Entry WARNING: Politics Ahead! Procede With Caution!
Feb 03 2008 11:59

So, in high school I was very much a Republican. Hard-core republican. Now I'm a libertarian. I took this really long quiz about what I believe in and all that jazz and it told me that I'm a Libertarian. I just think it's kind of funny that I can go from so very grounded in one thing to very grounded in another and not really realize it.

I guess if I was to reconsider all my views, college would be the place to do it. As opposed to ignorant pigheadedness in my own beliefs being enforced on everyone else, I know that I could never make blanket statements as to what is right for everyone. My boyfriend helped me with this a lot. (No, he didn't drag me off my podium or anything, or make me weaker.) He likes playing Devil's Advocate. He always asked me questions about what I believed in, and when I couldn't answer him in anything but, "I don't know... just because," I knew I had to rethink things through.

I think I'm pretty happy with where I am now though. I've thought everything I could out and straightened everything out (political beliefs- wise) and I feel a lot better knowing where I stand on certain issues. I feel good. Even though I know my parents wouldn't bee too terribly happy about my Voter's Registration Card right now. (My dad's REALLY conservative, and my mom's pretty conservative... though she's more libertarian that she'd like to admit!)

But this is my life. One of the major lessons I've been struggling to learn these past 2 years is that this is my life, not my parents. While they're there to guide me, they really can't tell me what to do all the time. I need to make my own choices.

Hmm... interesting metaphor... (didja catch it? tehe!)

Hey. I'm also a college student trying to figure out where I stand politically. My father is a republican and my mother and older brother are democrats (you can imagine how peaceful our dinner times usually are!) And I'm just sort of somewhere in between. Well, not in between, really. I've very liberal on some issues, and yet very conservative on others.

Practically my whole school is democrat, which annoys me, because I know a lot of them are just "going with the flow". They don't know why they believe what they believe.. they just like rallying and complaining about Bush. So this makes me hesitate to label myself with the same labels they use, if that makes sense.

Yet I don't want to be a hated right-winger, and honestly I'm not, mostly.

WHAT is this site that you went on to take a quiz? I would so like to check it out XD

Hey there,

thanks for the nice compliment on my picture. I was kind of bashful to put those up, but what the heck.

It's awesome that you're reevaluating all your political beliefs. I think it's important not to get into a rut where you just stop questioning things. I consider myself a pretty liberal democrat, but I still make sure I listen to all of the republican candidates to make sure I am really making the right decisions for myself.

It's nice that your bf challenges you like that, too. It's cool that you can have good conversations about important issues while still being respectful to each other's ideas and stuff.

I don't remember where the quiz was, I just remember it was a really good quiz on a poorly designed website. Hahaha!

Yeah, I'm pretty lucky to have him in my life... most of the time. Hahaha! ;) We are always very civil about things like that though. And we know that the Top 3 (religion, politics, and money) are usually sensitive topics so we usually broach it carefully. If the other backs off, we drop it. We've got a pretty good communication thing going on. It's almost like that's what you're supposed to do in a good relationship! Hahaha!
