.  A pound of fat is equivalent of 3500 calories - so you would never have got 14,000 ( 4 lbs! ) on three platefuls of pot luck goodies!  Just don't get on the scales for a few days as you may be retaining a bit of fluid!

I hear you..I just had a day like that...only my downfall was shopping all day and then stopping for easy take-out for both lunch AND dinner. I could've had a salad, but everyone was having burgers...I could've had a veggie sub, but the pizza looked so good! Now I am just feeling sick, sick, SICK.

But I  plan to pick myself up and start over again tomorrow. I've been at this for about 6 months now and have had maybe a dozen days like this (remember Christmas?) I ALWAYS forgive myself and move on...well, once my belly stops aching I will forgive myself. Good thing weighin isn't until Thursday! I'll have some time to work this off! I've lost 40 pounds so far...even with that occaissional over-indulging, so IT CAN BE DONE!!

You'll be fine! Life is meant to have a few enjoyable splurges. Just don't do it every day!

I have had a similar day...actually past two days. I have been eating lots of sweets, but I know that tomorrow will be different. Actually I didnlt eat that much...but I did just have a chocolate chip muffin from Tim Hortons which I had no idea had like 430 cals and 16 g fat, so I feel kind of icky about that. I think when I am done work though I am going to kick my ass and go for a run. I haven't ran in a long time!!

Tomorrow will be all veggies and fruits for me. Eating sweets makes me feel extra icky cuz I am lactose intolerant...it sometimes makes my stomach hurt.

If I were you, I would just have a light supper and then eat halthy again tomorrow!! Don't beat yourself up over it...or you could do some sit ups when you get home. I might do that. I find it always helps because I sit at a desk all day so doing some sit ups when I get home makes me feel as though I didn't sit on my ass all day. ha ha

Thanks for all the replys guys! Now I dont feel so guilty knowing im not the only one out there who indulges every once in a while! It also makes me feel better knowing that this wont ruin all my efforts!

And congrats lilygirl for losing 40 lbs! if you dont mind me asking, how did you do it?

NEVER never never never never never ever compensate. Please. It's so much better to just leave your binge as an "oops!" than fall into a binge-starve cycle. Everything evens out by itself anyways, so you don't even need to think about compensating. We all have our little splurges and if you're already eating at a deficit its all good. :)

I think u have blown the day...so eat some to get you thru..

however before eating another meal or snack..mix 1 tablespoon psyllium in 1/2 glass of water or juice..do this whenever your super hungry or feel unsatisfied.

I have not had the desire to binge in nearly 4 months using it...give it try and let me know.

So keep on the diet but if the binge craving hits...try the psyllium drink first.
