Veggie burgers - the good, the bad
Im new to it and fell hard for morningstar black bean burger.
I was highly disappointed in gardenburger's portabello burger, which surprised me cause Im a mushroom-aholic.
Now Im wondering if its a brand thing or a style. I realize taste is unique to the individual but would like opinions on this.
i like em all
gardenburger original &the normal boca is good!
I like Morningstar's "Grillers" and Boca's "all american flame-grilled" burgers.
When I make them (I usually do), this is my new favorite:
have you ever tried "smart deli" or something like that? its in the tofu section, and they make good meatless "hot dogs" that are 45 calories each!
Are there any easy high-protein ones you can make yourself that you've tried?
Boca burgers are okay, but I don't prefer them over anything else.
You really have to try them and see- I don't like any of the ones that say "grilled" or "grill- flavor", but I think some people do. They really aren't that hard to make- I know Cook's Illustrated had a decent recipe, but I don't know it off the top of my head.
I actually like the "Chicken" patties better than the "burgers"
Opps- I should post that- proabably copyrighted- any how its from July 2005

If you expect the goodness you get with a real burger - than all of the veggie burgers fall way short. Instead of looking for one that taste good - do what I did - lower your expectations. They are all mushy and strange tasting.
They aren't supposed to taste like a "real" burger. That's why they're called things like black bean burgers, veggie burgers, mushroom burgers, etc.
That being said, to the OP... when I eat veggie burgers I like Amy's Bistro burgers. It's made with brown rice, pinto beans, veggies, and a hint of BBQ sauce.
You'll only have to lower your expectations if you expect it to taste like a quarte-pound of beef. "Veggie burgers" and "Soy burgers" are not the same as meat burgers. A burger is referring to the shape and cooking method; not nessessarily the ingredients; just like turkey or chicken burgers are not the same as beef burgers either.
And they are not all mushy either. In fact, very few that I've tried have been mushy at all; except a homemade one I attempted, xD
