The challenge is to give back to our children a world of beauty and wonder.
-Wangari Maathai, Environmentalist (1940- )
We have a lot of work to do to keep this true. I have a lot of work to do. It is hard to find a balance between our consumerism and commercialism with that of preserving the environment.
There are so many pockets of beauty and wonder left in the world but we lose so many each year to development and disaster.
The fall leaves color changing this year was great to see.
Beautiful colors.
The quote reminds me of one of these- there are 2 ways to interpret it. We may not be able to make a significant impact in stopping environmental damage and reversing it, so to me the challenge is how to help kids to see the world we have and spot the beauty in it, as it is. Once kids start to lose their naiveté and innocence, and become cynical and jaded, that is where the challenge begins. |
Believe me, I see this both ways. Just when we went van hunting and saw the beautiful trees and the colors. I can really appreciate that. I also cringe though when I see the abuse we do (clear cutting of the same forests without a plan to take care of the land.) Planted eleven plants yesterday and split some sawed wood. My own paradox of econess. |
