Vitamin A - CC RDA out of date

Quote  |  Reply

In fact doubly out of date.

CC gives 5000 IU as the RDA.

In 2001 the RDA was reduced from 1500mcg (5000 IU) to 900mcg (3000 IU). See, e.g. http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/vitamin s/vitaminA/ or Whitney & Rolfe's "Understanding Nutrition" 11th ed., 2008.

Compounded by the usage of outdated IUs - why not the standard mcg?

Furter complicated by some odd mixture of retinol & beta-carotene. Any chance of distinguishing the two - it is important.

RDA for VitA (retinol) is 900 mcg with a MAX of 3000 mcg.

Significant potential danger for those taking vitamin supplements, although I believe that most manufacturers have replaced retinol with beta-carotene (which is not a problem).

RAEs (Retinol Activity Equivalents - primarily from beta-carotene) are much used but note that, effectively, there is no maximum for beta-carotene because the body will only convert as much of it as it needs into retinol.
