Entry HELP
Nov 27 2006 02:09

For the last 2 days, despite every effort, I am having the mad munchies.  I have been drinking water til its coming out of my ears, been trying to have low calorie snacks, eat the right foods, try to stay as active as possible (hurt my knee on the treadmill Friday so I'm sort of hobbling right now) however no matter what I do I can't seem to shake these CRAVINGS for food.  I know this sounds so weird, but it's like my body and my stomach hasn't seen any food for months and it's trying to play catch up.  I keep telling myself "you've done so good, don't blow it... get a grip on it" but it's driving me nuts.  The more I try *not* to think about it, the worse the cravings get.  I don't want to undo the hard work I've done so far, however these munchies are driving me crazy.  I don't know what to do.  At this point I'm afraid even the low calorie snacks and stuff are gonna set me over the limit.  I feel awful - like I'm failing somehow - cuz I can't get these cravings under control.  I don't want to fail.  I don't want to gain back what I've lost.  I know it's not much - it's only 20 lbs, not like I've lost 100 - but I'm so afraid if I gain anything that that will be it - there will be no more dieting and I'll be fat forever, and I don't want that either.  And yet, even knowing all that, and reminding myself of all that, these cravings are just intense.

HELP.

Entry Woot - new weight and new measurements
Nov 25 2007 16:40

Well, as of today's weighing, I am 391.5, which I am totally shocked *and* psyched about! That brings me to 20.5 lbs lost, total, since I started this diet on 9/3/06.  It seems I will lose quite a bit, then stall for about 2 weeks and either plateau or fight the same few lbs, and then lose a bit more, then do the whole stalling thing for a couple more weeks.  As long as its coming off, I'm happy.

Took my measurements today (which brought on my topic thread on measurements in the Weight Loss Forum - see here).  Here is what I have:

Overall Measurements from 10/23 to 11/25:  - 2"

Ok.. now what is really weird is I have been doing resistance exercises for the last month - and I started up the cardio exercises within the last week or so.  I have some areas that have gone down, and some that have actually increased, which I don't understand.  For example, going from my last measurements on 10/23 to today:

Forearm:   13"  to   13 1/2"
Calf:   22"  to  23 5/8"  (heck, even from start at 23 1/2"!)

This is what made me think that maybe I'm not doing the same areas each time - not intentionally, just because I'm not remembering right.  I know we can't really do spot exercises to get rid of fat in specific places, but this is ridiculous.  On the positive though - I have lost a total of 1 5/8" off my waist, and 2 3/4" off my hips, and 1 7/8" off my upper arms!  So I am happy about those.  I have been going to the gym every other day, and I recently increased the number of reps and/or the amount of weight I'm using on the resistance machines.  My favorite machine is the Power Leg Press (and I added a new routine on it, to help my calf area) and my 2nd favorite machine is the Lat Pull Down.  There are a couple of the arm machines that I like (and one I *hate*).  I also added in the treadmill and the elliptical trainer recently, for more cardio.  (I have pretty much moved away from the bike as I'm finding these other exercises are keeping me more dedicated to my routine.  The bike was getting a bit 'boring'.)

Anyways, just wanted to post my results.
Hope you are all having a good weekend.  Take care and ::hugs::

Entry Happy Birthday to me... woot.
Nov 19 2006 20:08

Well, it's official... I'm now old.
Today is my 42nd birthday and keep telling family and the few friends that its just another day, nothing to get all worked up over.  For the 4th year in a row my mother has managed to ruin it for me, so I have gotten to the point of why bother celebrating?  It's just another day.  ::sigh::

Still struggling with the same few pounds that I have been for the last couple of weeks.  I can get down to 396ish and then bounce up to about 401.  It's like my body doesn't want to get far from that 400-lb mark - even though *I* want to get FAR from it - way below it to be honest.  Why is my body working against me?  I keep plugging away with the food and the exercising.  I have even increased things in my workouts - either the # of reps, or the actual weight I'm using.  I know I'm burning because I'm usually sweaty when I'm done.  So what gives?  I'm drinking my water (though I will admit that I didn't do as well for 2 of the days this last week - could that affect the weight loss THAT much?).

Anyways, hope you are all doing well and getting ready for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday (for those in the States).  I am just hoping to get through it without gaining.  If I can lose, then it's a bonus!

::hugs:: to all....

Entry Passing on the Info ...
Nov 10 2006 22:49

my post from the thread, found here:

Actually, I brought this up on another thread, that a concern of mine was when my current clothes got so big for me that I wouldn't be able to wear them anymore.  While I can't wait for that day to happen, being on a very fixed income will make purchasing new clothes quite difficult, so I asked around for suggestions and someone said to look around for something like a weight-loss clothing exchange group.  So I looked around and the only thing I could find was a resource for those who have had bariatric surgery, and most of them needed verification of the surgery in order to take advantage of it.  Well that's all well and good for those who have had the procedure, but what about those of us doing it the old fashion way?  So I took it upon myself earlier today to make up my own exchange group here.

Feel free to check it out - it's a totally free group for people from all walks of life, all around the globe.  The idea is that those of us who have worked our way out of our bigger clothes can swap them in for something that might fit is better.  Makes sense?  And if you are offering a bigger size, and someone on the list knows someone that can use it, then by all means, let them know.  I just started the list today (a few hours ago, actually), and just finished making up the group home picture, so haven't gotten to inviting anyone.  You all are the first!!  Feel free to pass on the info to those you might think might be interested.

EDIT:  11/23/06:  Was going to post about the exchange group in the forums, however promotional posts are not allowed, so that nixes that idea.  The only thing I can say is if you, or anyone you know, is interested, you can check out the group at this link:  WLCE.
Thanks!!

Entry It's always something....
Nov 07 2006 14:17

Well, I was hoping, when we started going back to the gym on Saturday, that we would be getting back into a regular routine.  However we have been slightly delayed, although through no-one's fault.  Last Saturday, after we went to the gym, we came back home and Becka had made a salad and put some little crispy chicken strips in hers (cut up).  So at some point she hands me the salad to head to the bathroom.  A few minutes later she comes out with paper wadded up in her mouth.  It appears she had a broken (cracked?) tooth and when she bit down on the crispy chicken it broken it totally.  She couldn't get it stop bleeding and the pain was really bad.  Unfortunately, most of the dentists here don't accept her insurance, and I was concerned about the bleeding, so took her to the ER.  They gave her Tylenol 3 and anti-biotics (so she wouldn't get an infection in the now-open area of her gum).  Half of the tooth is still in her mouth - the other is gone.  So after calling around 5 places yesterday, managed to find her a place that will see her tonite.  A local ministry that holds a dental clinic on 1 or 2 Tuesdays per month - they have students and faculty come in from OU College of Dentistry.  There is a fee, based on your income and other factors.  I'm just glad I was able to find some place to take her.  So yesterday, we didn't go.  Tonite, because I don't know how long we'll be, we aren't going.  I wasn't feeling well on Sunday.  :: sigh ::  Oh well, Goddess willing and the creek don't rise, I'll be going tomorrow some time.  ::smile::

Anyways... hope you are all having a wonderful day!  It's actually quite nice here.  We shut off the heat and opened the windows to air out the house.  Figured might as well take advantage of the nice day as winter is coming and we probably won't have too many more of them before it hits.

Take care all~!

Nov 03 2006 13:59

OK... not sure how this happened....

Two nights ago, we did our once-a-month chinese food meal, and went to a local chinese buffet place.  (Unlike back home in MA, most chinese restaurants here are not sit-down places, but buffet places - good and bad).  I think, for the most part, I did ok.  I had some hot & sour soup (my addiction!) and then I just had very small amounts of what I picked from the different appetizers, and instead of the Gen'l Tsao's Chicken (with the peanuts) that I get about 75% of the time, I chose the Chicken Chow Mein, which is lower in calories and fat (still high in sodium, but guess you can't have it all), and instead of having soda with my meal, I had about 3 glasses of ice water.  I took my time eating, enjoyed the food and the company.

Last night, because we haven't done the monthly shopping for the house (food stamps don't come in til the 3rd, which is today), we ended up doing McDonalds.  Now I know most say the Asian Chicken Salad is a decent choice, however I don't like the taste of it.  Sorry.  I really hadn't had anything to eat all day at that point (not a conscious thing - we were busy doing stuff) so I ended up having the bulk of my calories in McDonalds.  I ended up getting a medium fry (when I used to get the supersize one) and only drank about 1/2 the drink - and switched to my big glass of water towards the end of the meal.  I did get a QP w/cheese, which is about 530 cals according to the McD's site.   And I realized last night, as I was eating, that I haven't even had any McD's in 2 months.  Considering there is a McD's about 4 blocks from us, I'm doing REALLY good!!!

Anyways... with those 2 days, I really had braced myself to step on the scale today and see a gain.  And it would have been deserved, and I'd have had no one to blame but myself, and I was prepared. Well, it surprised me - I lost!  I am now 397.6!   Talk about shock - but I'll take it!!  Makes me happy!!

So anyway, we are off today to do our dreaded errands and hopefully (maybe) swing by the gym and do a routine -- time permitting.  We have a list of things that need to be done today, and one that can only be done today (making the payment for the Angel Food pickup for later this month).  Becka also has detention today, so instead of getting her around now (2:10), we have to pick her up around 2:45, so that is figuring in to how/when we do which of the errands.  It also doesn't help that the AF place is in one direction, the gym is in a totally opposite direction, and the place to make the phone payment and groceries in a 3rd direction.  Oh yea...and the bank, which is kinda, sorta on the way to the phone place and groceries.  I figure that with all the running around and walking in the stores and stuff that I'll be doing, I'll be getting a good chunk of exercise today!!  LOL

Hope you are all having a wonderful day, and keep up the good work with your diet & exercise plans.  We can do it!!!

Entry Hello 300's!!
Nov 01 2006 10:08

Woot!  Stepped on the scale this AM and it read 399.8!  Hello 300's!!

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingPhotobucket - Video and Image HostingPhotobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I have been dealing with a mini-plateau for the last week-ish, bouncing around the same .5-1 lb, so didn't really have much to write about.  Life is same old-same old.  Right now I'm dealing with a backache that is so bad it's given me a headache - don'tcha love those?  I'd have stayed in bed but the pain was too bad I couldn't just lay there anymore, so got up to take some Tylenol and hope it helps.

I am also hoping/planning on going to the gym again, starting this month.  It appears that, despite filling out the paper for them to not take out the payment (and we had even stated we were changing payment method!) they took the payment out of the credit card last month anyways, so we could have gone all that month since it was, essentially, paid.  ::sigh::  If I had known, I would have gone, since it was paid for.  Didn't find out about this until yesterday when the credit card statement arrived in the mail.  So guess we are gonna have to do some "talking" to the people at the gym, and also make SURE they changed the payment method, as we did notify them in writing, and gave them the new payment method information.  I swear, it's always something!!

Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween - and for my pagan friends, a Blessed Samhain.  We didn't do the whole passing-out-candy this year, so no candy in the house to tempt me.  However my daughter did make M&M cookies, and I had a couple of them.  Hey, haven't had them in awhile, and my calories for the day allowed me the indulgence.

Take care everyone.  ::hugs::

Entry Week 7 Challenge, Part 5: Get Up & Move! Look Back @ Weights & Measurements!
Oct 23 2006 14:54

Weights and Measurements...

Well, when I stepped on the scale this AM, it showed me at 401.6 lbs, which means I am losing!  So far I have lost about 8 lbs, which is awesome!  My BMI is 71 which is WAY over the healthy range for a woman my age and height, however with continued healthy eating and exercising, it should go down.  However my measurements are going up and down since the first time, and they are all over the board!!  Here's what they are currently (just did them) and prior measurements (9/18 being the start):

                            9/18                     9/27                  10/23                  +/-

  Neck:                     16 1/2"                      16                           16                  -1/2"
Upper Arm                 24"                       23                               23 3/4           -1/4"
Forearm                    13"                       13 1/4                       13                  -1/4"
   Wrist                      7 1/4"                        7 3/8"                   7 1/2"           +1/4"
    Chest                       63 3/4"                 64                          62 1/2            -1 1/2"
Cup Size                      DD                             DD                        DD                  ----
Waist                    58 3/8"                      57 3/4"                58 1/2"           +1/8"
Hips                      72 1/2"                       71 1/2"                71 1/4"           -1 1/4"
Thigh                    36 1/8"                        34 3/8                  36                  -1/8
Calf                       23 1/2                             24                       22                   -2"
Ankle                    11 1/2"                          11 3/8                 11                   -1/2"

Ok, so I can't get the whole centering thing down, but you get the rough idea!!

The +/- I show is overall, from start to current, so it takes into consideration any plusses and minuses along the way.  I lost a total of 4.375" and gained .375", which means I lost a total of 4", overall.  Wow, when I think of it that way, I feel much better than seeing that I gained 1/8" on my waist, for example!

::Continues with the mantra 'the scale and measuring tape are my friends' ::

Entry Week 7 Challenge, Part 1, Sections a through e
Oct 21 2006 23:31

  • a)  *Weight* a Minute!!!
    • Do you want to gain, maintain or lose weight?
    • Do you Like to Weigh yourself & How Often?
    • Have you been thinking about changing what you do
    • Take a moment to write down, in some personal place, just what you do, why and what you would like to change over the next 6 weeks?
    • If you don't get weighed, that's ok!  Sometimes it's better to put the scales in storage!  The point is to figure out what you do and why!  Then let's keep doing it as long as it works for us in our lives :)  Everyone adjusts what they do when something quits working!  Including Weighing ourselves :)
I want to lose weight until I get to my goal of approxiimately 135 lbs.  Since I have never been that weight as an adult, I am keeping it a little bit flexible - I may want to go down to 130, or I may be o.k. at 140.  I am using 135 lbs as an "average" for my goal weight.

As for weighing myself, I admit that since getting the newer digital scale, I will weigh myself every day, upon waking and after using the bathroom.  I find that I don't hate the scale like I used to (wow I used to DREAD stepping on a scale before and would use any excuse to get out of it), however now I use it to help me be accountable to myself and for what I am doing (food, exercise, etc).  And I *really* enjoy watching those numbers go DOWN!!!!  What an awesome feeling to know that I am doing the work to make it do that too!  It helps me to feel that *I* am in control instead of the food and the weight being in control of ME.

  • b) *Get Up & Move*
    • Do you Exercise and How?
    • Do any activity intentionally during the weekdays or on weekends?
    • Have you been thinking about changing what you do?
    • Take a moment to write down, in some personal place, just what you do, why and what you would like to change over the next 6 weeks?
    • If you have already thought about this and intentionally avoid a formal Exercise Plan, that's ok!  Sometimes it's better to just get up and move spontaneously!  The point is to figure out what you do and why!  Then let's keep doing it as long as it works for us in our lives :)  Everyone adjusts what they do when something quits working!  Including How & When we Exercise :)

Yes I do exercise, although I will admit that I could probably do more.  We had to put the fitness gym on "hold" for the month of October so we could get some of our bills caught up, however as it looks now we should be able to unfreeze it in November, which means I'll be able to get back into the swing of going every other day, and I am actually looking forward to doing that.  I do try to do stuff around the house to sort of 'make up' for what I haven't been doing at the gym - and I log in stuff like the time I spent doing housework and other work around the house (for example, yard work).  Instead of loading all the dishes into the dishwasher, I will now stand and do some of them by hand.  I know, doesn't sound like much, but for me to stand there for 15 minutes and wash them by hand means I burn a little over 100 calories, and every little bit counts!!  I sometimes find myself thinking about what I can possibly do to burn off some calories - especially if I went over my calories for the day.  ::blush::  I will even log in the time that my husband and I have some "fun".  lol  Hey, it's burning calories!!!

About a week ago I bought 3-lb hand weights and have been using them when I've been sitting around either on the computer, or watching tv.  I am also looking for some basic exercises I can do at home with the weights to 'supplement' what I will be doing at the gym.  I also bought a Tai Chi DVD that shows some of the basic moves.  I have always wanted to learn Tai Chi and I hope that if the local Y has classes, that I can some day afford them and sign up.

It is really strange because I hated gym class as a kid.  I hated everything about it.  I was always the last one to be chosen for the team, and I never did anything in the class really well.  I always came in last during those mile runs, and I just didn't have the talent or the quickness for the sports like the other kids did, so I just hated it.  However now that I'm older, and taking more control over my life, I am finding that I want to incorporate more activities into my life, or hope to as I lose more weight.  I would like to eventually take up jogging, and I would like to learn some form of martial arts.  I want to get back into swimming (used to LOVE it as a kid!!) and I also have been interested in learning Tae Bo.  I want to take Yoga - not just for exercising, but to help learn how to calm and de-stress myself.  I find myself getting excited about wanting to learn how to do these things, and to actually get to doing them.  I know that it will take some time as I wouldn't be able to do them at my current weight/size - at least not comfortably.

  • c)  *Eating Well & Appropriately*
    • Do you know follow a formal meal plan or eat spontaneously throughout the days?
    • Have you been thinking about changing what you do
    • Take a moment to write down, in some personal place, just what you do, why and what you would like to change over the next 6 weeks?
    • If you eat a specific way for personal, religious or health reasons and won't be changing a thing, that's ok!  We all have to do what works for us!  The point is to figure out what you do and why!  Then let's keep doing it as long as it works for us in our lives :)  Everyone adjusts what they do when something quits working!  Including Weighing ourselves :)

As for eating regimens or plans, we do tend to have dinner around the same time every evening, although I would like to try more recipes that I have found from different dieting cookbooks and websites.  I find it harder to incorporate fresh veggies and fruits into my diet during the winter because I am on a limited income and they tend to cost more during the off-season, so I am hoping to do more soups and slow-cooker recipes during the colder winter months.  Being pagan, I tend to follow the seasons anyways, so incorporating seasonal foods into my diet plans is almost a 'spiritual' thing for me.  (I know that may sound corny - other pagans may understand what I am getting at here.)  I am finding it MUCH easier to get in all my water for the day, and in fact there are days I am getting more than the 8 8-oz servings of water in, so I am feeling extra good about myself then!  I read an article in a magazine a few days ago that gave even more benefits for drinking water, based on some findings from some recent studies.  Not only does it help you to feel more full, the studies have shown that 1) we automatically want 15% fewer calories when we have water with our meals,  2) it gives your metabolism a boost of up to 30% for 30 minutes after drinking 2 cups of water (so if you drink 2 cups of water every 30 minutes you could burn 30% more calories for all your waking hours!!)  3) it "filters" excess calories if you are drinking enough as it helps the food to flow through your intestines quicker which helps to reduce the amount of calories that can be absorbed,  4) for women, it helps us to break down more carbs  and 5) helps everyone break down more fat by ensuring the cells have the proper amount of fluids to function.  The article was in the October 10, 2006 issue of Woman's World magazine.  The article also goes into greater detail about how water helps these 5 things, as well as helping to alleviate health issues like Chronic Fatigue, kidney stones and arthritis/body aches (including back pain).  It was a very interesting article and only made me more resolved to drinking all my water - and more! - each day!!

  • d) Strive to *Be Happy*
    • Enjoy!
    • Do you have any other *Health* Related Goals
    • Life Goals?
    • Happy Making Goals?
    • Now's the time to just take a minute someplace quiet and get your goals recorded somewhere :)

I've been doing that as I go along - working on my goals, what I would like to do, how I'd like to do them, and so on.  It's been fun making plans.  And it's been great getting control back into my own hands instead of my life being controlled by everyone - and everything - else.  I like getting control over my food and my weight instead of them controlling me.

  • e) Our *Daily Goals* [edited for clarity]
