I'm away on business this week at the premier fire department instructors' conference and caught a wicked cold on Monday! I'm trying to enjoy myself and attnd the classes, but it's hard. I go between period of feeling pretty good and feeling like sh*t! even on medications. I was smart enough to bring day and night quil-type products, lots of Ibuprofen and bought some Zicam... I'm not really sure any of it is helping too much. I did try to burn it out a bit Monday evening by doing some Jack and Diet Coke until my face was numb. Don't worry, that is only three for me! I'm a lightweight, what can I say :-).
I am enjoying some of the restaurants and eating a little too much, but on the bright side between walking to and from the convention center and around it all day i'm doing between 6 and 9 miles per day! Bonus! Let's me enjoy the food somewhat if I didn't feel like crap!
I'm still slated to run the Courage and Valor 5K on Friday morning. I really want to do it and not wimp out. I also have a run on Sunday after I get back for a brother that is down with cancer. Man, I really want this cold to be over.
Any ideas!?
You seem to have it under control, as much as a human can control a bug. I would do the 5K, but maybe at 50% exertion. My cold still makes it self known by running out of my nose and sucking my energy, but I gave it a couple days and now I won't let it have any more. Make sure to slam a can or 2 of V-8 here and there and take some B vitamins (found conveniently in the 5 Hour Energy shots) and Vitamin C. Bombard your body with as much goodness as possible. Rest when you can. What kind of cancer does your brother have? I had Leukemia once, it sucks. I hope he is doing well. |
prayers out to your fellow fire fighter. If you don't think it would be too weird, try some herbal remedies. Immune boosting is the quickest path to recovery, IMO, so I would recommend some echinacea (sp) and goldenseal (you need an equal mix of both to enhance the effect). I use a product that I get at Publix, so you could prolly find some pretty easily. I also use Zinc Losenges (the kind you suck on like a sweet tart) - but you have to be careful about drinking anything with citric acid for a half hour before and after, as if diminshes the effect. And you have to suck on them, rather than chewing or they can make you feel a bit queasy. I know it's kinda 'hippie' - but it works. :) |
