Vicious cycle

Quote  |  Reply

I'm afraid I've gotten into a bad cycle here. I have been working out a lot for a while now, 1-1.5 hours a day/7 days a week & I've found that I've also been eating more. Whether it's real hunger or bad habits, I can't tell anymore.  But the  thing is, the more I work out to try & correct the crazy amount of calories I've been eating, I still seem to eat like a pig. It's not a bunch of junk food or anything, but it's still more than I should be having. Now I've gained weight and it's really depressing. I want to take a break so my body can rest, but at this point, I don't feel it's an option. I know I would end up feeling really guilty. I don't know how to break the routine.

For one, I think you definitely need rest days -- going all 7 days is not good for you.  You should feel guiltier for abusing your body and not giving it a rest.

The weight gain could be from gaining muscle, try getting your body fat % checked.  Or, your body is getting such a work out that it's hanging on to weight, afraid that the famine has come.

If you can't sit still one day out of 7, at least do only yoga and stretching on the day off.  It is very restorative.

I agree that it's possible to exercise too much.  I have been there too---started to exercise to get in shape, but it just upped my appetite and I ended up gaining weight.  I would take a couple days off from working out, as hard as that might be.  Don't feel fat because you're not exercising!  Try to get in touch with your hunger when youare not exercising, see how much you need then.....

It's also possible to feel like it's OK to eat more after working out.  Don't know if this applies to you, but it's something else tothink about!

I went through this last spring....I started doing 5 miles on the elliptical each day EVERY day and in exchange allowed myself to "graze" whenever I felt like it...well when I weight myself like 2 months into this pattern I was up about 15 lbs....solution: I cut down on the exercising!

Did you just delete your old post & repost this one? You've got yourself on a fast track to exercise bulimia. Once exercise goes from a healthy function to something you are trapped into, it becomes a disorder. Check in with yourself. You might be underestimating how much you need to fuel your body, especially if you are exercising daily. Try to view exercise as something you do for your health, not weight.
