VHS - Would you buy them?

Quote  |  Reply

I gathered 191 VHS movies plus 70 Disney movies and will drag them to my sister-in-law's garage sale this weekend in hopes of selling some... but honestly, do you think I have a chance? :(    I called Half Price Books but they only give you 5-10 cents for them!

it's worth a try, you never know!  Some of the older movies are hard to find on DVD anyway, so you may have some luck selling them!

I saw an add for a device that will take your old VHS and turn burn them onto a DVD...it was about $200. Someone who has one of those may buy them :)

Edited to add link.

i'd check out e-bay and see if you can get more for the disney ones, some people collect that kind of stuff!

Yea, I have at least 15 of the double taped older classics (Cleopatra, Show Boat, Ben Hur, etc) plus lots of Alfred Hitchcock, Stars Wars, Superman.. plus normal movies from the 80s - now and lots of kid stuff.

I was thinking $1 for all tapes and maybe $2 for Disney and see how it goes.. or do you think $1 for Disney and 2 for $1 on the others?

Oh no, don't tell.. you're going to make me want the machine and burn them all!  I spent a fortune collecting them and I hate to get rid of them... but my son no longer watches them... and I could use the money..  I'm really torn.

Would I buy them?  Depends on if you're selling a hard to find movie that isn't offered on DVD, BlueRay, or hasn't been already digitally downloaded to the internet.  In short, chances are slim.

The Disney movies will probably move easier - some may be considered collector's items depending on the packaging.

I know, I've always said I would try ebay or craigslist but I don't.  For one thing my home computer is has been dead for a month and so I can't monitor ebay on my work computer. Being on cc all day is bad enough! ha

Part of me wishes I could keep them but pretty soon they won't even sell VCR's!

Thanks!  That gives me some hope.. the packages are all mint - they've been well taken care of.  I just need to dust them off! ha

My fiance still buys VHS.. I ordered a VHS set of Power 90 a few years ago, and don't you know.. The VHS was more than the DVD. But I didn't want the DVD because sometimes you can mess them up quicker than a VHS. I ended up spending 10 dollars more, when I could have paid 10 dollars less and got the DVD's.. SO yeah! I would buy them, because people have a DVD and VHS player combo.

Half Price Books are going to give you 5 to 10 cents for them, and turn around and sale them for 3 to 4 dollars. We have a pawn shop that does that. Will give you 50 cents for your VHS, and then you go back a week later.. You will see your Stuff for 3 to 4 dollars.. Isn't that a rip off. If I was you. I would try to sell them first, then if that didn't work. I would take them to a good will, and get a tax slip, and file it on my income taxes.

Not the Disney or Hitchcock movies, but the others yes if they are hard to find on DVD movies or it was just a movie I really like(d).

I currently buy 95% on my movies (dvd&vhs) at a pawn shop in town for 2$ a piece. They sale both like hot cakes there.

I have one of these.  It's really nice; but, it won't burn copy protected VHS tapes (no Disney!).  Just thought I'd mention this before anyone bought one to transfer their tapes.

However, I was able to transfer a lot of my favorites that aren't available on DVD yet.

Sorry to be a party pooper.

I sold off the rest of my VHS at a garage sale last fall for $1 each.  They went very quickly.

heck yeah i buy VHS tapes all the time. i like them.

sell them in bunches at $5 for 10 or something; that will save you taking home the dregs.

i'm sure someone with a cottage will buy them for rainy days, something like that.

VHS tapes were the big seller at my friend's garage sale this summer. $1 each.

OMG! my mum sold all my disney VHS videos I WANT THEM BACK!

i would seriously buy them, what ones do you have?

I know! That's why I'm so conflicted!  Do you know how long it took me and how much money I invested in that collection!?  :(  I have EVERY Disney movie - in great condition!   I'm worried that I'll regret getting rid of them or what if only 10 sell and I end up keeping the rest.. then I'll be mad because I don't have a complete collection and wind up on ebay buying them back! LOL

But, will I watch them?  By the time I'm a grandmother will my grandchildren ever get any use out of them?  I mean, records are still played!  Maybe VHS will??? Or maybe they will become the next 8 tracks?

I'm really conflicted and I have to decide by tonight!

the magnetic information stored on a VHS tape degrades over time

by the time you're a grandma, if you haven't stored them in a temperature-controled, humidity controled sealed container, you won't be able to play them, assuming you still have a VCR that works

i have a few VHS tapes that didn't sell in my yard sale 3 years ago - don't know why i don't throw them out since i no longer have a VCR

if you're in a rural area, people are more likely to buy them than if you're in a city (imo)

People will buy anything at a garage sell.

You're right nomo - I have a tendancy to keep a lot of crap. Anything that has to do with my son has sentimental value for me but I can't keep all this crap!  I know, I know.

Unfortunately, we do not live in a rural area and my sister-in-laws neighborhood is pretty upscale so I know the neighbors won't be buying them! BUT, she's going to advertise on Craigslist so other people might.. and whatever doesn't sell will be OK since I'm going to have my own garage sale in teh spring.. so I can try again...

holbee - Would you like to buy my Disney movies? :D

pg - good idea about bundling!
