It's a new year!

I hope the new year finds everyone well!

It feels like it's been ages since I journalled. My weight is up a bit from Christmas, but I am not concerned. Over the last year I lost over 30 pounds which is more than any year before. Here's to getting to my goal weight in 2009!!

I just thought I'd journal to let you guys know that I am not planning on making calorie count a priority at this time. I love reading journals, writing journals and browsing the forums, but I have been spending too much time where I should be working, hanging out with Josh, or focusing on making friends in washington. I want everyone to know that I am thinking of you. I will try to check in as often as I can.

Okay - I have to write. It'll only be a few minutes and then I promise to get back to work.

Work is going great by the way - I just had my review and I am doing great, they think I am well on my way to becoming a lead engineer someday (exactly what I want) and plan to give me more independent projects next year (exactly what I want). On the other hand there are no raises this year due to the bad economy. Icky. But at least I have a job.

I just got off the phone with my brother who made his excuses for not making it up for christmas. I was pretty pleased with my response, I told him what for in nice understanding, diplomatic tones. Basically, I understand that he is torn between his wife's family and us and I let him know that there were always options and he should have made his decision and let us know well ahead of time so that we weren't dissappointed ect. Blah blah blah.

What I wanted to yell at him (after I got off the phone of course) was that he was making a huge mistake. That he does this to us every year. That it is not a huge insult to miss christmas - but he frequently makes a promise and then breaks it, if he does come he comes at the last minute and leaves as soon as possible - and in everything he does he sends a very clear message that he feels obligated to spend time with us but doesn't want to.

The huge mistake I think he is making is that he is letting himself feel obligated (and hence torn, rebellious, and resentful ect) and he's missing out on all the good parts of christmas and life in general. He's not unique - in fact I feel he is pretty mainstream on this - but one day he will probably regret it.

Next year, I am going to start a betting pool. Each family member can put in when he will make his excuses - 1 month, 2 weeks, 1 week, or 1 day before christmas. Maybe we can even guess what his excuse will be 1. traffic, 2. came last year, 3. wife's relatives. In fact, he REALLY wants to come up and see my new house! I think I will start a pool whether it will be in the next 6 months, ect.

I feel I have every right to make fun of him! He has definitely earned it!

**edit** After all, I would totally rather spend christmas with my wife's parents who are cranky, unable to travel and might otherwise be all alone on christmas, even though they live 20 minutes away rather than have a fun, festive party with relatives who drove 100's of miles to see me. Wouldn't you?

Happy Friday!

I recommend the core diet to anyone wanting a change. I have been eating so much lately - tons of core foods and treats here and there - and my weight is staying steady / going down slowly. I've been eating tons of fruits and vegetables and milk because I'm not worried about saving calories. I think my body is much happier for it. I feel well fed and well nourished. I'm sure I will lose even more after I stop eating the varied cookies and desserts at work .

I hung out with Josh yesterday, we did all his errands (which was hard for me because I have A LOT to do around the house). I was right, he's been cranky lately because he's homesick and lonely, his friends at work are flaky and not great (something I already knew!) so he was particularly hurt that I didn't have time for him lately.

I miss you guys at work

I miss you guys at work. It's not the same to just journal in the mornings - since my brain is usually too foggy to say anything meaningful.

I have been not tracking for over a week now and I haven't gained any weight. I might have lost weight - I don't know since my weight is all over the place. Today I am only 1 pound over my pre-thanksgiving weight. I am partly following the core plan and partly cheating horribly because I'm not used to it yet. Yesterday was free pizza day at work and it took all my willpower not to eat a third piece despite the fact that the two pieces were bad enough AND I was going to be uncomfortably full if I ate it. There have also been cookies at work too, and I know there will be more cookies today.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Cookies and chocolate

I gave in to a cookie and a chocolate at work yesterday. I also snagged one of those "gift" pears - but it was hard as a rock, so maybe in a week . . .

I dragged myself to spin class yesterday - I am either getting sick or I'm sore from the mt. biking (or both), I found spin class a lot harder than usual, so I took it easy.

My weight is pretty persistently up around 163. It's sad because I was finally starting to see 160-161 before thanksgiving. My heart just isn't in it. I am loving the core plan, but doing my fair share of cheating, so I don't know if it is working or not. I want to stick with it, just try to cheat less - I think I will get used to it soon.

First ever mountain biking . . .

Josh and I went to a park that was supposed to be good for beginners and it was - pretty flat with a good map and you could tell easily from map which was hard (wiggly line called wired brain) and which was easy (straight line called donald duck). It was actually really fun, and I did great.

I also went to spin class saturday, so I burnt a lot of calories this weekend.

I have no idea if I ate decent or bad this weekend - I didn't keep track very well. Saturday morning breakfact was oatmeal then after spinning we went to Ihop and I ate an entire garden omelete with tons of cheese, and two pancakes with syrup. I had a snack late afternoon then went to a wine tasting were I ate a lot of the pita&hummus and ham, cheese and crackers. Dinner was stew at about 9:00. Sunday breakfast was potatos and eggs, lunch was chili and oriental chicken salad from freddies, dinner was a double stack from wendy's, frozen veggies w/ soy sauce, stewed apples and tons of popcorn.

Last night

Josh and I went out to applebees to celebrate the fact that I still have my job. Beware the dessert shooters - according to "the daily plate", the mouse shooter I shared with Josh had 541 calories! I already knew that the spinach dip was bad, when I looked it up a 1/2 order is 452 calories. Hopefully that includes the chips. I guess I will have to be really good this weekend.

Update . . .

My boss came by to tell me personally (and everybody else) that "he is done doing what he had to do". I can't believe how great a boss he is. I know that I'm certainly happier this evening because of it. One more engineer was laid off today (I thought that they were done yesterday!) so I was feeling pretty concerned. The total is 3 engineers out of 20.

By the way, I am going to try to stop going online to calorie count at work - I will still journal and comment in the mornings and evenings.

Good bad news . . .

So apparently I made the first cut . . . since I just found out that two of the engineers were let go yesterday too.

Icky!

I am feeling selfish (my job is very important to me) although I am hoping that everything goes well for them.

Day two on the core plan . . .

My weight is back down to 161 which is my pre-thanksgiving weight. Yay!

Nobody has laid me off yet, so that's good news. Hopefully my luck will continue. I plan on updating my resume and doing some low profile searching/networking, just in case. My company repeatedly reported that we were doing fine and that the economy wasn't affecting us yet. That's the problem, they never tell you the entire story. I feel terrible for the people who were laid off (both in my own company and across the nation), but it's hard to feel sufficiently bad because I am too scared for my own job.

Today I am eating:

Breakfast: oatmeal w/ cinnamon, mandarin orange, milk and 1 tsp flaxseed(0 points)

Snack1: Orange

Lunch: Salmon w/ butternut squash, brocolli and red pepper.

Snack2: Banana, and 2 rice cakes w/ sugar free jam

Dinner: Roast with carrots, potato, sweet potato, tomato & onions.
