UTI and weight gain?
Okay I know this is a weird subject..but I have an urinary tract infection and since gained 2 pounds in 2 days. I did also bump up my calories..so I am wondering could the UTI make me retain water or it is my actual calorie intake? I know that 2 pounds could easily be water weight but I was losing well and now the gain with the intake increase...I had so much more energy adding in more calories and if I have to I will bump it back down before I do anymore damage..I have worked TOO hard to lose. Thanks so much for your input!
Also any suggestions on clearing this up..I know cranberry juice is one way and lots of water. :0)
Thank you gi-jane. I will be sure to check into it.
What a weird coincidence--I went through this a couple of days ago and had the exact same question run through my mind. I counted cranberry juice in my calorie intake, exercised as normal, and still gained. I was a little put off, but I'm sure it's just water weight with all of the juice and H2O intake. Go get the UTI checked out! But for now, you can get an OTC pill called Uristat to help with the pain/frequent trips to the bathroom.
UGGHH..Thank you so much leahttran...it really is so painful and annoying at the same time. I felt like the question was ridiculous but obviously there are people out there just like me :0). I scheduled a doc appt for later..thanks again for all the help! Hope your feeling better!
If it's just cystitis it should clear up in two days, and you can help yourself feel better (and get better more quickly) by doing a number of things: drinking lots and lots of water, taking cranberry tablets or drinking 100% pure unsweetened cranberry juice, drinking apple cider vinegar, and taking an over-the-counter pill called Cystex that will help with symptoms and also contains an antimicrobial agent to help stop the infection from spreading, and/or try those sachets mentioned above.
If it doesn't clear up in 2 days, it's likely you need medical attention. As GI-Jane said, if you get other symptoms such as blood in the urine, if your discomfort suddenly gets a lot worse to the point of being unbearable, you really should call your doctor ASAP and get tested for a UTI. If it's a straightforward bacterial UTI you'll probably be prescribed antibiotics which should help you to get significantly better within 24 hours.
I lost weight during the worst UTI bout I ever had. That being said, I had a kidney infection and was throwing up any time I tried to eat anything, so that is... probably why. It also led on to food poisoning. Liquid diet for weeks = NOT FUN .__.
I would stick with the cranberries and water, they help me whenever I get cystitis flare-ups. :[ That two lbs is likely just water, though, so don't fret. :] I hope you feel better soon.
I used to get UTIs often - to prevent them I take cranberry pills regularly and drink tons of water. If you feel one coming on, up the water and eliminate carbonated beverages - they seem to cause further irritation. Also, I read about taking apple cider vinegar from a natural healing site. Apparently, the acidity of cranberry juice is what prevents the bacteria from adhering to the lining of the ureter so it makes sense that vinegar would work as well. I make a cup of hot apple cinnamon tea and add honey and 1T apple cider vinegar. It is very strong, especially if you don't like vinegar, but much less unpleasant than a UTI.
If your symptoms last more than 2-3 days, go to a doctor!
As for the weight gain - I have not noticed any - although I'm usually in too much pain to worry about my weight.
Thank you all for all of your help and suggestions. On top of being in pain and bloated and miserable. I have NO desire to workout..and I have been eating poorly. I hope it is just because I do not feel well..but I am not liking it at all and I am lacking all motivation to turn it around. A friend of mine also told me about the cranberry pills..I will have to look for them. Yesterday I was adding light cranberry juice to my water and I had dried cranberries in my salad. The pain is getting less but still annoyingly there. I guess, had an appt yesterday but cancelled because it started to lighten up a little. I am going to have to go see the doc..no health insurance though so I am kind of putting that off. Thanks again!
Okay sucked it up and went to the doctor today and got some antibiotics..thanks for the nudge gi-jane. I hate to take medicine really if my body can heal itself..it wasn't really a true money issue..obviously my health comes before that. Thank you all for your replys and concern. I hope I start feeling better soon this has really thrown me off course with exercise and cc-ing. Thanks again!
