Well, it's July and the 4th is over. All done with Mother's, Father's, Birthdays, Anniversary, Memorial Day and July 4th. Are there any more excuses to eat stuff I know isn't good for me but tastes great! As Homer Simpson said, and I know it's not exact, if it doesn't have fat in it, it doesn't taste good.
I know some fat is needed; good fat, but ribs, BBQ chicken with the skin on, french fries, potato chips, potatoes salad; I know better. Although I've been pretty much maintaining, it won't belong before it sneaks up on me, it always does. And then I get mad at myself, because I know better! Wow! A common theme; I know better!
I need to eat to keep myself on track and not feel tired and cold all the time; not really a problem for me anymore; but I've got to eat less crap!
Maybe July 6th will become my Independence Day; independence from crap!

Did the 5K in 31:47 and then walked another 6 miles between back and forth from the convention center and walking around the exhibits. This is the largest conference I've ever been to; like 29,000 firefighters.
About 300 ran this morning; a couple in their bunker gear (real macho guys!) and a team of cadets and a crew in their full bunker gear walked it to show support and rasise $$ for the cause.
The Zicam and vitamins seemed to do the trick and I'm sure the Jack or Jim and Diet Coke killed some germs too! LOL I haven't had this much to drink in a year, little to say in one week. But I am away, not driving and hanging with the boys. Feeling great today post the 5K just a little snotty.
Exhibits again tomorrow, then fly back to Orlando and another 5K Sunday morning. If it doesn't kill me, it will make me stronger.
Not sure if I've totally killed the diet or not. Eating a lot but walking a lot also, so hopefully it evens out. The scale will tell Monday AM....
I'll be good again starting tomorrow...all the partying will be over unless I stayed for another night... Not!
Thanks for the thoughts and advice.

I'm away on business this week at the premier fire department instructors' conference and caught a wicked cold on Monday! I'm trying to enjoy myself and attnd the classes, but it's hard. I go between period of feeling pretty good and feeling like sh*t! even on medications. I was smart enough to bring day and night quil-type products, lots of Ibuprofen and bought some Zicam... I'm not really sure any of it is helping too much. I did try to burn it out a bit Monday evening by doing some Jack and Diet Coke until my face was numb. Don't worry, that is only three for me! I'm a lightweight, what can I say :-).
I am enjoying some of the restaurants and eating a little too much, but on the bright side between walking to and from the convention center and around it all day i'm doing between 6 and 9 miles per day! Bonus! Let's me enjoy the food somewhat if I didn't feel like crap!
I'm still slated to run the Courage and Valor 5K on Friday morning. I really want to do it and not wimp out. I also have a run on Sunday after I get back for a brother that is down with cancer. Man, I really want this cold to be over.
Any ideas!?

I've been maintaining for the last three weeks. Not that I'm complaining (Much!) but I'd like the scale to budge a little. Problem is I like to eat and I'm exercising a lot and need to eat. My weekly average hasben like 100 calories over my Eat Meter daily but that should still net me some movement in the scale! Right!? I mean if I'm eating 2700 versus 3500 less calories a week, there should be some movement. And no, I don't think there is ant muscle gain......

Off on Good fRiday and hping to enjoy the day, get some exercise, maybe take in a brainless movies and possibly eat some sushi! We'll see but it is a chance to sleep in (versus my normal 4:30 wake up time M-F) and chill with some coffee and the computer in the AM before I go out for a nice run.
I need the break! Whew!

Well, I ran a 5K yesterday and it's been an entire year since I've done that. In fact, the last 5K I did (other than on a treadmill) was this same race last year.
I decided to start running again when I received an invite for a firefighter friend's benefit run. seems he came down with a diagnosis of spinal cancer in late November and by January it bacame inoperable. The guy is just a few years older than me and has done a lot. Good guy. What a shame!
I have another 5K planned for April 11th (another F/F benefit run in IN) and then my friend's run on the 13th. I'm sure I can do it but am sore this AM and can feel it. Outdoors is SO different than running on the treadmill even at an incline! Did OK; 32:33, not too shabby for a 46 year-old guy... except there were 50, 60 and 70 year-olds running... some faster than me. and they're probably not whining today. :-)....

Higher protein and lower carbs is working well for me. I'm feeling a bit better about myself, clothes feel better and feel more energized in the gym.
Did sushi yeaterday with my son; tried to be ultra-conservative with calories and ultra-intense with exercise beforehand and felt dizzy until I ate lunch. Probably not a good idea to do all the time, but the sushi was great! Yum! But did feel a bit guilty and a bit bloated from all of the sushi rice.
Purposely weighed in yeaterday morning before the gorge but not after working out so I should have been at a "normal" weigh-in state; not exagerated one way or another. 236! Wow!
Still missing all the bread (bagels, rolls, biscuits) and my oatmeal (used to eat itevery day) but I do like the taste and texture of the Ezekiel (sp?) bread. Still has carbs but all veggie carbs....

So far it appears the higher protein, lower carbohydrate path is working out for me. I think I had an actual loss the week before, but retained salt and water so the weigh in was high; then an amazing losss the last week. So I must have shed the salt and water retained.
I need to cut my salt intake but everything has salt, even stuff I wouldn't think has it. I'm usually over 4,000 mg each day even when I'm trying to avoid it!
Well, I'm going to keep trying although I'm missing my oatmeal, bread and occasional pasta (It's not like I was stuffing them in!)

OK: Seems it was just water weight; even though Idid pig ut, way out, especially on Saturday! What was I thinking. Weight has been consistent at 243 for two days.
I started really watching carbs and increasing protien; we'll see how that works. Also cutting calories on days I'm not working out and even on days I do, just not as much.
Progress, one day at a time!

Well, did okay my first few days away, but then the free vendor-sponsored dinners came along, old friends came along and then I just said WTF. Boy that endeded badly. Ate about 4K over where I should be to lose weight. I did work out most days even found a Y while I was there. But this AM the scale said a 3 lb. gain! Could be some water weight due to all the excess sodium, but I'm not counting on it.
. Really, no need to cry; I did it to myself.
That's better!
