under right rib stomach cramp when jogging- HELP

Quote  |  Reply

How do I prevent this? I get it usually near the end of a jog (when I am pushing myself a little) sometimes i have to stop to walk it off while stretching overhead.... I want to make it through and entire "run" without stopping, but if I try to work through the cramp, it hurts even more.....

Suggestions to stop before it starts?

i know someone here has a suggestion

This is sometimes called a side stitch.  People have different theories as to why it happens.  Some think dehydration.  I had them all the time when I first started exercising.  As my physical fitness improved, they went away.  Sometimes I'll still get one here and there after a few days of no exercise, but its not very often.  If you do a search for side stitch you'll be able to read about possible causes and suggestions to stop them from occurring.

Edit:  When I would get one while running (usually at mile 1), right when I felt it coming on, I'd walk for about 5 minutes.  I'd start running again and it would be gone.

thanks for the suggestion for the term to look up- I've heard it before, but it just didn't come to mind... Thanks!

I posted this on the Run Around the World Thread, too.

I agree, it sounds like a regular, run-of-the-mill stitch. When it happens, go slower and walk if you need to. Please don't push through it. Listen to your body, and in the end your running will be better off. When I get them, I try putting that arm above my head, but really the only thing that ends up helping is running much slower.

Also, when you run, go slower overall and don't push at the end. This will help you run for longer amounts of time and farther. When you want to work on going fast, pick a shorter distance than you usually run and run that just a tad faster than you would normally.

I found this article for you on the Runners World website:

GOOD LUCK!

This used to happen to me if I ate right before exercising. Not sure if that's the cause, necessarily, but it seemed like it always happened to me that way.
