Vegan Low cal snacks
So I'm a new vegetarian and I'm looking into becoming a Vegan. I have some questions:
are luna bars vegan?
Is Spiri-Tein(Idk if i spelt that right) protien powder vegan?
and also, what are some low cal snacks? I know nuts are so high in calories. I also worked in a health food store and noticed all the vegan chocolate, snacks, and cookies are so high in calories :( I just do not want to be limited to fruits and vegetables all the time.
yes luna bars are vegan. i was vegan for 6 weeks (but also gluten free) so i was stuck with fruit and some baked goods, i dont like processed stuff so no soy snacks for me either. found it very restricted and no good for my exercise level. also, i ended up high carb high sugar.yieks.
low cal snack i d say veggies to avoid too much sugar. rebar? seeds are good too. homemade granola (bars). oat cakes.
Yes, Luna bars are vegan. Spiru-tein powder contains bee pollen. Have you ever tried hemp protein? I like Living Harvest. It's delicious and doesn't contain any artificial ingredients. You may also find hemp seeds in the bulk section of your health food store.
For some low calorie snacks, try making your own roasted chickpeas, potato chips and kale chips (see Fatfree Vegan Kitchen). Other ideas off the top of my head: butternut squash or sweet potato fries, sliced vegetables with hummus, popcorn (with spices and/or nutritional yeast), apple sauce, and fruit kanten (like jello, only much better). If you let me know what sort of foods you prefer, I'm sure I can think of many more.
I used to think that a vegan diet was restrictive until I started reading vegan cooking blogs. I highly recommend looking at recipes online for inspiration-- you definitely need not be limited to plain fruits and vegetables all the time! Feel free to ask me for blog and cookbook recommendations or any other information you might want.
I'll have to try to hemp protein! I just recently started to eat chickpeas, i love them! I never roasted them before, ill have to do that... and the kale chips sound interesting! I love anything with nuts and I enjoy most vegetables, right now I'm really into trying anything new! Just anything that does not require a lot of oil
Thanks for the advice! Ive been looking online for recipes and stuff.
kale chips, cool. i m gone steel some ideas here. thanks ;-)
You are very welcome! Another snack idea that you might try is a homemade granola bar or energy bar, such as this or this. You can adjust the ingredients according to your tastes and nutritional needs using the recipe analyzer on this site. Making your own bars is so much cheaper than buying them, and you can be as creative as you like. I make variations of these all the time to have on hand when I need a quick, portable snack.
I love chickpeas, too. You must try these Chickpea Cutlets.
Best Vegan book you'll ever buy-How it All Vegan
My friends who are Vegan swear by it and I've eaten the stuff that comes out of the book(I am not vegan) and it is so amazing. There are great snack ideas in that book.
LaraBars are amazing!! and if you find them too expensive try making them yourself. my best friend and I make a homemade version for wayyyy cheaper and they are just as yummy :-)
I love Luna Bars too :)
Also, I do not know if ALL flavors of Spiru-tein are vegan, but some definitely are. Just be sure to read the labels before you buy. The one I have now, Cherries Jubilee, is vegan and it makes for delicious low-cal shakes w/ some soy milk.
Another blog recommendation for you, my recent fav:
www.veganlunchbox.blogspot.com
SUCH cute snack ideas, for lunches or otherwise. She is really health conscious too, so they're all mostly low-cal and great for you! She has an adorable book out too, also called Vegan Lunch Box. Flip through it to get some ideas next time you're at the book store!
Best of luck, yay for vegans! ![]()
Thanks again everyone!! Those chickpea cutlets sound so good! and I really like that homemade lara bar idea!
Do any of you actually eat the grocery store vegan snacks though? I know my health food store carried Liz Lovely cookies and they were like 200 calories for 1/4 of the cookie lol. I do not always have time to cook, but this weekend I'm definitely going to try making some of those ideas you guys posted! But are there any low calorie snacks i can just buy, besides the lara/luna/cliff type bars and veggies?
I've had the whole foods vegan muffin and it's amazing, I don't know the calorie count, but it is super moist and filling. My vegan friend made a big pot of vegan mac and cheese, I can get you the recipe if you like. That way you can make a big pot of it and just store it in your frig so you always have a meal to go.
Soycrisps!
i would love the recipe!! I love mac and cheese!!
