Under active throid
I was just diganosed with under active thyroid and put on levothyroxin. Someone told me I will gain weight on this medicine. I have been working out and on a restriced diet for about a month or two and have lost 10 pounds. Have been on the medicine almost a week and have gained 3 pounds. I am still working out and dieting. Low Carb omlette for breakfast, Lean Cuisine for lunch and dinner. What else can I do? Any one else on this medicine? Or have suggestions?

SOUL SISTA!! I have the same medicine!
Weight gain is pretty typical for that medicine, but since you're new to it, it'll take some time for it to settle into your system. I've been on the medicine for a couple years now.
I suggest wait a couple weeks for it to settle into your system. Eat enough to maintain for this time and then after the new medicine settles, start exercising. ^^
Good luck!
I'm on the same meds as well. What dosage are you on?
I take 20 mcg and haven't noticed it causing any weight gain. However, I have noticed that it takes MUCH longer to lose weight. I was putting that up to being older (I'm 55). Hmmmm....
Hope you will be feeling better soon. I had absolutely no energy before I took the meds. Now I am up to just 'not much' energy, lol. My hormone level is where it is supposed to be, though.
i always thought that the thyroid medicine would make it easier to lose the weight, by making the thyroid more normal.
it is harder to lose weight with and under active thyroid, the medication is trying to make your thyroid more normal.
i've never heard of weight gain with thyroid meds like levoxyl. ask the pharmacist.
good luck.
My medicine is Levothyroxin 50 mcg. I had no energy, was cold all the time and ached alot. I need to give this a few weeks to get in my system. I pulled a muscle exercising with too heavy weights, went from 5 pds to 10 pds then down to 8. So I need to heal the shoulder before I can go back to the weights. I am still riding my stationary bike every other day, but the weight after the 3 pound gain is staying the same. Guess I'll just play it by ear.
Thanks for all the advice.
i would suggest you get some idoine supplements or increase the amount of fish in your diet like for instance 3-4 servings of fish/seafood. also i would avoid soya products if you are drinking or eating any,as soya in high volumes suppress thyroid functioning especially if you arent getting even idoine to balance that out.
levothoroxine is levoxyl i think just the generic. (i think it is also the same as synthriod thats just another brand name).
i honestly do not think the medicine causes weight gain, i think if anything being on it will help make weight loss easier.
it is the underactive thyriod that makes weight gain easier.
I wouldn't worry about the medicine, but ask the pharmacist i could be wrong.
anyway i hope your shoulder starts feeling better and the thyriod symptoms should start improving.
keep up the cycling - working out helps my dieting progress most.
I also have an underactive throid. :(
I am also on this same medication. I've been on it for 8 years. Once your hormones equal out, it will be easier to lose weight. You will continue to gain weight fairly easy but you will also be able to lose it easier.
Good luck.
I am sorry to hear about your gain - but at the same time i am jumping for joy because I thought I had lost my mind, I was put on synthroid in Oct of last year at which time I had lost over 100 lbs and was still losing fairly consistently, since Oct, I have gained almost 35 lbs and haven't changed anything else about my diet or exercise routines except the medicine.
I have been resistant to call the doctor because since I started to take the meds, my hair has started growing back and I don't feel as ache-y and tired as I used to.
I am going to call her today, becasue at 5 lbs a month I will have gained all my weight back and then some - I hope they have an alternative, I hate being so heavy but I really like feeling better :(
I'll come back and let you know what she says... missbetty
I have had hypothyroid disease since I was 25 yrs old and the only problem I ever had with medication was them finding the right dose for me. Once they found it I went from 198 to 135 from exercising 5 days a week and eting almost the same as before. I did drink lots of water. Everyone is different I was advised to never drink a generic brand of thyroid medicine and I haven't. I hope this helps or makes you feel better!
I have been on Levothyroxin for several years now. I have gained and lost on it. I think the medication has NOTHING to do with it, but rather how conistent you are with diet and exercise.
If you tell yourself your weight gain is because of your thyroid, you give yourself permission not to lose or eat more, and similarily if you try to lose by reducing calories too much, you tend to binge when your hunger gets the better of you. So don't eat too little, be consistent with food, exercise, and medication.
I heard this saying and it makes lots of sense. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and diner like a pauper.
I've been on it for a few months now and haven't noticed a difference. I think it's a mental thing like some people think it's supposed to be harder to lose so they dont lose or gain and use the under active thyroid as an excuse. I have a very underactive thyroid and I have lost 25 lbs in the last 3 months.
