Can vitamin B12 injections aid in weight loss?
Asked by amandacornett on Aug 01, 2008 in Weight Loss

My mother has been getting B12 injections from her nutritionist, and swears that they are helping. I can't afford to see a nutritionist (or the cost of the shots) and was wondering if B12 really helps. If so, would supplements have the same effect?

Answer

There is no evidence that vitamin B12 injections or shots are effective for weight loss. Vitamin B12 injections are indicated for the treatment of Pernicious Anemia caused by a B12 deficiency and to compensate for incomplete absorption of the vitamin due to faulty digestion in elderly people.  Your mother is probably experiencing the placebo effect, where a substance with no therapeutic activity has an effect based on the power of suggestion.
