An unexpected weight loss :)

One of my "male" guinea pigs just had babies!! We have two of the cutest little ones you ever saw. Pics will be forthcoming. Boy, what a surprise, although I had said a couple of times that I suspected Punkie might be pregnant, but b/c "he" was male, I kept thinking I must be wrong and he'd just gotten really fat!!  Well, SHE is looking pretty slim now! (Geez, if only it were that easy for humans!!)

My kids are THRILLED, and a big push is on to keep them both. That will depend entirely upon what sex they are. God knows how I'll figure that out; if the pet store owners were wrong, I probably don't stand a chance!   Oh, my--an unplanned pregnancy and now I'm a grandma!  (that's "mom's" picture with my name, and "daddy" is on my profile.

Do you have the dad or did she come pregnant? Pretty incompetent pet store owner lol.

Anyway have fun with the new babies, I miss having baby rats :P

Out of curiosity I watched some youtube videos of baby guinea pigs...I'm shocked lol, they are like fully formed, I'm used to rodents being born as little undeveloped pink things. Not to mention those are some big babies to give birth to :O

I want a guinea pig!!!

i think they are the only animal in that rodent esque family who's babies are up and running within minutes.

mkculs you could always just get separate cages for them, if you plan on keeping them all. No need to worry about more babies then! haha. but i don't know if you'd have the space for all that.

Awww ... what a surprise!  Baby guinea pigs are so cute.

Yes, separate cages are definitely a must until you've confirmed the gender of the little piggies.  Also males that are housed together may become territorial and fight.  Good luck with your newly expanded clan of piggies.

I had a very similar thing happen with a stray cat I took in. When I took her in to my house we went to the vet because I wanted to make sure that she was healthy. She was extremely thin and I wanted to make sure that she wasn't pregnant... the vet offered to do the spaying for free, but in the two weeks it took to get everything scheduled she had two little babies. Mollie was only 6 pounds and did not show her baby weight at all, so I really was surprised! Anyway, one Sunday I am sitting on the couch studying for an exam and I look over to see a little knot on the side of her belly (the kitten's head moving around). Anyway, I don't think Mollie knew what was coming because she never even nested, I had to get the laundry basket out with a towel and get her ready. She had Allie and Ollie just a couple of hours later! It was so amazing... those little ones were adorable and for an unprepared mother, she did great! Btw, she was only about a year old herself when she had her babies... anyway, the babies now live my cousin and my parents have Mollie... she is the queen of the house and loves it! :-)

I already took Daddy out--although from what I've read, it may have been too late! Apparently they will mate again as soon as the babies are born--wow, talk about grounds for divorce!!!

But I hope mama doesn't have more; the surprise was pleasant and if they are a boy and girl, we'll keep 'em to pair with the parents and have 4--but that is my husband' limit! And I do not want my little girl having more babies; it's not good for her! She's just a baby herself, less than 6 months old! I would never have PLANNED this, that is for sure!

I'll post pics soon, so check back in a day or so!

Thanks for all the fun replies. I know I'm not the only one it has happened to!
