REALLY violent reaction to Trans fats? (VERY Gross story warning)

Quote  |  Reply

Ok so, long story short. I haven't had Trans Fats in years. Not to toot my own horn, but I tend to, generally, eat healthier than a good 90% of Americans :)

We had these frozen pizzas in the fridge for a few months and I never really had the urge to eat them. Well, yesterday I finally got the urge to eat them.

A few hours later after I ate the pizza, I got some rumbling in my stomach. I thought it was just one of those random sounds our stomachs make from time to time. Usually when you need to do "number 2" you have a good hour or two that you can hold it in before anything bad happens. <_<

That's not what happened. I did not have the urge to do number 2 before the stomach rumble. Right after the stomach rumbe, I needed to do number 2! Milliseconds after. When I ran to the bathroom, it felt like someone literally turned on a faucet. I was on the toilet for a good 10 minutes with diarrhea.

Nothing like this ever happened to me before. I immediately thought it was something I ate. I found the pizza boxes in the trash and read the caloric content/ingredients list and I found that they had Trans Fats.

So why would I think this "reaction" was caused by Trans fats? Well, for one, I never eat TFs and so I can't imagine my stomach being very "accepting" of them. (I'm not willing to eat anymore TF foods to retry this experiment)

This isn't the first time I had a bad reaction to something "unhealthy." About 5 years ago I used to be a heavy smoker and didn't have another cigarette for about 4 years after I quit. After that one cigarette something strange happened. I got REALLY sick. I started getting cold sweats and I thought I was going to vomit and do number 2 on the train ride home. =O (This I did retry and the same scenario occured)

Could this have been a response by my body to trans fats? If not, what could have caused that reaction?

Getting sick from the cigarette makes complete sense to me; it's a stick of poison being inhaled.

As for the pizza - could they have been expired, if they were in your freezer for a few months?

Or, is it possible you had a negative reaction to the cheese on it?  I'm lactose intolerant, and I have very much the same reaction after I've ingested anything with dairy in it.

I'm not sure if trans fats can cause that reaction - maybe it could just be that your body isn't used to anything highly processed anymore?

I'm not sure about the trans fat, but it sounds like it was old and expired.

Yes, I wonder if you got a bad pizza.

Yeah probably way past its 'eat by' date.

I have this problem, it happened after I cut fried foods out of my diet for a year.  I can't eat anything too oily anymore without... you know, as well as intestinal cramping and bloating.

Maybe our bodies just like the way we were doing things, and this result isn't such a bad thing since it enforces a moderate consumption of fats?

Seconding the lactose intolerance idea as it's exactly the same way my body reacts to many dairy items, including ice cream :-( some cheeses, milk, etc. (Oddly this doesn't seem to happen with real homemade whipped cream. Yay for the small stuff!) Also, since you have been eating so healthfully, your body might be rebelling against the processed junk. Continue eating well and do share your recipes if you have the time and inclination.....

i personally have the same problem if i ever try to eat too much fried or fast food.  i can stomach a few french fries but if i eat a whole meal of just greasy foods, they go "right through me" along with any other fast food.  i don't know if it's transfat, but i don't try it enough to really pin point the cause.  if i eat a smaller portion with something fiberous, like veggies, i can stomach it.  i don't think it's just transfat or just dairy but rather super rich/fatty foods in general.

last time it happened, i had some really rich foods at my wedding, and one night i had some type of cheesy spinach pastry for dinner covered in creamy sauce with nothing else to help digest.  i know it wasn't the food was bad, because it was a really nice restuarant and no one else got sick.  i was on the toliet for 10 minutes shortly after as well but immodium helped...
