Veggie burgers or Turkey Burgers?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm moderately changing my food lifestyle and I'm in the beginning stages of learning what's healthy and what isn't. I love turkey burgers and from time to time when I'm craving a burger I prefer turkey over beef. I heard they are less in calories and healthier than beef burgers. But I see the veggie burgers in the supermarkets and was wondering if they were the healthier choice. I've never had one before but my father said they are pretty good. So I was just wondering which is the better choice Veggie, Turkey or are they both equally healthy?

Turkey is a lean, healthy meat.  Vegetables are also healthy.  Ready-made burgers you can buy in a supermarket can have a lot of added extras (salt, colours, flavourings) so read the nutrition information and the the ingredients list to know what you're getting.   If you were to make your own simple turkey burgers or vegetable burgers with fresh ingredients they'd be very healthy

I like bison (buffulo) burgers.

hey this veggi burgur looks great, thanks for posting it gi jane

Veggie burgers are healthy if you make them yourself. Most of what you get at the supermarket is processed junk. Full of preservatives, salt and other chemicals. Boca Burgers are OK but they do contain a lot of junk. Beef and turkey are both healthy. What you put on the burger makes a big difference. If you use a whole grain bun and top with veggies and a healthy condiment they are good for you. If you put a bunch of junk on them, mayo, ketchup and so on not so healthy. Also depends on the type of meat. Look for lean burger.

Venison is a good alternative to beef and turkey. Very good for you.

I second GI Jane.  I think any frozen, boxed burger whether it be made of turkey or veggies is going to be second to any homemade burger, as they're usually infused with tons of salt and preservatives.  I've made really amazing turkey and veggie burgers at home and don't feel that one was nutritionally better than the other.  Even homemade beef burgers, since you can control how big they are and what you're putting in them, aren't that bad...beef can be very nutritious as a source of vitamins and nutrients.

My favorite turkey burger is these spicy southwest turkey burgers: http://caloriecount.about.com/spicy-southwest -turkey-burgers-recipe-r161198

And my favorite veggie burgers are these middle eastern bean burgers:

I don't like veggie burgers...I've tried them a lot over the years but I haven't found a good one. I love turkey burgers. My favorite quick lunch is a  turkey burger (no bun), cottage cheese, and BBQ sauce. Sometimes I have a pickle or a tomato.

Depends. Some veggie burgers have a load of cheese mixed in with the vegetables; not so healthy at all.

I'd recommend Quorn burgers. There are loads of different types, and Quorn's pretty low in calories and high in protein, without having all the horrible fat and cholesterol meat contains.

I figure that it would be better to make homemade burgers than buying them. The fact that you have control of what you eat when it comes to burgers as oppose to fast food burgers is very empowering. My father has always made the turkey burgers from scratch but we have never tasted veggie burgers. I believe I'll try the recipes on here and look for others and I'll try to mix it up between using a bun and lettuce. I've viewed the nutritional fact on most of those boxes and GI Jane is right about it having a lot of junk in them. I also have to watch out for too much sodium because too much intake is a huge issue towards my migraines.

Turkey burgers are great. Use the ground turkey breast instead of the other ground turkey. It is a bit bland but when used in recipes with spices and herbs, its a winner.

I prefer to make my own, but when I buy ready-made, I adore Morningstar's spicy black bean burgers. Mmm...
