non-vegetarian.... JUICE??? wtf?

The following was confirmed in writing, except for Minute Maid, which was confirmed on the phone by their Customer Service Department
Update on Orange Juice and Other Juice Products
Tropicana Healthy Heart Orange Juice now contains fish gelatin and omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.
The vitamin D in the following juices is derived from lanolin from sheep's wool:
* Tropicana Orange Juice with Calcium and Vitamin D
* Tropicana Orange Juice with Lots of Pulp, Calcium, and Vitamin D
* Minute Maid Orange Juice with Calcium and Vitamin D
* Minute Maid Orange Juice with Multi-vitamins
* Florida Naturals Orange Juice Plus Calcium with Added Vitamin D
* Florida Naturals Home Squeezed Style Orange Juice Plus Calcium with Added Vitamin D
The following juices or juice products contain carmine (also called cochineal), a food coloring derived from the dried bodies of female beetles:
* Tropicana Sweet Grapefruit Juice (refrigerated)
* Tropicana Tropical Tangerine Fruit Squeeze
* Tropicana Ruby Red Grapefruit 100% Juice (non-refrigerated); however, the Tropicana Ruby Red Grapefruit found with the refrigerated juices does not contain cochineal or carmine
* Tropicana Fruit Punch (non-refrigerated)
* Tropicana Strawberry Orange Juice (non-refrigerated)
* Tropicana Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice Beverage (non-refrigerated)
* Tropicana Strawberry Banana Fruit Smoothie ...._,___
According to Snopes.com (my favorite reference for urban legends) the bugjuice is true.
And as far as the Vitamin D goes, here is an article from Vegetarian Journal That states that Tropicana's juice comes from a purely synthetic Vitamin D whilst Florida Grower's comes from a base of lanolin (sheep) and is concocted synthetically from there.
Anyway you look at it, it's not vegetarian. It's eeeeewwwwy! I think I'll stick with good old sunshine and an orange ;)
Ick! I don't really drink juice but that's good to know.
Nice.
I feel better about not drinking juice now.

Is minute maid vegetarian or not? I have juice boxes that I love >_<
skinnyogi,
It is only the OJ labeled as 'Tropicana Heart Healthy Orange Juice' which contains the fishy stuff, which is obviously not vegetarian.
If you've got some minute maid that says its fortified with 'D', the vitamin D contains lanolin derived from sheeps wool, which would be vegetarian, but not vegan. Vegetarians often consume animal products such as milk, and might wear wool, wheras vegans do not use animal products at all.
If you are vegan, you can still drink juice. Just stay away from the stuff that is fortified with vitamin D. I would highly recommend the 'Just Pikt' organic orange juice, which is frozen fresh, and not from concentrate. This stuff has vibrant flavor that will really knock your socks off. Its tastes way fresher and better than any orange juice I've ever had. I don't actually drink cups of juice (although my husband does), however, I use small amounts in smoothies, and it is pretty incredible stuff.
It's what I had in the fridge - I guess I got lucky. Btw products sold in Canada are often somewhat different from those sold in the US with the same name (I'm in Canada).
That's why I bought a juicer...
No need to worry about what is not juice in my juice.
Thanks for the post, though.....
Sometimes I think there's a meat based conspiracy in our country...let's face it....unless you wear hand made patchwork clothes and sport dreadlocks down to your ass, people are SHOCKED that you are a vegitarian, and then the questions start.
This Thanksgiving, I had to explain to my grandmother, again, that I really don't eat turkey, and, no, I don't eat gravy either....and we had to run out to get vegitarian dressing (stuffing) from the sotre because there was turkey in everything.
*sigh* There goes my OJ. I usually don't drink it unless I feel crappy. It's my comfort food. Last month I learned that lowfat yogurt has gelatin, even kosher brands can have a gelatin in them-can't remember how they get around it....
It's always something new....thanks for the post though...because that is just NASTY.
