Veganism = Exhaustion...Help!

I'm 2 weeks new to the Vegan lifestyle and I honestly have never felt worse in my life. I sleep 10 hours a night (used to be fine on 6) have worked out consistently for 10 years now doing at least an hours of rigorous cardio daily paired with weight training pilates and zumba. I eat a VERY varied diet take a multivitamin, calcium and vitamin D supplement and a B12 supplement daily, get PLENTY of greens and legumes. Try to stay away from fake/processed meats but have them on occasion. I feel listless and dazed have a constant headache and feel like even the smallest activity (not to mention it's rediculously hard for me to work out anymore, which isn't good) makes me feel as though I may pass out. If anyone has any advice as to what I should do I would really appreciate it!

Are you getting enough dietary fat? That helps your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins. 

Seems like you are running low on carbohydrates... Also +1 talk to a doctor.

Can you post exactly what you are eating?

Breakfast - Either a Kids Cliff Bar 130cal 3 g fat 4g protein and an apple

Lunch - Large Fresh spinach salad with low fat sesame dressing, 40 peanuts (160) cal and tomatoes and onion

Veggie/meatwrap on whole wheat tortilla/ /1/2 cup fresh veggies along with 1/2 cup fresh spinach and 1/3 cup lightlife veggie meat

Snack - Whole Wheat english Muffin with 1tbs natural no salt organic PB

            OR Ezekiel cereal with 1/2 cup light soymilk

Dinner - Similar salad as to lunch but probably with almonds instead

             1 cup whole wheat pasta with legumes of some sort, I usually try to mix it up black/navy/kidney/edamame ect. And tofu if I'm in the mood

dessert - 1 cup grapes or kids cliff bar if I'm still hungry (120 cal)

First let me be upfront with my biased... haveing been vegan in the past I do not recommend this diet long-term.  However, short-term it can be useful in cleansing the body.

You might be experiencing cleansing reaction. Shifting to a vegan diet can cause a cleansing cycle (which is good). 

Long-term (and it is only my opinion) I believe the vegan diet will lead to problems for most people do to the high carbs, high omega 6 fats, low omega 3 fats, low in ready-made fat soluble vitamins only found in animal fats... and a host of other reasons.

 

I think you're simply not eating enough.  Vegan/vegetarian food is naturally very low in calories and you have to plan your intake extremely carefully if you want to make sure you're getting the right amount for your age, size and activity level.  If you do at least an hour a day of exercise you qualify as 'very active'.  People who are very athletic and muscular will always be at the upper end of the BMI scale.  You're not overweight at the moment and your goal may be too low for your physique.

I calculate that you need about 2600 cals a day to maintain your weight and therefore suggest that you go no lower than 2000 cals a day if you're trying to lose weight.  What intake have you been working with?

Supplements are useful but they are no match for real food when it comes to nutrition.  Iron deficiency is something that vegetarians and vegans have to be especially vigilant about. 

If you carry on feeling unwell then do go and talk to your doctor straight away.  It could be pure coincidence that your illness has started at the same time as changing your diet or it could be that it's connected.

my veganism has made me feel the opposite! when i first went vegan and since i have had more energy and felt better than i ever did as an omnivore. hope you find something that works for you!

I think the first six months of being vegan and/or vegetarian are hard-period. I don't know the science behind it, but I think it's just your body adjusting.


I have been a lacto-ovo veg for 6 years, but I do eat vegan 2-3 months of the year. When I first became vegetarian, I was always tired and lost a lot of muscle mass/weight. Then my body just seemed to adjust. I eat a really good diet, so I'm sure that helps.


I would just wait it out and take care of yourself in the meantime (which it sounds like you are already doing).
