In a recent Ask Mary column, Mary Hartley writes:
"According to the medical model accepted by mainstream America, health is the absence of a diagnosable disease..."
It occurred to me that this is probably a significant component in the current American health crisis.
There's an old saw that goes something like, "If you don't know where you're going, you'll certainly never get there."
Likewise, absence of disease isn't quite the same as presence of health.
In other words, we're defining everything but the target, which isn't the same as defining the target. Maybe if we got better at defining the target, we'd also improve our accuracy in hitting it.
Good points.. Also, thanks for commenting on my first journal! You gave some really good advice. You know, I can picture myself riding a bike and getting really into it. It would be cool to have on campus, but it's not very bike-friendly here...I know a few kids who have been hit by cars and as a walker I come close to getting hit by the bikers every once in awhile! We really need better trails. I'm definitely going to look into it and talk to my biker friends though. (Funny to say "biker friends" because my parents and brother drive motorcycles, so that's my connotation).

Oh, yeah, bike-unfriendly places can be rough -- Louisville isn't too bad (as medium-sized mid-western cities go), but when I lived in Lexington, everyone I knew who biked on a regular basis had been hit at least once (including me). It's especially hard when you're not used to riding with traffic. I'm pretty used to it, and there are still parts of Louisville I avoid during high-traffic periods because the drivers can be pretty aggressive. I also know what you mean about bikers almost running over pedestrians -- I usually try to avoid biking on the sidewalk, but I do in a couple of spots, and when I'm on the sidewalk, I bear in mind that I'm on walker turf, and the right of way is rightfully theirs. It always irritates the bejeezus out of me when I'm walking and someone on a bike comes tearing down the sidewalk and simply expects everyone to jump out if his or her way. LOL, yeah, I always think 'motorcycles' when I hear 'bikers' too, but I hate to call myself a 'cyclist,' because it sounds so pretentious and makes me picture skinny guys in tights :D |
Oh, also, meant to say, "You're welcome, glad to be of service! :D" but I forgot. |
Is my sodium intake too low?
You have nothing to worry about because sodium deficiency is extremely rare. In fact, there is not even an recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA... Read more
