The ultimate sandwich

Quote  |  Reply
  • Genuine Bavarian Whole Rye Bread (from Wholefoods)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 slice of black forest ham (from Costco)
  • 1 slice of honey roasted turkey (from Costco)
  • Fage 0%
  • Spices (black pepper, garam masala)
  • Sliced Veggies (cucumber, onion, tomato, romanie lettuce)
  • Mustard mix (dijorn, spicy, grained)

Directions:

To cook an egg heat a skillet spray it with cooking spray or (my method) damp paper towel in olive oil and wipe the skillet. Break an egg and add pepper and garam masala on one side. After few minutes flip it and let it cook through.

To assemble the sandwich spread some Fage 0% on the bread put some cubumbers, then layer turkey, tomato, ham, onion, egg, mustard mix, and rommanie lettuce on top to hold it all together.

Whole thing comes out to about 350 Calories, and is very filling! Plus it has a nice mix of fats, protein and complex carbohydrates. :)

P.S. Please do NOT post substituting eggs for egg whites or other such silliness it will ruin it. IMHO.

mmmmm i bet abit of mashed up avocado would do nicely on that as well

Yesssss! I can make my own version of it using egg beaters, diet bread and no meat, because it sounds really fatty! Come to think of it, bread is so not worth the calories anyway.. I will just have a couple lettuce leaves and call it a day.

Seriously now, thanks for the recipe, it made my mouth water. :] Hope to be able to somewhat accurately adapt it to what my local stores provide.

dondons - hmm Avacado should work, maybe instead of an egg, but it will probably need something more to add flavor.

ily51 - That was funny, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually thought of it as they were reading the post.  Most local stores should carry delli meats, as for bread it is also comes down to personal prefernce. I like that one on sandwiches because it is very dense and sliced thin. It has kind of that "hearty" feel to it.

UD - I ate a variation of that sandwich almost everyday lol.  But instead of egg and lunch meat I had authentic German rye bread (the hard crusty kind), 1 slice ham, 1 slice turkey and 1 slice either muenster or swiss cheese with mustard.  Now that is German heaven right there.  When I'm at home I just substitute the ham and turkey with authentic German lunchmeats [bierwurst, leberwurst, zungenwurst, gelbwurst, leberkaese, schinkenwurst]...although the only ones out of that list I eat are the bierwurst, gelbwirst and schinkenwurst.  German stuff is good!

I completely agree with you! When I was bumming around Germany with my cousin we ate what you just described! Then when we were in Prague I picked up some awesome sardines in olive and had it on the train on some nice black bread. Heaven on earth!

P.S. I wish I could find German lunchmeats here. :(

Out of curiousity, where are you, UD?

Out of curiousity, where are you, UD?

Currently I am in Bay Area, California.

Huh.  I am currently in Baltimore, MD.  Heavy German population out here. :)

You could try using yellowpages.com and search for german delis in your area...if you are seriously craving some German meats though.

EDIT: I did a little web surfing for you and found this http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/319676 ; It's a thread asking for a place that sells german products in the Bay Area and there are some responses.

I'm sorry if I am being forward or overly intrusive. Embarassed  I just think if people like it and aren't afraid of the content (caloric, fat, sodium, etc) of German food, then they should have the opportunity to have it and be happy.

No problem. Hmm the link didn't work.

UD

None of the links I post do. X{

Well you could copy and paste the link...unless you already did and it still didn't work.  I'm really clueless about posting links...like how some people can attach a link to a piece of text in their post.

BTW, I think I googled "german meat markets in Bay Area" and found that.  Now you can do your own leg work *chuckle*.

Sweet found one near me: http://www.dittmers.com/lunchmeats.htm

Mmmm Braunschweiger sandwich.

Anything you recommend? They also list "German Blood Rings" under sausages any idea what that is?

Thanks

UD

I've never had blutwurst (German blood sausage) so I don't know how it tastes.  It is what its name suggests: it is essentially blood pudding in a casing...pig blood, mixed with some fat and some pork&beef meat.  It is spicy and salty.

LUNCHMEATS: From what I've had I recommend bierwurst, schinkenwurst, gelbwurst and leberkaese.  Beirwurst is made from pork and spiced with whole mustard seeds...mild and just slightly salty.  Schinckenwurst is essentially ham, but it's less fat reduced than the stuff you'd get at a normal grocery.  Gelbwurst is very mild and soft.  It is essentially weisswurst in lunchmeat form...pork and veal, spiced with things like ginger and nutmeg and parsley and chives.  Leberkaese tastes for all intents and purposes like hot dog or bologna.  I had some zungenwurst before I realized that I really didn't want to be eating something made from cow tongue, but that meat is salty and kind of rich-tasting.

EDIT: My father likes to microwave a thick slice of leberkaese (about 30sec?) and have it with buttered slices of rye bread.

SAUSAGES: I recommend weisswurst, knockwurst, bratwurst, bauernwurst and debrezinerwurst.  I listed them in order from mildest to spiciest.  Weisswurst like the gelbwurst above is pork, veal and mild spices.  Knockwurst is essentially the German version of American hotdogs but better because they don't taste as processed.  Bratwurst is mostly made from pork, but sometimes with a little veal.  It is subtly spiced, kind of salty and peppery, not very spicy but spicier than weisswurst.  Bauernwurst is a little spicier than bratwurst.  It's made from pork and beef, spiced with mustard seeds and marjoram and smoked.  I've only just started liking this sausage...it used to be too spicy for my tastes.  Finally, the spiciest sausage...Debrezinerwurst.  This little baby is smoked pork and beef spiced with garlic and sweet paprika.  My mom loves spicy and she loves this.

I also recommend crusty German rye bread....bread with a shell, you know.  Really makes you work.

Kool thanks! Thezungenwurst sound awesome! I love cow tongue! I usually boil it with bunch of herbs then eat it with some mushrooms and potatoes. I make sandwiches with left overs. While it is still hot I can eat entire thing in one seating. lol.

No problem! I love my German heritage to death.  I have a phrase that made me feel good back when I was overweight..."I'd rather be a fat German than a skinny Asian."  It's stereotyping but traditional German food is more appealing to me than traditional Chinese/Japanese/Korean food....also for the most part (at least what is publicized) Asians are slimmer than Germans. I know that it's not true in all cases and whatnot but I liked to say it.  Now I can say "I'd rather be a slim German than a slim Asian."  Sausages and meat all the way!  Laughing

I like Asian food also. :)

Anyway I replaced the egg with Dofino Creamy Havarti Cheese. MMM delicious! The cheese added this umm creaminess to it. I have also tried it with roughy fillet, instead of deli meats, with some horse radish. Soo good! Damn I love sandwiches. :)

UD

Oh yeah, I have nothing against Asian food....it's just it seems that Asian cuisine is a lot less fatty than German cuisine.  Oh well...

What you did with you sandwich (the replacements above) sounds good, although I don't believe I have ever had havarti cheese nor ruffy.  My dad loves orange ruffy. If it's on the menu as a special when we go out he always gets it. :)  What does havari cheese taste like?  And amen to using horseradish!  I love having a nice piece of Polska Kielbasa with horseradish. MMMM delicious!

Sometimes at Easter we have red horseradish (it's a little sweeter...horseradish mixed with beet juice) with the kielbasa and pickled hard boiled eggs (pickled in beet juice with the beets).  Now that is good stuff.

I guess you haven't tried the Americanized Chinese food lol. Last time I was at this dim sum place I ordered octopus stir fry. I could not even finish it because all I could taste is oil.

Oh yeah I put orange ruffy on it. It has a very light taste so I think it can go well with just about anything. The cheese tastes creamy. That is the best description I can give for it.

I just had a blast reading through you guys' posts on German food - and I was surprised to find out that a lot of the things you were mentioning (blood sausage, cow tongue with herbs) are also very typical of Argentine cuisine, which is where I am from originally.  Anyway, I found the similarities very interesting!

Btw, umneydurak, if you like cow tongue you might want to try it the way Argentines have it - always served cold either as an appetizer, with a side salad, or used as a lunch meat.

Sorry to butt in, but I had to comment ;)

Yep I definitely use it on sandwiches the next day. :) Thanks for the link!

P.S. I just wish I knew how many calories are in raw beef tongue. Seems very fatty so I am guessing a lot. lol

UD

It's actually on CC!  (Unbelievable!)
