I dreaded weighing myself this morning. I kept worrying that if I didn't lose any weight after really putting my body through a lot of pain and fighting my urges to eat sweets then it would've all been for nothing and that I'd give up again. Really, how could I not have lost anything given all that work I put in. So I'm so happy I managed to lose 2.2 pounds this week. My bf also lost 2 pounds. So 16 or so more to go.
I did get a little bummed out last night when I came across an academic critical critique of the p90x program and what it actually delivers vs what its marketing says it will deliver. It kind of made my jaw drop at how gullible I've been at trusting Tony. The source seemed pretty reliable in terms of references and credentials. My biggest complaint about this program is that I just don't have all the time for it. I've already known for a while that HIIT cardio training can burn just as many calories in a shorter amount of time than steady cardio for a longer work out. But I guess I thought p90x was something completely different since it doesn't market itself as cardio. What the article said was somewhat promising in the things I want to achieve, which is weight loss not bulking up. p90x is basically an endurance program heavy on cardio masked as a strength and muscle building program. Which means it's mainly good for weight loss. The article also explored better methods of burning fat that won't take 7+ hours of your week. And while the program itself claims that you can lose 600 calories a work out, that's not exactly true. I didn't have to read that part to figure that out. My heart rate really never got high enough this week and I was concerned about that so I also did HIIT cardio during my lunch breaks and steady cardio too. I can easily burn 500+ running at a steady pace for an hour. I can burn about 300 doing HIIT in 30 minutes. So shouldn't I do that instead of doing 80 minutes of yoga to burn a measly 200 calories? Absolutely. So this week I will try out plain ol' exercise and see how it compares to my weight loss this past week. After all, I lost 40 pounds 5 years ago doing regular old running. And I didn't even have the running endurance that I do now. It really comes down to diet so I need to better focus on that this week to make the excersing count for something. Am I dropping p90x? No. There are indeed some fun work outs that I do enjoy and my bf really likes kenpo. So we'll include those in our routine but take our main excersie routine back to basics. And if I do worse? Then I'll go back to the p90x program since it is, afterall, a fat burning system.
