Entry VERY. BAD. NEWS.
Nov 12 2009 09:51

Just got a call from my doctor- I have STRESS FRACTURES in both of my legs.  I am not "allowed" to run for 3-4 more weeks (I've already not run for over a week).  I am not allowed to run my marathon.  I would be crying right now, but I am at work so I have to be a big girl.  I wish I'd have gone to the doctor sooner, like in June/July when it prob was just shin splints.  I seriously want to cry.

i'm so sorry to hear... that really sucks.  How much more damage would it cause if you ran the marathon?

Skipping the marathon to heal isn't the end of the world you know.  Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate and come back in the spring ready for a PR.

awww I'm so sorry Danielle!  That really sucks you have been training really hard :(

Maybe look at it as an opportunity to get more into a lower impact sport like swimming or yoga or something?

Marathons are terrible on your body anyways.  You have already done one, you know you CAN do it.  Focus all that time and energy to another positive aspect of your life  :)

if I would have been training for the full I would have bought your entry off you.  My 1/2 is in 3 1/2 weeks.  I got into a drunken wrestling match during our penn state tailgating party and bruised my peck muscle.  I haven't been able to run all week.  I ran a mile yesterday, it hurt.

OMG I'm so sorry. I would be crying if I were you. Get well and look forward to the next marathon, buddy.

Take care of yourself! There are more marathons to come, but you only get one body.

I know how it feels though, I have not run for months cause of my hip. But I am still gettng slimmer and stronger, so staying positive.

aww i'm sorry to hear about this! your training was super intense, so i know it must be hard to know you're not doing the marathon...but i agree with morgan, you know you would have done amazing otherwise!

it sucks to be disappointed like that but there's plenty of time in the future once you're nice and healed. hang in there.

Sucky stupid stress fractures!!! I agree with Taryn - there will be more marathons to come, but you gotta take care of that body...

Well, I'm absorbing the facts now, and I've done a little research, and I think I'm still going to run the race....don't kill me!!!  I will drop out if my pain becomes severe during the race, but at this point it would kill me to not run, and I won't run from now until then, or after.  I already received my number, etc, and I'm not in any pain right now, they are not very severe.  Thank you all for being so sweet to me!!

RE: marathons being bad for your body- I don't really agree with that fully, I think over-training is bad for your body, but following a sane program I think marathoning can be great!

Ahh!! If you were my friend and in reach of me I would shake you! lolYell

You want to try to do a marathon with fractures??? Do you realize that if you hurt yourself worse, it could potentially be your last marathon? I want to run, but I don't, cause I am thinking long term, and my hip would hate me for it. So many people get hurt running them, and you are going to run one already hurt? (a fracture is not like a shin splint or a minor muscle tear...)

There will be another one in 6 months or a year....

This is coming from someone who used to be nicknamed Ms fitness at college, taught classes, was extremely active, and had a nice six pack....I had to slow down.

Necessary, but not easy. There is a thin line between being ballsy and insane with running.

Please don't Frown

Danielle - I am so sorry honey! I know you must be devestated. But honestly...I echo what cello is saying. You don't want this to be your LAST marathon, do you? How about you mull it over for a bit before you make your final decision. Don't push it lady.

HANG IN THERE!

oh no, Im so sorry. When is the race? I dont think it would be too bad if it were in like 3 weeks but I wouldnt push if its in the next week or so. Take care of yourself first there will be other races.

Oh! I'm so sorry! I know how hard you've worked for this! But hey- the marathon/running experience isn't only about the race. Most of it is all the miles we put in training and preparing- race day is only one run of the hundreds of runs we do. You've got a lot out of it already and have achieved success!

Please take it easy, and don't run the marathon. If you do, it could be your last one ever. My co-worker made a similar decision last year, and she injured herself very severely and now was told she can never run again. Besides if you do run it, you probably won't be at your best and that will cause you more angst.

Everything happens for a reason, perhaps this was a sign to take it easy and focus on other kinds of fitness.

i say run it.  I would.  us runners are crazy.  ask mfonzie about the band-aid incident.  you do what you have to do.  hit the no-impact to keep your fitness level and just a steady pace.

maybe buy a new running outfit? jk

You do what you have to do......

And sometimes that = rest. Care more about your legs than a race. Give them a little break. All Drs aren't stupid. Sometimes they actually just want you to not hurt yourself worse.

I know it is hard, but sometimes...you have to slow things down. Before you get back to where you wanna be.

I say run it too. However, listen to your body. If it hurts like hell in the middle of the race there's no shame in stopping. You may set your healing time back a little but you have a year until next years race. Good luck hun
