Unique clothes that don't fit...

Quote  |  Reply

What do you do with clothes that are too big for you but you can't easily replace them?  I have a great looking 1960s leather jacket from UK that isn't made anymore.  I've thought that maybe there are taylors who could take it in a lot, but I imagine that's expensive...and what if I have to (hopefully) take it in again?  I also thought I could just give it to a trusty seamstress to make me a new one at the right size...anyone had a situation like this before?

Also, a month or so ago I bought a vintage suit that I knew was too small for me but hoped to one day fit into it.  I figured it'd be inspirational, now it's sort of a reminder of delayed progress...should I give it away/tossi t?

I enjoy shopping at vintage shops when I'm back in the US so I understand what you're saying. Take the jacket to a tailor with a good reputation and just see if he/she could alter it and how much it would cost. I would only tailor it once though.

KEEP THE SUIT! Im sure its really cool, and I know that for me, even when I feel like I may not be getting any close to my goal, having a reminder of it keeps me on track. I say to myself "Those 0s dont fit today, and they probably wont fit tomorrow or the next day, but if I keep working hard, they are going to fit me a hell of a lot sooner than if I just give up now"

I might talk to myself too much lol hmm... But I agree with alibsam about the jacket. Or you could just wait until you get down to the size that you are happiest at, and then getting the jacket tailored or recreated to your size could be your reward!

I agree with the two previous posters. Hang onto that jacket, wait until you are at a size you are pleased with and then find out how much it would be to get it tailored, it never hurts to find out.

As for the suit, you never know when you will find another gem like that, hang onto it. It will be really rewarding when you reach your goal. I had a pair of jeans that were about 4 sizes to small, and I debated on keeping them. Now I'm glad I did because they were a constant motivation for me. And the day I slipped them on and zipped them up was reason to celebrate!

I had a similar problem (sort of)....all of my clothes dont fit me any more so what I did was instead of trying to sell them....I gave them to my friends and family...what they didnt take I donated to the good will and the veterans association (which take clothes)

As for the suit that is too small I would hang on to it and if you feel that its a goal that you still desire...then by all means shoot for it.  Remember its "just a goal" or "desire" dont beat yourself up if you dont make it today.

For the leather jacket i'd suggest taking it to a place that specialises in making leather garments.  You should be able to find one in any large town/city.  Regular tailors might not have the experience to work with leather and make a good job of it.

Hang on to the suit.  You can always get rid of it later if you want to.  If you manage to fit it then yay! awesome!

I consigned my nicer clothes to a good resale boutique.  I got enough money to buy a few new pieces, not as many as I consigned though.  You won't get back what you paid.  The less nice ones went to charity thrift shops.
