Entry Jan 17 2007 14:09

Well the scale arrived.  They even upgraded me from the XL-440 to the XL-550, which has a max capacity of 550 lbs (instead of the 440 of the old one).  Although I am happy to have it back, I am not happy with the results.  In fact, I am stumped.  I have been on my diet (only binged once - and that was about 3 weeks ago, before the New Year) and I have been exercising (except the last few days because I can not get to the gym due to the ice) and it is telling me I GAINED 10 lbs in the last month.  How is this possible???????  I did not go below 1200 calories at any point in time so I know I did not go into starvation mode.  I am so disgusted right now.  My husband says that it is just more confirmation that this is most likely a thyroid condition that I am dealing with.  As I am writing this, I am sitting on hold with the Drs office to make an appointment.  She did not take me seriously last time so I am hoping she will this time.  All I know is I am SOOOOOOOOOO pissed off and disgusted and mad and right now in NO mood to eat anything at all, which I know is wrong, I need to eat, but I just can not bring it to my mouth.  All I want to do is cry.  I want to hide and not come out.  It feels like everything I've been doing - watching calories, the exercises, trying to stay positive, trying to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night, trying (though not always succeeding) on my waters, avoiding a lot of foods that I normally would have scarfed down and binged on - is for NOTHING.  I am really in the "why f'n bother" mood right now.  I was already in a depressed mood, and frustrated and disgusted and a ton of other things not related to my weight loss.  Now I can add this frustration and issue to my pile.

ARGH -- and I am on eternal hold with the doctor's office.  Five more minutes and I'm hanging up and trying again later.  It's already been 20 minutes.

ARGH -- my keyboard is being finicky.... sometimes I can hit the ' key and it works fine and other times it opens up the 'find' option at the bottom of my screen, and it's really annoying!  And I don't know how to disable that function.  Anyone have any ideas?  I'm using Mozilla Firefox and Windows XP.

I'll be back later.  Gonna go hibernate and get away from everyone and everything for a while.

EDIT:  Got appointment.  My old doctor is no longer there and I have been referred to another doctor in the clinic.  Earliest appt is Feb 12th at 3 PM, so I took it.  I asked about the thyroid test, as I am going to discuss it with the doctor - asked if I needed to do any special preparations for it should he decide to do it that day, and she checked and came back and said "no".  She thought it was a fasting test (I did too!) however she said that they are telling her no, it is not a fasting test.

So for another month I get to struggle.  Great.  Just peachy-f'n-keenie.

Be Back Later.

EDIT
:  Just thought I'd share this:

What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism?
Symptoms of hypothyroidism are usually very subtle and gradual and may be mistaken for symptoms of depression. The following are the most common symptoms of hypothyroidism. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

  • dull facial expressions
  • hoarse voice
  • slow speech
  • droopy eyelids
  • puffy and swollen face
  • weight gain
  • constipation
  • sparse, coarse and dry hair
  • coarse, dry, and thickened skin
  • carpal tunnel syndrome (hand tingling or pain)
  • slow pulse
  • muscle cramps
  • orange-colored soles and palms
  • sides of eyebrows thin or fall out
  • confusion
  • increased menstrual flow in women

Untreated hypothyroidism may lead to anemia, low body temperature, and heart failure.

From this site

The symptoms I have are highlighted in red.  They also said that severe depression (which I have) can be a symptom, as well as fatigue, weakness, irritability, memory loss, and decreased libido. (For me, the decreased libido connects to the depression.)

That really sucks babe. I know it's hard to deal with setbacks like that, but you know that you're doing the right thing so you have to just keep at it. It's definitely a good idea to go talk to your doctor and if she won't listen to you, you need to find a new one! Your doctor should ALWAYS take your concerns seriously.

I'm not sure if you've thought of this already, but it's certainly a possibility: it could be that because it's a different scale, it could be reading you differently. My scale at home always reads me 8lbs lighter than the scale at my parents place and the scale at the gym reads me 3lbs heavier. Because I weigh the most often at my place, I just take that reading and try not to weigh myself anywhere else.

So you can take that 10lbs, but know that you are doing right by your body and YOUR BODY KNOWS THAT. Your body is getting healthy in its own little ways that you might not be noticing right now. I know that you can do this so I want you to get your chin up and keep on moving. Rock it like you know you can, honey!

Willow!  Hang in there sweety.  Perhaps the scale is calibrated a bit differently than before.  That is very possible.  I weigh a few pounds differently from scale to scale.  I know it's hard, but keep to it.  :)  Kelly

Hang in there.. many scales are calibrated differently. I weigh like 8 lbs less at my boyfriend's parents' house =P check back on this scale in a week or two and see if it shows any change.
so who knows? Maybe this doctor will know something that will help you!

btw, I think a thyroid test is a blood test.. when I got mine checked, it was.

good luck {{hugs}}

i vote for a change in the scale!!!

You did lose that 10 lbs...., you just were higher than you thought!!!

that means we need to celebrate 10 lbs off...???  i'm ready with balloons & streamers ;)

all kidding aside... did you ever match up your scale to the docs?  meaning this time when you go... get weighed then go straight home and make sure your's says the same as the docs...

{{{hugs}}}

i understand the discouraging... you'll get this whipped!  hang in!

I've had several thyroid tests in the last 2 years.  Some were fasting -( these were also done with my complete physical blood work) and I've had 2 done in the afternoon and having ate.  I wish you the very best of luck with your test.  Its kind of a hope its negative as having a thyroid condition can't be fun - but also hope its positive so you have a reaston and a way to fight the weight and maybe get it under control.

If you had gained 10 lbs. wouldn't you have noticed it in the way your clothes fit? That seems a lot not to make a difference. Good idea to check at the doctors. When they check your blood for sugar it is a fasting test not usually for thyroid. Hang in there. (((HUGS)))

I echo above.  It's a new scale.  A new start.  Keep logging your food and activity, keep hydrated.

You're in my thoughts and prayers, and I wish you well at your next doctor appt!

Like I said yesterday I had my thyroid checked so many times recently because I too had/have many of those symptoms of Hypothyroidism.  In my case it was negative.  So antidepressants and lots of exercise are all I can do to help.
