So upset I don't live in America!
weird title.. lol, I love england really!
But I'm sure I'm not alone when I say we do NOT get as much good food as you do!
This is a pretty american site, and when i view all your posts and even on the food database its plain to see you have so much more options and just goood food!
I'm terrified about ever going over there because I think I'd gain at least 20 pounds in a week! Soo much I wanna try.. Wendys, all the different stuff you have at Mcdonalds, All the flavours of ben and jerrys you have over there, Corndogs?!?!, Waffles for breakfast?!?!?!
You guys are soo luckyyy
Hahaha
But ben and jerrys and waffles are goooood admit it.
Ben and Jerry's ON waffles is good! For breakfast.
i live in America, but was born in England....and trust me when i say i MISS the food there. potato waffles with heinz baked beans are amazing, hot potato shops, the local chippie!!!!
ok we may have more variety over here...but i swear the qualitys way better over there!
we have baked beans here but they taste nothing like heinz. dont have spaghetti hoops either =( and nope...no potato waffles.
I'm really jealous I don't live in America because of all the amazing low cal foods you get there that we cant get over here (well I can never find anyway) like Vitamuffins or Hostess (?) cup cakes that only have like 100 calories and 100 cal orero packs. Plus you have loads of Wholefood markets (I LOVE that place). I've been reading Skinny B*tch and it sucks that I can get practically non of the foods over here, as some of them sound so yummy
ETA: And Luna bars! They sound awesome but I cant find them anywhere here.
I've been in England for two years and I can't wait to move back home to SF! The food here is awful, being a vegetarian makes it worse! I miss Whole Foods & Trader Joes! I don't do Cadburys, squash, biscuits and all that junk.
Adel, if you want the best chocolate, try Montezuma's, if you haven't already! Made here in England, it's the most amazing chocolate!
oh and we dont have nando's, or the burger king bean burger, or kinder egg surprise....haha
actually i recently discovered a international warehouse here in Orlando that sells bristish items, they even have frozen british bread!!!
Omgg, you don't have jaffa cakes.. poor things :(
I bet you don't have creme eggs or anything like that either, couldnt live without all that stuff..
Found an american sweet shop in southampton the other day, with tootsie rolls(?!) and all that stuff, they are grossss btw
I'm still gunna get fat when I visit the US though!
:)
Though, I know there's a lot of strong advocates for organic, natural, healthy foods on here... it should be noted that I really could care less if I consume carcinogenic artificial chemicals that MAKE the "foods" low-cal, bring on the Olestra and cyclomate I say. Ruffles Light = <3
I got one better for you all, try being an American living in Australia, talk about lack of food choices and low cal options, its absolutely ridiculous.
And sorry to all the brits on here, but I don't see the allure of Jaffa cakes, had a friend of mine from england bring some on a trip with us once... not impressed! Oh, and yes, they DO get creme eggs in the states, but only around Easter... I LOVE those things, and of course we get them here in Oz, I have even been to the Cadbury factory in Tassie... talk about temptation galore with all the free chocolate they hand out
I will say this, having lost a significant amount of weight while living in the US, and now on my weight loss journey here in Oz, its easier here because I find the food so boring its not worth my time to over eat, although I really so miss the plethora of low cal choices.
Oh yeah, and Tim Tams are the most EVIL Aussie invention! Looked it up the other day and found out there is almost 100 calories in just ONE Tim Tam, won't be reaching for one of those again anytime soon.
I am with you bee_roach on missing the burritos... or any mexican type food for that matter, I don't think they know what mexican or tex-mex really is!
Ok enough of my rant, other than the food issues, I do love it here ![]()
I think most American food just sounds strange. Who eats turkey at ... like ... breakfast? I mean, I don't eat meat anyway ... but it still seems weird! Stuff like that. And someone gave me some Hershey's chocolate once and I thought it was ... rank. The same for Peanut Butter Cups. The only things I like the sound of are, yeah, Luna Bars ... and also there seems to be a wider variety of soy-based ice "cream".

You live near southampton? then all your chocolate problems are sorted - I LOVE the hotel chocolat on the ground floor in west quay! I could easily live in there - its expensive, but soooo worth it...
The only american food I really wish I could get over here is PB2 - I read a recipe on here that said if you mixed it with low cal chocolate pudding, it tasted like low fat nutella! Ohhh low fat nutella...
I love England as a place to travel, but not as a place to eat. Thank god at least places like London have decent restaurants thanks to the influx of foreigners. I have always heard horror stories about the English cuisine, so I was prepared when I went to stay with some family friend's parents who are in their 90's and live outside London. Dear god, I had to work to try to "get it down". Veggies were cooked till they were clear, beans were flavorless, meats came out of a can for gods sake. Whoever said Heinz beans are great is smoking something. I found most traditional english food overly heavy and void of any flavor or spices. And just throwing cream on fruit isnt a desert to me.
Americans have access to a huge selection of food, The problem here is that people eat mostly garbage rather then the actual good stuff. I mean our produce selection is ridiculus, and yet how many people dont get their minimum 5 servings. I do think our more traditional cuisine is pretty darn good ( my grandma makes the most incredible pan fried chicken and the most delectible peach cobbler).
In terms of the best food culture the french are still on top. You can get fantastic food, thats relatively inexpensive and fresh. they dont eat a lot of processed food frankly because they dont need to. I spent a summer in france and lived off of baguettes with fresh mozzarela, tomatos, basil, olive oil and touch of salt, as well as tons of fresh fruits and veggies, wonderful salads, fantastic pasteries (chocolate crossant anyone). They have it down.
Incidently, I stayed with a young couple while in france and I think the french tend to equate americans with the english (the french have a saying that the english kill their food twice: once, to kill it and second when they cook it). While I was there I made them banana bread, an apple pie, and lasagna. They were BLOWN away. They were like "we didnt know americans could cook" and its not like Im some great chef or anything. We are fortunate to have been influenced by so many other cuisines, like african, french, italian, german, chinese, south american, etc thanks to our foundation based on immigrants.
