Entry So much to do.....
May 01 2009 08:05

Final week is here and Ive had to study like crazy. Ive done well on snacking though. I always make sure I have an orange or apple near by. I have so much to do this summer to prepare for NS that i dont even know where to start. Ill need to get a head start on studying for classes (med surg and psych first semester which I heard is a killer)..Im really not looking forward to the 6 hour CPR class i will have to take and pay 60 bucks for either. Not to mention I have to finally crack down and get my drivers license that I have been avoiding getting for a long time. I would be completely satisfied with just getting a ride to clinicals forever. It would be even better if I lived within walking distance of a hospital.:)

I remember the stress of Nursing School.  It will be ok in the end, believe it or not.  I could not think that way when I was going through it, but it did always turn out all right.

I hated Pharm.  Now working as a nurse it seems it is all I do, pay attention to the actions and classifications of drugs. that is really what you need to know. Dosages and calculations are figured out for us by the pharmacist, yes you need to know what the usual dosages for drugs are, but when the doctor orders IV Vanco for 10 days and then hangs up, I call the pharm and get it dosed, and IV rate is always set by a pharmacist, but when you are going through that class they make it out like you are the one that has to figure all this out and it is hard, when I am working I carry a pocket drug guide and memorized the pharm.'s phone number.

Med surge I loved.  It is the heart and soul of nursing so put a good effort into it.  Clinical is nerve racking, because you are so afraid to mess up and hurt someone.  When you start working that feeling goes away as you become more confident, so relax.

I just realized that you wrote Psych not pharm.  oh well, I'm sure you will take a Pharm class too.

I'm not a Psych nurse, never really enjoyed that clinical, some of the material is interesting, and working with traumatic brain injury and acute care I deal with a lot of mental disorders and a lot of the drugs that are used in that field, so I guess you can't get away from it what ever field of practice you choose. but I don't think I could just be a Psych nurse.  Some of the stories can really be depressing, and tx mostly doesn't involve the nurse much, except to give out medications.  Because mental health is not taken as being important, most insurances don't cover it, or cover it poorly, so most of tx is out patient.  I see these pt.s more in the med surge setting than in a mental health hospital.  So it is important to know what the s/sx of mental health diseases, traumatic experiences, depression, and etc... because no matter where you work you will see Psych issues.

Good luck getting your license, and good luck with finals, like I said, I'm sure it will all be ok.
