Entry There is a pea under my mattresses
Nov 12 2009 09:14

Seriously.  I know I'm a sleep princess - I have to have everything just right.  There is always a pea, or two, or five, under my mattress.  To those of you who worked AND had little children, you have my deepest respect.  I want a soundproof slumber chamber, in a high tower, guarded by a dragon, all to myself.

My snowball hit a rock yesterday and exploded.  I did well until about an hour after lunch, when I just couldn't stop eating.  I started out having a healthy snack of fruit and cottage cheese, then had a handful of pretzels, then a couple of snack size chocolate bars, then a couple of fruit roll-ups, then asked hubby to take us to McDonalds, where again I started out decently with a salad and a cheeseburger with only one bun - but then I ate the kid's left over chicken nuggets, and some of hubby's fries and soda (I need to start asking him to get me a water), and then half an ice cream cone.

And it was mostly because I was just so tired.

I did nothing after going to Wal-Mart.  Well, not entirely true.  For about 15 minutes, I got all the cobwebs from places in the kitchen and living room.  But nothing besides that.  Besides CHAT, of course.

Today, I have already accomplished more, though there were peas under my mattress last night too.  I've got a load of dishes and a load of laundry going.  I want to dust off the living room fan (I don't think it has ever been done before), then vaccum the living room, hall, and girls' room, and steam clean.

And I've got that 40 calorie kernel to my snowball this morning too.

As far as the Princess Tea Party goes:  #1 helped me plan some things.  She wants hot cocoa instead of tea, so I thought to put the little pastel marshmellows in a sugar bowl with sugar tongs.  She wanted chocolate chip cookies, so I was thinking a bag of the mini chips ahoys.  And she wanted little cut-out cheese sandwiches.  And maybe fruit sticks, though with the hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies I'm not sure they would taste good.

She wants to make things, too.  I was thinking a foam tiara, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought most girls would probably be wearing one already (maybe not), so how about a cardboard jewelry box?  I think I've seen those at hobby lobby.  We might string beads and make a necklace, but maybe that is too many crafts?

She also wanted to dance with scarves (because "that is what princesses do")  The only scarves we have are the ones from my grandmother that I let my girls play with - not enough for everyone.  I did keep some for myself, to keep pretty.  But I can't find any to buy that are inexpensive - not even the sheer kerchiefs that old ladies used to wear to protect their hair in the wind.  I need to check a beauty supply, but the only ones I could find online were too expensive, and ugly colors.  Maybe I'll buy some floaty, silky material and do a quick zig-zag around the edges with my sewing machine to "hem" them.

She wanted to invite 4 girls from her class at school, then 2 sisters from her bible class.  I thought to invite the 3rd sister, who is #2's age.  That would be a total of 9 girls, if everyone showed up.  I'm thinking of doing a RSVP with any allergy info, because there was a party we went to last year with a child who had dairy intolerance, and they had cake and ice cream.  She ended up getting potato chips and canned fruit.  And looked so very, very sad.

I'm going to take a picture of #1 in her princess dress, then make pop up cards for the invite.  That's as clever as I can think of right now - though a tea pot with a lid on top that you can pull up and read the invitation inserted inside would be cute too.  Just thought of that.  Now I have to make a choice!!  But I think the pop up would be way easier.

Rux, that party sounds amazing! She'll love it and I might have to copy the idea for Emma's party next year.

We went to a princess party over the summer and they made necklaces and tiaras. They didn't get bored but they also went over the 90 minutes the invitation listed as the party time.

Regarding the scarves, I know that JoAnne's has a bin of fabric scraps that are dirt cheap. I also found a bottle of stuff that stops fabric from fraying and it actually works (don't know the name of it, sorry!).

I agree with Taryn about SAHMs. At least I get a break from my kiddos every day (even though I love them dearly) by going to work. Moms are so hard on themselves! =]

Sounds like a fun party. My daughter would love it. We went to a princess parade at the rec center. They had a little class in which all the little princesses learned how to be a proper princess. They learned the proper princess wave, the curtsy, the princess twirl, and how to promenade (march and wave). They did a little art project which was to glue plastic little gems on a crown. After they were done they had a cupcake, which they had to eat delicatly with their pinkies up, the way all proper princessess do, and then paraded throughout the rec center. It was super cute! Maybe I'll give my daughter a princess party next summer when she turns five.

My son's birthday is november 23rd. It always tends to sneak up on me so we're just having his bday party at donato's pizza in their party room with a couple of his little friends. They are going to wear costumes. He's really excited, which I am glad, because I feel bad that I didn't put much effort into it.

When is the party?  I have some nice floaty material that I never used, but it would take at least two weeks to get it to you.

Spoiled_candy, that is such a sweet offer.  The party is the 12th of December, but I'm thinking the postage might be more than the fabric!

Erica, I'll definitely check out the scrap bins.  I'm only looking for a couple of yards, I think.  And the hem stuff sounds wonderful!

Lulu, if he is excited you've done your job!  Really, boys are harder than girls, I would think, because they aren't so artsy craftsy.  That is the kind of party we had last year, but we had to invite the entire preschool class if we were going to invite anyone, so there just wasn't much else to do!

And Taryn and Tessa - thanks!

Oh, and I've done really well calorie-wise so far today, plus 2 hours of sweeping, vaccuming, and steam-cleaning.  Woo-hoo!
