Hungry is quotes because I know that I'm not actually hungry...I just have the urge to eat. Its been like this for about 4 days now. Because of this, the last few days I've eaten a little bit more than my 1200-1300 calories. I've been more in the range of 1350-1450. I'm not entirely worried because I'm still eating healthy food and the number on the scale has gone down a bit, but I DON'T want this to become a habit because I know that I am not doing enough exercise to lose weight at those calories. Today I've been trying to eat small 'meals' throughout the day to curb the hunger but unfortunately, as soon as I'm done eating, I start thinking/craving the next meal. I don't know where all this came from. I'm getting plenty of fiber, protein & vitimins...my diet seems balanced. I'm drinking tons of water. Just still hungry...I think a lot of it is boredom. I'm used to snacking on stuff while I'm working and I can't really do that anymore. I do have a bowl of mixed nuts on the coffee table, I will crack a couple of those open everyonce in a while. It doesn't satisfy my hunger but it keeps me occupied instead of shoving Doritos in my mouth. Ugh, Doritos...even the word makes my mouth water.
Lord, be with me in my moments of weakness. Which is like... always lol.
I've started looking for healthy recipes for Thanksgiving. My first Thanksgiving that I cooked was last year for Josh and his brother who was in town. I made Cornish Hens because I hate turkey and I think that the hens are the cutest little mini-turkeys on each person's plate. I made pumpkin soup in a pumpkin shell (not the best recipe...will not be making that again), Sweet Potato Souffle, braided "Butter-horns" (a old family bread recipe-delicious!) wild-rice/cranberry/walnut stuffing, and this amazingly decadent ButterRum cake from a Martha Stewart recipe. It was a beautiful and delicious meal ...probably incredibly fattening, the cake alone had like 3 sticks of butter in it.
Anyways, this year will be different. I don't intend to completely cut-back because hey, its Thanksgiving. But I do want to make healthier choices because I know how easy it is to break these good habits. I'll still go with Cornish Hens because its sort of my trademark dish but I want to find equally creative/delicious/healthy dishes for the rest of menu. This year, we've invited our friend's roommate over for Thanksgiving because she just moved here, doesn't know a whole lot of people, has no where else to go. It will be interesting because we don't have a dining room table anymore (our dining room is now my art studio) but we will figure it out..
I took the Martha Stewart quiz "What Thanksgiving Side Dish are you?" today and got mashed potatos and gravy lol. I can see that...
If you're looking for healthy holiday side dishes I would recommend checking out this month's Cooking Light - either buy a copy in store, or I believe they have all the recipes online. I was tempted to start cooking holiday food a few weeks ago when my copy came in the mail! Lots of veggies and some good dessert ideas too, plus healthier versions of classics. I'm making the Pumpkin Ice Cream torte for our work potluck Thanksgiving, so I made a mini version as practice this weekend and it's pretty delicious! |
I find its helpful to drink hot beverages to curb hunger, they make you feel fuller than cold water (at least I think). The other day I was drinking mug after mug of herbal tea at work, when dinner time finally came around I was barely hungry for it. |
Just saw your journal entry come up on my "recent activity" screen. In addition to the Cooking Light suggestion, I just saw this article from Active.com on healthier makeovers of traditional Thanksgiving recipes. The recipes sound quite good, and provide you with the "savings" in terms of calories, fat, etc. |
