I went shopping for vitamins yesterday, and I must say that it is overwhelming. How do you know what ones are the good ones and worth the money? Do I just need a multivitamin, or do I need supplements too?

I guess what I want to ask is: Do you take vitamins? How much do you spend on vitamins and supplements? What supplements do you take and why? Do you think that they work?

I take all chewable vitamins... I do not take multivitamins religiously since you canreach 100% of my daily value without them.  Here they are:

  • MultiVites Gummy Vitamins for Adults (vitafusion) -- I take 1 or 2 a day (serving size is 2) This particular brand is ridiculously cheap, maybe $5.00.
  • Chewable 500 mg vitamin C -- I take 2-4 almost every day.  Generic, cheap.
  • SolaRay B-Complex Chewable: High Potency Stress Formula -- I take 1/2 every so often.  I used to be better about taking them regularly and you should look into a daily B-complex since you're going veg.
  • Trader Joe's brand Very Green concentrated green formula -- it's almost identical to SuperGreens which are AWESOME but only costs $11 for 180 capsules.  I take 2-4 a day and also take these pretty regularly.
  • Calcium -- any doctor will tell you that as an adult female you should be taking at least 500 mg of supplement a day.

High there, I am quite skeptical of taking lab made vitamins because I prefer getting the vitamins and minerals through food. I do take spirulina everyday. It's blue-green alga, packed with vitamins and protein...other than that, I just eat 5 (or more) a day.

I don't take a multivitamin, but after logging a few days of what I'm eating, I'm starting to think I should be.  I do not hit good levels on really any of the vitamin areas.  It's kind of embarassing actually.  I've always thought of myself as a 80/20 eater (80% healthy, 20% don't worry about it), but maybe I'm wrong.  :-/

That all being said, I do take Lysine about every other day because I get cold sores and 'tis the season.  It's supposed to help ward them off.  I also take vitamin E sporadically, and chewable calcium when I think about it, which is not very often.

I started taking multivitamins because I also discovered through logging food that I wasn't getting enough. I'm a poor college student so I currently I'm taking:

Target Brand daily multivitamins: honestly I don't really think there is much difference compared to more expensive brands. It all has to do with corporate marketing and consumer identity IMO, which is all BS

Nature Made Odorless Fish Oil pills: I take these because apparently Omega 3 fatty acids are good for brain function, skin and hair etc. I've convinced myself that it helps with studying and such but all the drinking and partying I do probably counteracts all of it's benefits haha! Whatever, I take them so I feel better about myself :)

I agree with you "effers" :)

I dont think there would be much difference between brands..

I take Calcium supplements and Fish Oil Pills and a mulitvitamin but no point telling u brands or cost cos im in NZ and I assume it will be different.. :)

I take calcium tablets because of the importance of it for young women which is drummed into you by doctors. I take Fish Oil for the same reason as effers and i take a multivitamin cos I went to a Damian Kristoff seminar once and he got into my head that whilst eating healthily, u can benefit more by taking one..? Helps you absorb the goodness from what your eating, so if your eating well, take one and you will benefit greatly?!! If that makes sense I do realise it sounds lame but it was enough for me.. :D

Almost forgot to ask, does anybody take ah "fat burning" type things? Like with L-Cartenine or whatever in it? I did over a year ago and THINK it worked (as in, not sure if it was all just lifestyle change etc or was just in my head...) and so was contemplating purchasing some more...? Do you think they work?

I take:

Generic brand Women's Multivitamin

B-Complex (said to speed up metabolism - not sure of effects but haven't noticed any bad side effects)

Magnesium (said to help prevent migraines, which I get a lot) - I cut the 500 mg pill in half and take half each day.

I was taking fish oil for a few days, but I hated the fish-tasting burps it gave me. Is that the benefit to getting the odorless kind?

There is calcium in my multivitamin, and I drink a lot of milk, so I think I'm ok on that front for now.

Does anyone have any positive or negative opinions about birth control (any brand) and it's positive or negative effects on weight?

I work in a pharmacy, and we get this question a lot.  Unfortunately since the point of BC pills is to alter our hormones, every single brand effects everyone differently.  What made me gain weight, made my roommate lose weight and have huge boobs overnight.

If you notice any huge negative changes, definitely contact either your pharmacy or doctor and see if they can get it changed for you.

Something to consider are the low dose regimens, so it is contains just enough of the ingredient to help in contraception.

Again, not a doctor, just observations :o)
