Using Dumb Bells and not sure how to go about it...

Quote  |  Reply

I just got two dumb bells to do some workouts with my arms to go along with the Elliptical and well my left arm is substantially weaker than my right.  Should I do my left more than my right to catch up on that side?

Or should I just do equal reps on both and it'll even out eventually?  Any disadvantage to either?

Thank

Better to work them evenly, do as many reps as you can with your weak arm, then do the same amount of reps with your strong arm.

I'm doing the exact same thing raiken, and my left arm is a lot weaker than my right as well. I have been doing equal reps and weight for both arms, and while it's been a lot harder with my left, it's slowly getting better.

Just keep at it and they'll even out.

thanks for the replies

When I started swimming, my left arm was weaker than my right and I kept going skew in the lane. It evened out by itself in a few weeks, and I'm not sure I could have handled the extra pressure if I had to exercise it more than the right to catch up. I'd think don't strain yourself when you start out.

But while we're on the subject of dumbells, does anyone have a link to some instructions for how to get started using them? I've heard free weights are much more effective than circuits, but I'm worried about injuring myself if I use incorrect posture or do bad exercises. I'm a total beginner and a slow learner so need lots of detailTongue out.

Hey malaika, Stumptous.com has a great guide to proper form and tons of great info.

This page I've linked below is an example of a  dumbell workout routine, and each included exercise has a link to a set of demonstration pictures or video.

Thank you! That is pretty much EXACTLY what I was looking for...
