Vitamins and nausea?

Quote  |  Reply

Part of my diet/healthy lifestyle includes taking a daily vitamin. But I think it's making me nauseous. The other day I felt nauseous all day and ended up throwing up late at night. Today walking to class I felt like I was going to again be sick. I think I have narrowed it down to this vitamin I am taking and not a particular food. I take it after breakfast (and I eat a big breakfast) so it's not like I'm taking it on an empty stomach. I also take it with a couple other medications (birth control pill, for example) that have never bothered my stomach.

So my question is, has anyone else experienced this and if so, can you recommend any solutions or vitamin brands that did not bother your stomach?

 Thanks!

I've had the same problem with vitamins.  I used to take one for "active" people and I started cutting them in half--that helped.  Now I take a regular one but sometimes skip a day.  I still get a little nauseous but it's not nearly as bad.
Yes, my vitamin is for active people as well. Thanks!
Take it with your morning meal. I take a whole vitamin and it makes me sick about 1/2 hour later if I don't take it with food. I take mine with breakfast. If you're already doing that, then splitting it will help too.

Good Luck :)

If I don't drink alot of water after taking mine I will feel nauseous. Even when I eat I still have to drink a bunch of water to avoid feeling nauseous.
I've been having this problem too.  I eat mine with my breakfast but if I only eat cereal and milk I feel nauseous like 5 minutes after I'm done eating.  I ended up eating a few crackers to help calm it and it helped.  Whenever I have like a egg-white sandwhich it doesn't happen so I think some vitamins need some kind of bread like food to help soak up the nutrients? I dunno though..that's the best theory I could think of.
Read the instructions on the label and google the specific brand with nausea and see what pops up.  Some vitamins shouldn't be taken with others or some foods.  I like the idea of cutting it in half if it works for you.
I was having this same problem with my multi-vitamin.

Does your multi-vitamin contain iron. Because that is a common problem with iron. A lot of the times I would take my vitamin with a meal (which is what is recommended when consuming vitamins with iron) and still feel a bit nauseas and have to have a bit more to calm my stomach.

You might want to try a vitamin without iron. Iron is generally easily obtained through healthy eating habits. But I am anemic (due to an eating disorder not because it's hard to get iron in your diet) so I take the ones with iron to try to get that back up to normal.
vitamins with irons can make you sick. I switched from with iron to without and stop getting sick.  If your eating your green fresh veggies than your probably don't need the added iron.

Well I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one.   Thank you to everyone for the tips.  Cutting in half and no iron...got it.  Thanks!!!

this happens to me too.  if you are like me and NEED the iron that the multivitamin provides this is some advice i can give: i find that drinking a lot of water afterwards and then chewing on gum helps to calm my stomach.

this works for me, hopefully it works for you!

I have the same problem.  If I eat a small meal and take them I still get sick.  What I have to do is take my vitamin with my largest meal.  Then I'm fine.  I take One A Day (regualar) but when I took the One A Day Active I got really sick.   Try taking it with your largest meal and see if it helps.

lol I switched to kid vitamins (flinstones to be exact) because my womens one a day made me nauseous. Wink
