How much sodium does a person need in a day?

The body requires only 500 milligrams of sodium each day.

The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,400 milligrams of sodium per day.

Most of us take in more than 4,000 milligrams every day.

I have the hardest time with this. When I'm paying attention I can keep it around 2,000 -- maybe a little over. I shudder to think what my intake is when I'm not paying attention.

Drinking plenty of water seems to help flush out the extra sodium and helps me feel less bloated.
