UUGH! Anyone else have problems not overeating before and during TOM?

Quote  |  Reply

It is my TOM next week or so and I always seem so hungry or at least want to eat more than usual.  Does anyone else have this problem?  If so how do you try to overcome this?  I ate more than I planned today, but still have a deficit for the day, so I guess it is not so bad.

Yes, I have that problem, too! I buy a bar of dark (75% or so) chocolate and break off a couple of little pieces each day, letting them melt slowly in my mouth. That helps keep the chocolate cravings at bay, anyway, and is certainly better for me than devouring whole bars of milk chocolate! I'm also a bit of a tea junkie, so I make myself a lot of tea to sip throughout the day. Hot tea and hot baths seem to help my cramps. That might be because the caffeine in the non-herbal teas helps the painkillers work, I don't know. Also, just having a hot, fragrant cup of tea to savor can be pretty satisfying for me.

Thanks! I like your ideas about the tea and the chocolate.  I think I will try this tomorrow.

I don't have specific cravings, just my body telling me SNACK MINDLESSLY.

So I do.

I buy a ton of salad, just useless super-low-cal salad mix, and put like 50 calories worth of dressing on, and I'm set to munch for like 2 hours.

I join the group too. I get very hungry for 2 consecutive days before my TOM. I usually don't eat sugar, and those days is what I crave a lot.  Sometimes I forget that I'm really close to my TOM and the unsual hunger is the one that reminds me that happy days are coming (pain, bloating, moody etc...)

Glad to know that I am not alone.

I know it is really aggravating, especially if you eat sensibly the rest of the month.  I also find that I show a gain, even if I know I have not eaten enough to gain.  It takes a few days after for my weight to get back to normal.

Every month I get so annoyed, b/c I'll lose several pounds, then bam four day before my period I gain like 3 and "hold on to it" till my period starts.  So annoying.

I do this too--I retain more water before and during my period.

As for cravings, if they're too bad I usually eat my maintenance calorie amount instead of creating a deficit. It doesn't slow me down too much, and it's nice to tae a break every once in a while.

YES!

I have a VERY hard time not eating everything in sight for a few days before, and the few days during TOM.

I try to find good things, but sometimes you just need some sweets.

I'm terrible with my TOM.. TERRIBLE... I usually end up making cookies and eating half the batch, but if I keep my hands busy I "forget" my cravings.

Yep - and I think about it and decide what exactly it is that I'm craving...and I eat it.  I only allow myself to do this on one day.  Last time it was Spaghetti - I'm Italian and I love pasta.  So I made it and I ate it.  Next day I got back on plan - and since I satisfied my most heart-felt craving...I didn't have anymore.  That works the best for me.  :-)  Hope you find your perfect solution.

Tammymc,  maybe I will try that.  I would love to have some Pad Thai!

I typically lose my appetite before and during my TOM but right afterward I want to eat more than I should. I guess my body wants to catch up after the TOM or something, like after going into starvation mode, but I don't feel like I'm depriving myself during this, I just naturally feel less interested in food. I wonder if there's anyone else out there like me?

My PMS: Sugar craving and grumpiness...... awesome!

I don't seem to be capable doing anything with the sugar situation but dig in some ice cream and eat it all.... if it's in the house, contains large amount of sugar I WILL eat it and try to stop me! The day TOM (what it stands for anyway.... English is not my first language) comes it is all gone and I have no mood to eat.

Well that was not constructive...... mother nature is wining in my case. But I wonder why. Does any one have scientific explanation for body demanding sugar particularly right before period? I'm all over that one and then I can attack the problem scientifically.....

Kacka, TOM means that Time Of the Month.

And I have sugar cravings too! And normally I don't eat sugary things. I thinkthat our bodies are working more than usual so our bodies aks us for more, our bodies are preparing themselves to have babies :-). That's how I have to justify my hunger. I don't listen to it, but wow!!! I suffer a lot trying to avoid it.

Thank you bolio...... the time is aproaching fast for me and I think I will try to fool the craving with No sugar added Ice Cream and see if it goes for it..... haha

Heyy kacka if you search the forums, I think you will find what people are doing to fool the sugar cravings, you can get more ideas if you think that's messing with your diet.  I'm a salty person and wow those potato chip, peanuts, the bread ohhhhhhhhh my, just kill me. Until.... through this forum I found that some or a lot of ladies are eating WASA crakers, 35 cal each one. That finding is a blessing for me. Maybe you can find your gold substitute for sugar for that TOM. :-)
