*urgent* Has anyone ever stayed in Greece?

Quote  |  Reply

Hey hey,

As some of you know I'm going to Greece tomorrow for a week with my school. I know roughly what the Greek diet consists of (and have been 'practising' in Greek restaurants.. ED makes me a loser!!) but I have no idea what sort of thing will be served for breakfast in the hotels (which are generally cheap hotels). I rely on breakfast hugely to get me through the morning and for energy, and I was wondering if anyone could please please please tell me what sort of thing  they have in hotels in the mediterranean at the breakfast table? please tell me there's cereal!! I am taking raw food bars just in case but in the interests of appearing normal I'd rather 'normal' food as much as possible.

Thanks guys, you're all lifesaves,

xxxxx

I've never been to Greece, but do you know what kind of hotel you're staying at?  Normally, if it's an American hotel, they'll have the usual breakfast buffet.  This would include bacon, eggs, waffles, cereal (those mini boxes)—pretty much anything you can think of.  They'll likely have fresh fruit, milk, and juice as well.

If you're not staying at an American hotel, then I don't know.  Sorry!

I've never been to Greece either, but my father says that breakfast actually isn't a big meal over there. Usually it's just something small like fruit and yogurt with coffee. I would assume that the hotel would serve a varied breakfast, like Okgo said, if it serves meals. If not, bringing a bar sounds like a good idea, as does buying some cereal from a local market. I'm pretty sure the stores would carry some.

Sorry, that probably wasn't so helpful. :/

i think its impostant to challenge your fears eating the foods of the are, but you also need to be prepared.

if you eat cerreal toast, whatever it is for bfast, take it with you.

go to the supermarket there also.

take bars, trail mix, anything you think you might need, the more the better.

on vacation youre often more active than you think so eat more than you think!

In Santorini we were self-catering so mostly eating Greek yoghurt, toast and locally grown melon, there. ;[ Sorry, not very helpful. Most hotels will offer cereal and other foods considered basic staples at breakfast. Do not expect them to have porridge, though! I found this on Wikipedia, too, if it helps:

Greece. Various kinds of pastry constitute the traditional Greek breakfast. Tyropita, spanakopita, and bougatsa (particularly in Northern Greece) are eaten, usually accompanied with Greek coffee. Simpler breakfasts include honey, marmelade or nutella cream (as well a Greek variation thereof, Merenda) spread over slices of bread. Children typically drink chocolate or plain milk.

So, toast, savoury pastries and coffee. Sounds good to me, haha. :B

you can get anything you could possibly want in greece.  don't worry.

Thanks everyone!! Hopefully they'll have cereal or toast or something that I can relax about - the temptation with yoghurt or fruit is to not have enough of it to quantify the breakfasts I have at home. I'm gonna take my bars and cross my fingers hehe!

I'm gonna miss posting on here for a week - it's such a support for me! xxxxx

I am orginally from Greece, and it has become so amercanized that you will be able to find almost everything you find at home.

Don't worry, greece is beautiful and the food is wonderful!

Have lots of fun!

Lived in Greece for 11 years. Don't worry, they eat 'normal' food there. :)  You'll be able to find anything you need.

My family is Greek and I was last there just this summer.  Breakfast is not a big thing in Greece. Usually you would have coffee, juice/water and either some kind of pastry or what they call toast which is a grilled cheese sandwich.  That being said you should be able to find places serving "English" breakfasts.....a regular fry up.  Enjoy.

I was in Greece about 3 months ago and the hotel we stayed at had eveything you could think of for a continental breakfast. They did have cereal (but they only had warm milk for it :( yuck). But besides that they had breads, fruits, meats, cookies, yogurt, eggs.. you get my point. I'm sure not all hotels are the same, but most of the one's we stayed at had wide varieties of foods. :)

Why don't you use it as an excuse to eat what you want and kick your ED in the rear for a week??? =)

I was in Italy recently, know it's not the same thing, but we stayed at a cheaper hotel and they had a breakfast set out with meats, buns, yogurt and milk for cereals, different teas, and jams.

You can also find some freaking ridiculous pastries. Hahaha!

I gained 4 pounds while in Greece! Eat all the bread, nutella, fruit drinks, yogurt, etc you can find! Every place I was at had tons of pastries and things that were homemade and delicious. Where in Greece are you going? Seriously though, there is bread and cheese everywhere so take advantage. And olive oil. And its all so good for you!

Oh yes, and there is cereal. Generally museli and corn flakes. Good luck!

Yogurt yogurt yogurt!!!!!!!!  Delicious!!!  It's whole milk yogurt and oh so creamy.  Ask for honey or jam to give it a bit of sweetness, or eat it plain.  Man, it's sooooo good.  If you're staying outside of Athens and you don't like your coffee supersweet, find out how to say "NO SUGAR" in greek because otherwise coffee is generally similar to syrup.

Hello! I actually spent the first two weeks of my summer in Greece- it was *just* before all the tourists had arrived and it was great. I'm actually surprised you're going in October, definently the off season that is.

So I stayed in hostels and my guess is, because you're going with a school, you'll be staying in slightly nicer accomodations. My hostels were pretty good actually.

So breakfast at a hotel with lots of tourists is almost always a verrryyy light meal. Usually hearty toast and butter with some juice. If you're at a more accomodating hostel (like mine in Crete :D) there might be a short order cook who's willing to cook you some eggs.

As for the rest of your day, it's expected you'll snack variously until dinner. Snacks are almost always yogurt and fruit, or some pita snack. Usually healthy. Depending on where you are dinner could be anything. In athens it was the traditional heavy mousakka as well as a wide variety of meat and potato esque dishes (the greek restaurants usually cook things in the morning and let them simmer all day, taking you up to the counter so they can explain what's the day's food). On the islands, expect way more seafood, usually extremely fresh. Was a great food experience :D
