I just can't believe what I'm reading. Apparently "walking" is some sort of "exercise" and the benefits can only be activated by these special shoes from Victoria's Secret!

Ok not only is this just hilarious, it has the most infuriating tagline in the history of advertising

KILL ME NOW

Get longer,  leaner looking legs. GREAT!

WHAT!? You mean these shoes dont work?! Man I just spent 49.99 on nothing.

Surprised

Just joking!!!!

Surprised My heart fell a little bit for you there for a second

This thread makes me SO MAD!  Who do you think you are???

This is a totally crazy thread!  Any exercise anyone can do is better than nothing.  You should be ashamed of yourseves!  I actually have a pair (actually 2) MBT's and they totally work.  If you have not tired them you should keep your opinions to yourself.  And I actually also run, do yoga, pilates, the elliptical and weight lift, I have lost 40 pounds, with 10 to go and I would NEVER make fun of any person's exercise plan.  Sounds to me like it is you all that are bringing that BS smell along with you....  Sad sad sad.  Walking is an exercise, not an "exercise" and it has been proven to be as effective as running.   If at the start of your weight loss journey, all you can do is walk, start there and you can't loose, don't listen to these morons.

I don't think anyone is saying that walking isn't an exercise or that it doesn't burn calories.  However, I seriously doubt that walking in special flip-flops is more effective than walking in any other sort of footwear.  And I'd bet my last dollar that they can't make your legs longer (which they claim).

I think the quote is actually saying "longer-looking legs"...nevertheless...

If they were attractive shoes, I'd probably buy them.  $50 for a nice pair of shoes really isn't that bad.  Unfortunately for them, those shoes are hideous.  Maybe if they came out with a high-heeled version...

Does no one remember the original wooden Dr Scholl slides?  Or Earth shoes?  This is not a new thing.  As long as there are folks willing to pay, there will be other folks making claims...

Walking is great exercise -- outstanding exercise if it happens to be the only thing you can do right now.

Shoes can, and do, make a difference.  When my plantar fasciitis was in full swing, crocs were the only thing I could wear and not be in pain.  Crocs are ugly....  but comfortable.  MBTs are ugly -- but extremely effective for those with special foot needs.

No need to bash -- simply don't buy them for yourself.  And, btw -- I saw these FitFlops being sold at Bath and Body Works today -- so Victoria's Secret is really only guilty of piling on, not owning the trend.

Heya' all.  These shoes came out last year to a lot of hype.  They were flying off the shelves and selling for big bucks on eBay.

Here's a review of them that doesn't dismiss them yet it also doesn't endorse them.  It basically says they are a comfortable walking shoe that gives your legs a tiny bit more of a workout then they would normally get.

I don't mind this type of advertising as much as I do the miracle cream ads.  Or, what about those ads where they show before and after pics and it's REALLY obvious that the models are just sucking in their stomachs!  LOL

So you're ranting because we made fun of a pair of shoes that no one knew you had?

PS: like already indicated, no one is making fun of walking. How did you reach that conclusion?

As you can see above the original thread said that "Apparently "walking" is some sort of "exercise"" which makes it seem that they don't think walking is an exercise, just an "exercise".

But my point is really that you should not make fun of any way anyone wants to exercise.  And if you have not tried the products you should not be judging them.  Any exercise anyone does can be brought back to the objects they are using to get the exercise done, as in maybe you should not be going to a gym, as the gym is not a natural state of exercise, like say gardening or raking or shoveling is.  See what I mean?  The weights at the gym are just replacements for moving bolders around.  The Fitflops and the MBT's are just replacements for walking barefoot on the sand.  SO I believe bashing shoes just makes people feel bad, and may keep them from even trying to exercise since what they are using/doing is just not good enough.  And I do have MBT's and they do work.  I walk my kids down the street to school everyday, for one year I walked in the lower MBT's and then got used to them, bought the higher ones, and the first time I walked down to the school and back in my new MBT's my butt and the back of my legs got really sore.  I actually only use them for that and walking around doing errands, or going to the mall.  But that is more exercise than walking around in just regular sneakers, which I use to jog and weight lift.

OH MY GOD no one is making fun of walking. I was making fun of the fact that apparently walking is only exercise when activated by the $50 flip flops as VS, which by the way I will continue to laugh at. Fine, walk around in your MBTs and love it. I'm not stopping you.

I had to throw this passage in.  These shoes have a higher toe than heel, and help align the body and flatten the stomach!  Let's all run out and buy them!

What makes Earth Footwear different?

The primary point of difference with Earth Footwear is Kalso® Negative Heel Technology™. Its unique design actually positions one's toes higher than their heels. The incline is slight - 3.7 degrees - but the significant benefit is that Kalso Negative Heel Technology helps to shift your weight back over your heels, and moves you into a more natural, empowered, position. Walking and standing becomes more anatomically correct, and more efficient, unlocking an array of whole-body benefits including better leg and calf toning, tighter thighs, firmer stomach muscles, straighter posture, and better breathing.

Does all Earth footwear have Kalso® Negative Heel Technology™?

Yes. In most every style, the feature is incorporated into the design of the sole. In certain styles, the 3.7 degree incline is actually incorporated into the construction of the footbed. In either case, the whole-body benefits generated by the technology are the same since the foot is effectively positioned at the same angle.

Why is the angle 3.7 degrees?

Designed by a Danish yoga master, the 3.7 degrees of Kalso® Negative Heel Technology™ simulates the angle of one's feet during the Tadasana pose performed in yoga. At this angle, one's toes are positioned higher than one's heels, directing primary cushioning to the most weight-bearing part of the foot - the heel pad. This angle further shifts one's body weight back over the heels, moving you into a more natural, empowered position. This becomes the proper body position to trigger an array of whole-body benefits. It's a rather small change that makes a sizable difference.

How long does it take to get adjusted to Kalso® Negative Heel Technology™?

Like most any new experience for the body, periods of adjustment can vary from individual to individual. Most people adapt right a way. For those who may have a pre-existing foot condition, or who wear high heels, the transition can take a bit longer, and can involve some minor discomfort. In these cases, we recommend that the individual consult a medical professional so the adjustment to a neutral foot and body position can precede their shoe selection. A series of exercises can complement the transition to Earth Footwear so the foot and body are able to properly welcome the whole-body benefits of the footwear from a sound foundation.
i'm not going to buy them, but i believe it.  all of our fancy, supportive athletic shoes make it really easy for our feet to be lazy.  anyone who's done yoga can tell you this.  yoga toes anyone?

who remembers when birkenstocks came out?  they were marketed as exercise sandals for the feet.  you were supposed to keep the straps loose so that your feet had to work to keep them from flying off.

these were on the Today show or the good Morning America show like three years ago.  (well, between two and three years, that was the last time I had cable and watched morning television) who knows if they work.

btw, flip flops tend to aggravate sore leg conditions like shin splints, sore knees and sore hips.  just fyi...

hahha, pgeorgian, thats so funny.  you do have to work to keep Birks on your feet!!  you have to kinda squench your toes and that makes shins hurt.  hahah, I am actually LOL... :)

I can't wear thongs/flip flops with the thing between the toes.  I wear the slippers.  Mine come from Hilo Hattie (Made in USA, $6).  I can't wear them outside here in AZ because there are too many rocks and no sidewalks. I can't imagine spending $50 for them.

I used to have a pair of Earth Shoes, 35 years ago.  And walking is great exercise.

Embarassed I'm about to admit this out loud, but I have a pair of the Fit Flops. *hang head down in shame*

I want to say I got them about a year ago and the only way you are going to get lean legs is by walking ten miles at a time in them.  Sure, it's the shoe!  hahaha

Now for the big shocker......they don't work!  I wear them on the weekends sometimes when running *walking* errands because I did pay $49.99 for them.  But of course they are just an expensive pair of flip flops.  Nothing more, nothing less.

I bought a pair of the Fit Flops at Bath & Body Works about a month or so ago.. i had a gift card from x-mas still.. Anyways, I didnt really buy them because of the 'fitness' advertising, i tried on a pair and they were really quite comfortable.. I have extremely wide feet, so finding sandals and shoes can be very frustrating for me. I'm not really sure if they help with leg toning or not, havent really noticed a difference, but they are very comfortable to walk around in.

FWIW, I have 3 pairs of Earth flip flops, and I love them. I do find that spending time in them works my legs in a slightly different way, especially my calves. But I bought them because they are good for my flat feet, not for a "workout."

On that note - I asked my (crazy) chiropractor about yoga toes, and he said that unless you are spending a lot of time in high heels, you don't need them. He looked at my feet and said I wouldn't benefit from them.

However, he did notice that I have the beginning of bunions - just a little bit of a bumb on the side of the base of my big toes.  I asked him what I could do, and he told me to try, while standing, moving my big toe out and back in, so that it moves like a windshield wiper. Needless to say, I couldn't do it. He can, but he said that for people who aren't used to using their toes (he learned to use them for martial arts) it can take two months of trying to actually get the toe to move like that. But, he assured me, trying to do this every day will strengthen the muscle and keep the bunion from forming.

Anyone ever heard of this? I guess for the 5 seconds a day it takes to try, it might be worth it, if it means I won't have to have surgery some day.

I actually use the yoga toes and love them.  I do spend a lot of time in heels because I work in an office and I've found that the yoga toes really help stretch out my feet.  I doubt that they do all that they claim to do (read: fix hammer toes and bunions and plantar fasciatis, etc.) but to me they feel really good.  I sometimes get sore muscles in the arches of my feet from running or jumping rope and the yoga toes always feel like a good stretch.

I just tried moving my big toe out and back and I couldn't do it without lifting up all my other toes or moving my foot a little bit.  I think I'm starting to get bunions as well, so I'll try doing that too.  It can't hurt right?
