Entry MONDAY MENU -- FIRST DAY OF FALL!
Sep 22 2008 09:26

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF FALL!

I must admit that the scale is cooperating nicely, and I've lost 4 of the 12 or so pounds that snuck back on .... not bad for 3 days, huh? Of course it was water weight ... I rather suspected that some of it was, and I'm optimistic another pound or two will wander off later this week as my TOM ends.  You can tell that fall weather is coming .... only mid-90s instead of 100s, lol! I am really hoping for nice weather on Saturday (not too hot) since I'm volunteering at a fundraiser called WIGGLE WAGGLE WALK for the Valley Animal Center. (I'm the photographer, how cool is THAT!?)  I'm supposed to get together with a friend today around 11:40, wonder if I can avoid lunch and get her to go shopping instead? Hmmm..... fingers crossed.

Both these photos are by photographer Robert Knight ... I would love to have both of them hanging in my home, but he's waaaaay out of my price range!!!

Entry SUNDAY MENU ... SIRLOIN & SPINACH
Sep 21 2008 08:44

Sunday morning here and it's a very pretty day so far. My wonderful DH called me this morning to say hello, which was nice. Of course I was ALREADY up, being poked and licked and climbed by inquisitive kitiies, especially Emily, Fuzzball and Scampi. And McIntosh came for a drive-by petting, too.  They congregate in our bedroom in the morning to watch the flocks of doves in our bird feeders, plus the occasional squwawky jay, chittering squirrel, and fluttery finches n' sparrows.

I didn't take any bed-time insulin last night, and my blood sugar this morning was just fine ... 127. YAY!  And the scale was 2.8 pounds less ... gotta love UNretaining water, huh? Always nice to see it move in the correct direction, ya know? Anyway, I'm off to a political rally about 10:30am .... so I am posting my menu and then heading to get dressed!

Entry BACK IN THE SADDLE - SATURDAY MENU
Sep 20 2008 12:53

Well, my wonderful DH is off "on vacation," leaving me with a house-full of kitties, veggies and lean protein, lol! I've got 6.5 weeks to lose about 12 pounds to get me back to where I'd love to be (275) by the time that my wonderful DH steps off the plane in early November.  It should be "theoretically" possible except for the fact that (1) my darn thyroid seems to have totally gone kaput and I can't increase my thyroid meds until November; and (2) my blood sugars have been on the high side (morning sugars anywhere from 130s to 160s and they really need to be 130 or lower) so I've been taking some overnight long-acting insulin.... which makes me hungrier ...aaarrrrrgghh!  ANYWAY ... POSITIVE THOUGHTS! POSITIVE THOUGHTS! I CAN DO THIS! I CAN DO THIS! I CAN DO THIS!

BREAKFAST

  • Western Bagel Perfect 10 bagel (low carb/high protein)
  • Trader Joe's Eggplant Hummus
  • Trader Joe's Spicy Ranchero Egg White Salad

LUNCH

  • Blueberry Fiber Cake
  • Trader Joe's Spicy Ranchero Egg White Salad
  • 6 ounces fresh spinach
  • one cucumber
  • one cup of grape tomatoes

DINNER

  • Trader Joe's organic lean sirloin
  • Blueberry Fiber Cake
  • Three cups of lettuce
  • One cup of grape tomatoes
  • one large red sweet pepper

SNACKS

  • six hard boiled egg whites
  • two cups of sliced radishes
  • five slices of fat free turkey bologna
  • small apple

NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE DAY

  • Calories: 1265
  • Fiber:  57 grams
  • Net Carbs: 87 (lower than usual due to high blood sugars)
  • Fruit/Veggie Servings: 15

Entry CAT HOUSE ON THE KINGS
Sep 19 2008 21:27

I spent three delightful hours this afternoon at the CAT HOUSE ON THE KINGS (click for  You Tube video) .... a no-kill, no-cage cat sanctuary located on the Kings River about an hour from Fresno. They have acres and acres of land, all enclosed with cat-fencing, and hundreds of adoptable kitties roam free throughout the grounds and the 5 bedroom house.  (They also have a few rescue dogs, too!)  I've signed up to volunteer for them (cat cuddler and office/fundraising help) ... so we went out this afternoon so I could see it in person.  Check out the link ... (and pass it on) ... it's a pretty amazing place! I think I will try to make it out there about once a week while my wonderful DH is off "camping in the sandbox!"

In other cat news, Marsha continues to eat and to heal (woo hoo!) This morning we dropped off a basket-full of white kitty cookies at the vet's office as a "Thank You from Marsha" (our white kitty cat) -- for all their help and care for our furry little girl. My wonderful DH was willing to pose for me with the cookies!

Entry THIS N' THAT . . .
Sep 18 2008 20:59

Heh heh heh heh heh .... I saw this online, and thought it was pretty cool. Of course, I'm not really going to invest hundreds of dollars on this, but I did think it was one of those silly things that SOME people might purchase to amuse themselves, their guests, and their cats!

Where did I file those kittens? Did I file them under C for cat? K for kitten? Or was it under A for adorable? Isn't this the cutest photo? Found it on Cute Overload and it just makes me smile.... what great little furry faces, huh? Good news about Marsha -- she's now eating dry kibble (yay!) AND she sat on me and purred for about 30 minutes this afternoon! WOOO HOOO!

Tomorrow night (Friday) we're driving out to the country to a friend's house for a barbecue and visit. It should be nice ... and I suppose it's as good a way as any for my wonderful DH to spend his last evening at home for a while, huh? He's almost all packed, and has been spending time getting some last-minute things taken care of around the house.   I'm pretty bummed that my diabetes is "acting up" right now .... I wonder if I am battling a virus or if stress is causing me to have high sugars? Anyway, I've been taking insulin for the past 14 days and would really like to get back off it, ya know?

Entry MAMMOGRAM COMPLETED!
Sep 17 2008 14:54

Photobucket I love my cheesehead!

My wonderful DH was such a sweetheart today, he not only drove me to get my first--ever mammogram, but he also brought along my deodorant so that I could apply some afterwards. Then he took me out to lunch to ..... HOOTERS (which we thought was hysterically funny under the circumstances!)  OK, ladies .... when was your last mammogram and do you need to schedule one?

Marsha cat continues to improve ... but she's getting rather grouchy/feisty -- hissing at other kitties through the cat-door window, and even at us when we put her e-collar back on.  I am glad that she's feeling well enough to be a bit "pissy" .... we think this shows definite improvement. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Entry COUNTING DOWN TO AUTUMN . . .
Sep 16 2008 22:35

Photobucket

It was in the upper 90s here today, but I can "feel" Autumn coming, can't you? Of course, it's still in the 80s and it's 11pm at night, but some evenings/mornings have been getting cooler, which is nice.  At least the trees think it's fall ... we have yellow, brown and reddish leaves strewn all over our green lawn and sidewalks! Anyway, fall arrives this year just as my wonderful DH leaves for Iraq, and I'm trying to focus on ANYTHING right now other than his leaving -- since that just makes me cry. What can I say? You'd think I'd be better at this by now, but I'm not. All I can think of is the reality that I only get four more nights with him, snuggling, before he leaves for months. Gosh I'm tired of deployments, tired of war, tired of having him gone for so long.  Hmmm.... maybe I will focus on tomorrow's (Wednesday's) mammogram. OUCH.

Don't mind me. I'm hot. I'm PMSing. I'm grouchy. My husband's leaving. And tomorrow I get my boobies squooshed.

(sigh)

Entry KITTY UPDATE: MARSHA IS DOING FINE
Sep 15 2008 15:17

Miss Marsha Mellow went back to the vet today for a followup appointment and to get her pain patch removed. She weighs exactly the same as she did pre-surgery last Thursday, which is good. Her temperature was normal, yay! And he said that her sutures/wounds looked good -- no sign of infection, and both ears are healing nicely.
He gave us a prescription for A/D prescription wet cat food to help get her to eat (so we bought a case of it ... yikes, sticker shock)... and we also bought her more tuna, too (she likes the tuna juice!) We still have organic all-beef baby food for her, too ... thanks to good advice we got last night from some online friends experienced with cats who won't eat!

When we got home from the vet, she was pretty grouchy ... but I laid down on the futon for a while and -- for the first time EVER -- she jumped up and laid down on my tummy and took a nap! I was pretty jazzed. (Hot, but happy ... furry cats and summertime are an interesting mix!) Anyway, her next appt is on the 25th-- so only 10 more days (hopefully) or her wearing her E-collar. (We did trim it down a bit for her!)

Entry TICKLED PINK, PINK, PINK!!!
Sep 13 2008 22:48

 Photobucket

PRETTY IN PINK!

I was tickled pink to go to the Tulare County Fair with my wonderful DH. The hour-long drive south was nice -- lots of corn fields and grape vineyards. We arrived around noon (just as the doors opened for the day) and got a great parking space, YAY! We had a great time in the carnival section, and we won small stuffed animals on the ring toss, dart throw, and Whack-a-Mole! (We later gave them away to a family with three little boys!) It was fun to see the cows, sheep, pigs, horses and ducks ... to walk around and see the photo exhibits, the jams/jellies, and some breathtakingly gorgeous quilts. For lunch we had BBQ ribs (no sauce for me) ... which was great. (We sat on a hay bale in the shade and had a picnic!) I had a great chat with a lovely lady who won a blue ribbon for her turtle quilt, too.  There was a booth there that sold made-to-order magnetic signs for your car ... and (since I was wearing pink today) ... I was inspired and had a pair of pink signs made for my nifty yellow Mustang! (giggle!)  After we got home, my wonderful DH took me out for Spanish Tapas at a great restaurant called Flamenco -- and we also enjoyed the Flamenco show. Marsha the Cat is doing well, but she isn't eating much. We finally were able to coax her into eating about 1/2 can of wet food. We did trim down her Elizabethan Collar for her a little bit, too.
