Back to Square One

Got on the scale this a.m. with fear and trepidation, and found that those fears were well grounded! I'm back to where I started in January, and that's not pretty. I've been struggling all year and had lost only three or four pounds after having shed almost thirty last year. Now a vacation week with lots of food and no exercise have done me in...my goal is thirteen pounds away...AGAIN! Today marks a new beginning.

Wow...That's Good!

Just back from a 5-day conference, was totally scared to get on a scale...but I'm a big .2 lighter than when I started. Happy Day! This is incredible, given the fact that my friend Barb and I cooked up a storm, then invited all 2500+ Conference members (not really...only a dozen folks, truth be told) to join us for meals. We cook healthy, but we cook lots...and then we help eat it...at least I do...far more than I should.

This was West Ohio Conference of United Methodists...maybe God was looking out for me and my scale???

SeeSaw

Omigosh...I can see that my "progress" in the weight department is going to be crazy this summer. The not-too-accurate scale at home is two pounds lighter than the one at the cottage. It's going to be more than a little demoralizing to watch the two-pound hops every time we change location, and we do that a lot! I hope it all shakes out on the positive side.

The Greening

Cutting through the park en route home from my daily trek, I was struck by the bright green of Spring. It was late afternoon and the sun was low...hitting the freshly mowed grass and the just-emerging tree leaves at just the right angle. Beautiful, beautiful! We talk so much about green these days...we need to take note of this green...the one that makes Spring a thing to lighten our load and keep us happy.

Good Friday

Last night (Good Friday) I had a chance to test my wings and see if I still "had it" in the drama department. I wasn't disappointed, and neither was the congregation, as they absorbed a readers' theatre production of the drama "Golgotha". I directed ten parishioners in this presentation. In my mind's eye, I still see them -- nine perched on tall stools, scattered on the chancel and at the front of the sanctuary, the narrator standing at the lectern -- very dim light in the chancel, no light over the pews. The cast and the choir all in black; ten candles of various sizes and shapes arranged on the altar. As they read, each of the players portrayed a key figure in the Crucifixion. There was no interaction -- just Judas, Peter, a Samaritan woman, Mary, Mary Magdalene, and four others, telling it like it was for them. As each finished, they approached the altar and snuffed out a candle. After the narrator extinguished the last taper and the darkened church was very still, a chime tolled 33 times. After the last note faded, the sanctuary lights came up just a little to indicate the end of the service. The congregation left in silence. Wow! This was so powerful...and I was so pleased with all the players...they each brought their character to life for just those few moments. Allelujia!

I wish all my CC friends a blessed Easter...let the Son shine on your soul!

Great Day!

Looking back at my journal and at some of the challenge posts I've made, I'm startled to see that most of what I've written is negative! I really have my good moments, but I seem to write only about disappointments. I've deleted most of my journal, and I'm determined to do better.

Yesterday was a tea party (see my profile) for a comparatively young (compared to me, most everyone's young) woman whose lifelong companion died suddenly last fall. Understandably, she's still grieving, but we were able to provide an hour or so of hilarity...and that's what our mission is all about. As usual, we four had a wonderful time, and so did our "honoree" (unless she's a first-class actress and fooled us all). At the end of the party, all our hearts were full of love and laughter.

I think I really need to pay more attention to metabolism and nutrition. I've been working on the assumption that a calorie is a calorie...just so they don't add up above my target count. But that's not working very well -- I'm stuck, vacillating up and down by a couple of pounds, about 12 lb. from my goal weight. Basically, that's where I've been for the past six months or so, and I need to be more aggressive in my approach to this whole thing. I continue to walk 2 miles a day, and do 15 minutes of strength training three times a week..and that's about all I can manage in my dotage. I'll need to do something about my food choices!

So -- good luck to me and to anyone else who finds themselves in the same boat. If you can extend an oar to help me, I'm more than willing to row like Hell!

Nuts!

I was off to a good start for the first few days of the year, but the past two days have been nightmares in the food department! If it's around, I eat it. And when I'm disgusted with myself and swear that I'm not going to do that anymore...I do it anway. Guess the only way I'm going to get anywhere is to have absolutely nothing in the house that will tempt me, cuz my willpower seems to be O.

New Beginnings

I've arrived at the new year at just about exactly my weight at the beginning of LAST year! And that's not too bad, but it's not what I planned. Sooooo...it's back to square one, and I'll not let anything get in my way. I'm going to do it! I know I can...and what's 13 pounds in the grand scheme of things?
