I don't know the brand at the moment, but I'm tempted to get veggie turkey slices. However, I am also very skeptical, and am afraid it will taste horrid.
Does anyone have a recommendation for not-meat slices?

is it like tofurkey? i've tried some at my school before and it's okay just don't expect it to taste like turkey. I've never tried seitan but I know they have it for sandwiches there (i work in the food court). I prefer hummus on wheat bread with tons of veggies. My school also offers "veggie spread" which is basically cream cheese with some veggies in it, that's good too - and i discovered towards the end of last semester that hummus + veggie spread + veggies = yummy.
yeah, i think there's really enough good veggie options that aren't fake meat that i don't typically use fake meat except like boca patties cause they're easy and fast. the lunch "meat" usually tastes... i dunno, i guess real lunchmeat tastes kinda like cardboard too.... hm, it may be a better substitute than i thought :)
I tried the LightLife Tofurkey and it was awful! It had a green tinge and was kind of tough. We're not going to be eating them again. I'm with everyone else on the alternatives though. I got them for my daughter who thought that the fake turkey would be 'Subway Sandwich' like and it was a big disappointment.
i like the tofurky peppered slices...they seem to be the most flavorful
yves brand are ok.
smart deli are my least favorite.
they are all high in protien but taste not that good if you are eating them alone. i say put veggies in the sandwhich too and some veganaise to disguise the flavor haha, although tofurky brand to me, doesn't really need that.

The fake lunch meat scares me. It always looks green or some other strange color. I, too, just like making a veggie sandwich with some hummus and vegan cheese. It's pretty much the jam.
There are so many brands and types of meat subsitutes that are very tasty. They also have no cholesterol and many have no saturated fat. I have been a vegetarian for many many years and it is a healthy and exciting lifestlye. Since my boyfriend gave up meat he has become much more experiemental and diverse in what he eats. Its is great. We have fun trying new foods.
as for meatless-meat I like Tofurky brand slices, I put them on a sandwich with lettuce, tomato and mustard (sometimes with soy cheese!!) It has a great flavor and texture. I also enjoy morningstar farms chick'n nuggets and smartdogs hot dogs. If I were you I would sample some different types of veggie-meat and see what you like. It may be weird at first but I assure you you can become quite used to it, heck I even found vegetarian beef jerky!! Look around at your local grocery store or food co-op for fun meatless options.
good luck!

I don't use a lot of the fake meats, but when I do I trust the Yves line (doesn't that sound just like a commercial).
The veggie ground round is very good, and the pepperoni I use on pizza is great.
I don't make the fake lunch meat sandwitches, but my brother uses them and likes them a lot.
Really the think to remember is that they won't taste exactly like meat, and they are not going to have the same texture.
I usually suggest look for the flavour, but expect a different texture than meat.
For example the pepperoni has the spice of pepperoni, but it's thicker and a little firmer than meat pepperoni.

QOURN SLICES!!! best fake meat there is, and tastes just liek the real thing according to my frineds!!! i lvoe the turkey and cranberry slcies yum.....
i heard that stuff is made from fungus
Watch out because all that fake meat is loaded with high sodium
Vegan Bologna is the best! If you liked bologna ever as a kid, this is even better. Low fat and no meat or dairy. I think it is the Yves brand that is the best. I have not tried the turkey, but the bologna is so good I would be willing.
FWIW, nayonaise or veganaise taste excellent and have about 35 cal and 3 grams fat..... and NO cholesterol.

Thanks for all the suggestions - even though I'm in a green-minded, hippie-ful town, I've not even seen some of these. I'll look harder!
I love all the easily available and variety of "fake" meat. Yes the Yves brand is pretty good. Whole Foods has several varieties and types. It is a nice and easy way to bring in variety. Go for it!
I'm with Kelkee on the Tofurkey slices, and I even make the same exact sandwiches (but sometimes with red onions too)!
Tofurkey Hickory Smoked, Oven Roasted, and Cranberry + Stuffing are my favorites. I've tried other brands, and they just weren't that great. Another protein substitute aside from spreads and such listed, is falafel. I put it in a pita with (I know this sounds strange, but it's so good...) fresh made pico de gallo salsa, and spinach. I know falafel can be fatty and salty, but you can also make it yourself and just bake it, regulating the fat and sodium.
