Entry A New Day
May 17 2007 13:15

Well, I just gave myself my first injection of Byetta.  I was a little hesitant about it - I *hate* needles! - however it wasn't as bad as I thought.  I used to help my mom with hers when she wasn't feeling well, so I had some kind of experience, but it's different when it's on your own body!  I had gone to the class last night - quite informative actually.  The R.N. who runs it specializes with diabetic patients and said she has 6 right now that are using Byetta and 2 of them had been trying to lose weight and have done so after starting the Byetta.  I think I'm starting to understand the reason why this endo. doctor put me on it and if I'm right, then ok, I'll go along with it.  I *still* don't agree with his whole "1200 calories or less" thing and I'm still staying with my 1700-1800 calorie diet, however I'll do the Byetta thing.  She did tell me I should be monitoring my blood glucose, however the doctor didn't give me a meter, so I'm calling him in a few mins (when they're back from lunch) and ask about getting one.  Fun fun.  More needles.  I also asked her, since I didn't seem to see a lot of results from the exercising, if the Byetta is going to help with the whole muscle/fat thing (she had mentioned about insulin and sugar and the muscles and fat and such) and she said I should see a difference.  She was impressed that I had already lost 33 lbs and was already very much in to a fitness routine so she said I was already doing a big majority of my part to control my diabetes.  I'm just hoping that eventually I'll have it enough under control (and have lost the weight) that I may not have to continue using this.  I really don't want to be dependent on injections for the rest of my life.  I saw my mother go through it and watched her diabetes just get more out of control (however, then again she didn't do anything to control it until it was much too late), and I don't want to end up like that.  Yesterday, on the way to the class, it was sort of like having a face-to-face with my mortality and the fact that I am getting old(er) and I'm not liking it, and I'm not facing it gracefully.  It's more like I'm going, kicking and screaming.

Anyways, it's almost 1:30.  I need to grab something light to eat and get Wes up and get dressed.  We are heading to the gym after we pick up Rebecca from school.  We have been trying really hard to get back in the 'every other day' routine for the gym like we used to.  It gets hard when there are appointments and such, so sometimes its just 3-days-a-week but not necessarily every other day.  If I can get a 4th day in, I'm happy!  So I've been "supplementing" the exercising with walking around at the store and such.  Usually its one of the big stores, like Wal-Mart's SuperCenter.  Usually we're shopping for an hour or more and it's STILL walking, and I log it in, so I'm still getting the exercise.

So I'm heading off for now.  By the way, anyone check out these CC stats?  Pretty impressive, if I do say so myself!!

Have a good one everyone!

Sounds like things are doing well.

In my opinion, it's best to face aging "kicking and screaming" instead of some namby-pamby idea of doing it gracefully. Screw that noise! I will be more fit, strong and healthy with each passing year, and so will you.

Sounds like a plan.  I hope it works for you.
I hear you about the 1200 calories.  I have a hard time staying at around 1700.
Keep up the good work!
