VHS - Would you buy them?

Quote  |  Reply

I gathered 191 VHS movies plus 70 Disney movies and will drag them to my sister-in-law's garage sale this weekend in hopes of selling some... but honestly, do you think I have a chance? :(    I called Half Price Books but they only give you 5-10 cents for them!

Do you really think the people that go to garage sales in upscale neighborhoods, which are really popular by the way, live in upscale neighborhoods?

No, that's why I said the neighbor's won't be buying the movies but that the other people would or might.. people that see the signs or read the advertisement...

Honestly, tapes take up so much shelf space, the only way I'd really buy one at this point is if it was some ultra-obscure impossible to find movie.

As for Disney, the only way "impossible to find" would apply to them is if you happen to be looking for a copy of "Song Of The South". Otherwise, I've noticed they do this thing of making a big release for one of their films every couple of years, amid much fanfare and "only available for a short period of time!" warnings, then take them off the market for a time, then a few years later do another big release for the same film. The one I've been currently seeing billboards for is Sleeping Beauty. I know Sleeping Beauty has been available before. So even if you sell your tapes, Disney movies should be plentiful for your grandchildren to enjoy.

On a side note, does anyone else get bugged by the way Disney trailers refer to the films as "a new Disney classic" before they're even released in theaters? A "classic" means something that has withstood the test of time and is still well regarded. "Snow White" is a classic. "The Frog Prince" may well become a classic, but you can't say it already is yet.

Do I know about shelf space or what!?  I had all the Disney and cartoon movies in my son's closet.. It has one of those top shelves above the bar where you hang your clothes.. the movies ran all alone the top.. stacked to the ceiling. Then I had a huge garbage bag full in another closet and the whole entertainment center was full as well.. haha

Oh, I would love Song of the South. I still have my Uncle Remus book from when I was a little girl and I loved the Brer Bear and Brer Rabbit stories.

I never thought about Disney's new films being marketed as 'classics' right off the bat! But now I will get irritated when I see a commercial.. thanks! ha

Well, I don't know how important it is to you that your collection all be official Disney releases, but I googled "Song Of The South DVD" and found that you can obtain it "unofficially"(i.e. bootlegged). Most people remember the Brer Rabbit animated sequences or the Zippidy Doo Dah song when they think of this movie, but those are only brief vignettes. Most of the film is a live action story which paints a rose-colored view of slavery, which is why Disney is reluctant to put it out officially. It's not as bad as "Birth Of A Nation", but it does kind of whitewash what the black experience was in that era (no pun intended, but it really does work, doesn't it?).

Yea, I have to say 'Zippety Do Dah' is about all I remember as well.

You're right nomo - I have a tendancy to keep a lot of crap. Anything that has to do with my son has sentimental value for me but I can't keep all this crap!  I know, I know.

Unfortunately, we do not live in a rural area and my sister-in-laws neighborhood is pretty upscale so I know the neighbors won't be buying them! BUT, she's going to advertise on Craigslist so other people might.. and whatever doesn't sell will be OK since I'm going to have my own garage sale in teh spring.. so I can try again...

holbee - Would you like to buy my Disney movies? :D

pg - good idea about bundling!

umm well seriousy?im in australia so we'd be looking at ebay or something, in which case id ask my mum. but you'd have to be 100% certian you dont want them, take your time

aggh.. I didn't get on this weekend but I have to say - the movies sold better than I though!  I must have sold at least 70. I still have a lot more but that helped reduce!  I'll put the rest out for my next garage sale....

Anyway, I made $140!  That will help pay for Christmas!

I thought you might do OK with selling them real cheap. A lot of people still have VHS players or they have combo DVD & VHS players because they don't want to get rid off all of the VHS tapes that they've spent so much money on.

I saw an add for a device that will take your old VHS and turn burn them onto a DVD...it was about $200. Someone who has one of those may buy them :)

Edited to add link.

LOL, just what I always wanted, a digital copy of crappy VHS picture quality to cherish forever!  Just kidding, I suppose it could be good for out of print stuff...
