Unsupportive People around you?

Quote  |  Reply

I look around and well *poof* to my surprise I've become the fat friend. That motivated me to be here today.  Good start right, ... of course!  Well I have made this clear to both my b/f and my brother (both of whom I live with).  I have basically pleaded for them to help me.  I am not asking them to feed me but stop offering me crap and having crap around me and maybe go on a bike ride or a walk or two.  I'm not asking a lot am I?

A lil' history... the boyfriend... he can eat his weight in Spaghetti-O's and pop tarts and still manage to loose weight or stay the same while sitting on the couch all day watching sports. ((grumble))  He is not overweight by any means and looks great... okay, yes I am jealous of this.

My brother who is one year younger than me, can eat crap, workout and drop weight just by saying the word. Is it because they are boys and my hormones seem to be holding on to every vittle of fat that they can?

I am a vegetarian, I eat vegetables and yummy goodness in small portions, yet no matter how hard I try I can't seem to shed a freaking pound.  I admit I don't exercise much, but I do work 15 hour days about 5 days a week, so sleep is precious.  It feels like I drink my weight in water every day. I know I'm exaggerating but when I am making a trip to the restroom every 1/2 hour it seems to get old quickly.

Any ideas on how I can get the support from the people closest to me?  I know I can do it, but I don't want to do this alone and would love to have the people that love me help me out some ya know??

Thanks for listening. :)

Im sorry to hear that you dont have a better live in support system, but lets give them a little credit. Very few men can understand how food habits can affects women....How can we expect them to? We hardly understand it ourselves.  Men seem to have the luxury of eating a lot more than we can and not gain. Thats just how it goes.

My advice to you to you is to go ahead and make whatever changes to your diet or lifestyle to help you achieve your weightloss goals. Let your brother and boyfriend know about what changes youre going to make and you will need to tell them *clearly* what they can do to help you. If you purchase your own foods that they need to keep their mitts off of, be clear about it. Im sure that they would respect you for that...along with whatever other changes you need to make. And if they arent supportive enough, then you have CC!

Bleh!  My situation is kind of different from yours but also similar.

I'm about to go home from college for the first time since summer, and over the holidays which are prime weight-gain season obviously.

My parents do not care one whit about health!   Since I moved out I have been eating so much better simply because I'm not REQUIRED to sit down to a nice greasy simple carb dinner every night.   I've tried to talk to them about the food, I've offered to cook, I've tried saying that we should just eat dinner seperately, but no.   Dinner is family time and they'll take care of it thank-you-very-much-we're-the-parents-how-dar e-you.  And I have a whole month of it coming up when I go home friday.

DDDDDDDDDDD:

And the kicker is that the only way I can get out of it is to go out to eat with my friends.  Looks like I'm going to be eating a lot of 12 dollar salads this month...

wellll ahem ahem

i think i can help u out here......i live with two brothers who would eat junk infront of me allllll dayyyyyy........ burger king...pizza hut..... chocolates

and yes even tho i was working very hard to lose weight i did end up binging a couple of times............ now wat did i do to solve this prob

very simple............. i COOKED

i cooked the most amazing yummmy meals for them at home

pasta....... indian........ chinese.....nice tasty healthy food

and welll ..its kinda emotional blackmail.... u know ur lil sis is staying home and making u such tasty dinner and u wud still opt for mc donald.....:(....sniff sniff

sooo it actually worked......they stopped bringing junk home

at times i wud wake up early morning and make thisss whole big luxurious irani breakfast for them hehehe that wud keep their tummy full for the day..... and no binging infront of me...hehehe

and ohh yesss u must be wondering how did i control myself from eating all that food.....well i guesss when u`re cooking the meal ur apetite is decresed.... and welll its easier to avoid home food than branded junk lol

and even if u do end up binging a bit of ur own cooked meal..... its not that harmful.Wink

hope i was helpful

I was like that in college but the year before graduation and every year there after it hasn't worked out that way for me.   Then again my more sports oriented lifestyle and job where I stood the whole time changed to a behind the desk one... so it's a trade off.

Given what you are doing, and yet you aren't losing weight... is it that you aren't eating enough calories and getting enough sleep?

Thanks for the posts.

I do believe that I very well might not be eating enough calories.  I don't want to  go and seek out fatty items just to get calories though.  I eat lots (at least it seems that way) but it's all very low calorie items, like veggies and salads.  Most of my calories come from sauce and dressing.  I sit behind a desk for 8-9 hours a day and then go to a semi-physical job after that for about 4-5 hours. My part time job is at a restaurant so I get lots of great salads there.

Last December I broke my right arm in 3 places and haven't been able to do the exercises that require anything from your arm so it's really limited me to walking.  In October I finally had the final surgery to repair my arm and it is the best that it's been since I broke it.  With that in mind I am trying to get back into gear about getting off my butt.  I am not a belly-acher by any means, I just need motivation and some new fresh ideas.

So working 15 hours almost every day and being a tiny bit physically limited I feel like I am running out of options, I feel like starving myself is the only option (but don't worry the minute my tummy growls, I know I can't do that).

We are planning on getting married in the summer of 2010 and I want to look & feel the best ever. HELP!!

I think the biggest problem here is no protein intake. For your body to actually burn calories and to keep your metabolism up you need to at least work out 3 times a week for 30 minutes and get some protein in your diet. Also, if you can find the time (I know how hard it is to do that!) work out in the mornings on an empty stomache (save for a glass of water you should drink before working out). This way, your body takes stored fat and calories and burns them instead of burning whatever you ate during the course of the day. And the protein: Protein will help you rebuild muscle, and the thing about muscle is that it burns many more calories then it's fat counterpart. Try doing this for at least 2 weeks and you'll definitely see some results.

Also, do you eat "meals" or do you just snack all day long? If you eat 6 meals a day at around 3 hour increments starting at 7:00 AM, you'll keep your metabolism boosted throughout the course of the day. This means more calories burnt :D

When I was on a serious diet 10 years ago, I had to fight against everyone around me... I had to be a nazy bas... and hate myself and punish myself to force me into a strict regime (the strict regime was 2000 Kcal per day, which is not too arsh... but it was for me)! I managed to pass the first two weeks of total madness. I think I was on some kind of brain chemical unbalance! I looked like a wild cat! After that it got better and after few months I got use to it and I lost 30 Kg in 1 year. Since then I was fine for 5 years and now I started again getting weight on . I fear I will be back to the bag of fat I was. I hate myself for that ... but apparently not enough!

What i want to say is that I feel alone in this battle and that is becasue me, you, all of us are alone. But a correct diet is for our ouwn benefit and we must find the strenght inside ourself.

My mom is unsporting over me and my weight loss goals, which suck. I am over weight and even my Dr. told me to lose weight, but my mom thinks I shouldn't. It's hard to talk to her about my diet and exercise because she gets all annoyed when I do talk about it. I'm 5'3" and weigh 150, I really don't want to weight this much and my goal is 110. I'm hoping to being there by spring of next year. I'm on the south beach diet because it is the best thing for my hypothyroid and my slow metabolism.

I need to make sure to cut out my carbs and eat a lot of protein instead. It is really helpful to people with hypothyroid. I just hope it works for me.

I have the same problem even when my boyfriend is trying to lose weight--he's just really bad about eating and orders food all the time. That changes a LOT when I make food. If I cook for him, we both eat healthier and cheaper! He's also started cooking for me :) So try cooking for everyone! They'll realize how good your food is, and you won't be tempted. Or if they don't eat your food, it's your own mini guilt trip for yourself--how awful would you feel if you cooked yourself dinner and instead of eating your delicious food, you ate their crap?! It's hard, but if you focus on cooking it helps. Good luck! And keep in mind: we've all been there and we're here for you!

i completely understand...i live w/ my boyfriend and his brother who both have sixpacks eventhough they eat chips soda doughnuts burgers pizza...you name it theyve eaten it twice that day...and then on my end i seem to gain weight if put too much salad dressing on..or 5 too many croutons....my shelves were basically rice cakes next to chips and granola next to capt crunch...so ive worked a routine with them to have "their" food in the shelves that aren't the ones i use...so all the junk is one spot away from my constant view..it doesn't change everything but it helps minimize my urge to snack.....
