going vegan and fieldtrip

Quote  |  Reply

hey there,

im thinking about becoming a vegan, ive been an ovo lacto veggie for 14 years ish now, so its not a huge change, but quite a significant one

i keep trying to ditch cheese and failing, but the more i read about dairy producing cows the more i want to give up.

with this in mind, im away on a field trip this weekend, so ill be eating out, for lunch and dinner both days. what can you buy easily thats vegan friendly?

i mean normally id go for a cheese sandwich, or if i was feeling a bit lacto sick id get egg mayo, but both of those are out,

Any ideas?

Hi there! I think many of us veg*ns have been in the same place at some point too. Good luck with your choice, and this is a good place to start and get some good ideas. :o)

What kind of places will you be grabbing lunch/dinner at?

If you know ahead of time, you can look up the menu online or call, so you can walk right in with no worries and have an idea of what you'd like to order. I'm very big on calling and asking ahead of time, so I don't have look like I'm being difficult or making a scene in front of others. In my opinion, at least for me, being vegan is easy as long as you do the research before hand and know what to ask. As much as I don't want to promote being dishonest, if you say you have an allergy to eggs and dairy, they will take more care into looking at the ingredients for you. It also might be a good idea to bring along a Luna bar or some sort of portable snack, in case there really isn't a good selection for you to fill you up.

Even with the following, I'd ask about the ingredients and make sure they understand you mean no butter or mayo on the bread, etc or chicken stock in the soup...Most places can easily make a salad or grilled veggie wrap of some sort...Pizza with vegetables and no cheese (as long as the crust is vegan friendly)...Veggie stir fries over rice...Egg free pasta with marinara sauce...Some places even have a veggie menu.

Good luck :o)

thanks,

i have no idea where ill be for much of it, but as its only for a few days i think ill probably be able to pack some food. when i was in iceland last year i couldnt get anything veggie and lactose free, so i took some big bags of nuts and banana chips.

annoying as ill have to carry them round with me all day, but hey! it'll be good for me lol

I read on PETA.org that 7-11 is going to start offering vegan sandwiches! Yay!

I know how it is to carry food around- I'm a gluten free vegan and I have food on me at. all. times. I'm not kidding- I carry a messenger bag for that specific reason. I found sliced tofu at Whole Foods that is really delicious- it's deli style and great for sandwiches. Plus the sandwiches don't need to be refrigerated. Good luck and have fun!

Hooray, hooray for you thinking of going vegan! Eating out can be fairly easy depending on where you live and if you get to pick the places where you'll be eating. All the other suggestions made here are great, so look for those. If you like mushrooms, my suggestion is look for portobella sandwiches. You see them quite often, even here in our small Southern rural area. They're heavenly! Mmmm! There's also baked potatoes, just make sure they don't put butter, bacon, sour cream, or cheese on it. It's wonderful just by itself with a little pepper. I also order baked sweet potatoes when I can. They're so good and good for you.

They've come a LONG way in offering vegan fare at restaurants, even though they have a long way to go. However look at how it used to be just for vegetarians. You never saw vegetarian dishes offered at restaurants and now you do all the time. They even sell packaged vegetarian foods in grocery stores, even some vegan. Of course lots of them have too many preservatives and other bad for you things, but things are looking up all around.

Hope this helps.
