Vitamins taste horrible...

Quote  |  Reply

Since I'm on a diet (and even if I weren't), I figured I should start taking my vitamins again. Currently I'm taking One-a-Day Women's.

I gag everytime I have to swallow this thing. You guys have to know the taste I'm talking about right? It's like chalky...and...nauseating...I'm sure this is what dirt tastes like. The pill is large enough that I'm pretty sure I'd choke on it on an unlucky day. I've tried holding my breath to keep from tasting it and drinking the pill with strong-tasting drinks (V8, Diet Coke), to no avail.

So...what vitamin supplement brands do you guys take? Any smaller pills? Any pills that don't taste so horrible? Please, help! I need vitamin supplements, but these are awful!

Rite-aid brand multi vitamins are the size of an advil.
Viactiv's (calcium) taste like tootsie rolls (cant beat that)

Those are the two I actually like and dont make me sick.
I still take Flintstone's (with extra iron).  My doc says they're just as good.
ive had that problem... i gag REALLY easily, especially if it has any kind of herb or green tea in it... centrums is the one i use... has a slight orange taste but thats it :)

Thanks, guys! Any more suggestions? :)

I originally picked up One-A-Day's because they had more calcium than other brands. However, it might be better to try another brand and get that extra calcium with Viactiv at this rate...

Also, there are no Rite-Aids down in Houston :(

Ahh poo!

What about GNC? Everytime I could actually afford to buy stuff there the staff was fantastic and well educated on the products. And not just one store either. I really like shopping there for this kinda stuff. They may even suggest some vitamin shake if you like that kinda stuff.

Those green tea ones are NASTY. They almost made me and my O.H. throw up when we took them. We had to sit there for 30 minutes and concentrate to NOT just go BLAAAAAAAAAAAH.
I am never getting those again. EVER!
I use a store brand that's exactly the same as Centrum.

When I take a vitamin, I put water in my mouth first, then pop the pill so it doesn't touch my tongue.

I take the nature's made vitamin for women.  I don't normally notice a taste when I swallow it.  occasionally I hold it in my mouth for a few seconds and then I taste it.

You could also look for one that comes in a capsule instead of a pill.

i take flinstones too!! =) pretty tasty as far as vitamins go, and they actually have almost the same ingredients as adult vitamins!
I take these ones made by viactive.  They have a berry flavored coating so they don't taste so gross going down.  I think they have vanilla flavor too.
My DH and I take the store-brand (Wal-mart) version of Centrum Silver, and they have that silverish-white coating (same as what was on my prenatal vitamins years ago) - as long as I don't keep them in my mouth too long or break them (they are pretty big), I don't taste them.  At least not while TAKING them.  Anything with iron in it always stands a chance of coming back to haunt you later, sad to say.

If it's really bad, then you may want to try a pill wrap.

Since you take your vitamins with/after meals (so you can absorb the nutrients), try flattening out a small square of cream cheese, place the vitamin on top, then cover the vitamin.  You will taste the cream cheese (yummy! :D )This has worked with my human patients and I've even used it when having to give large pills to my cats.

:)

Get a mini-multivitamin instead. I bought the 'mini-vitamin' at the Vitamin Shoppe because I find it very hard to swallow pills. It's about the size of a pain pill and it has no flavour at all.

I also get the Viactiv chocolate chews, and I love them. I've never taken vitamins daily before, but they're so tasty and easy that it's no inconvenience to munch 'em! They have a Multi-V and a Calcium.

i had no idea viactiv made a soft chew multi! i use the centrum orange "chewable" and it's friggin' nasty.

i just went to viactiv's site and printed off a dollar coupon for the chewable multi-v. hopefully, i'll look forward to taking my vitamin now!

update: i bought the chocolate viactiv multi-vitamins as soon as i posted my last message here. they're awesome! for the 1st time in my life, i'm taking a vitamin every day, faithfully! and i look forward to it! they taste like little chocholate chews, so it's like i'm getting a chocolate treat every night.

thanks for the tip!

The Viactiv multi chews are good and I took them for a while. However, I had to switch as they have NO Iron! I couldn't figure out why my levels were dropping (they would check when I would go donate blood) and finally dawned on me to check the vitamins. They might have changed, but they had no Iron when I was taking them. Since I was eating "healthier" and less red meat (none actually), there was a significant drop!

Just make sure you are getting enough Iron. Evidently, I wasn't!

I still take the calcium chews. They are awesome!
i'll check on that mistymom. thanks! i tend to be anaemic from time to time, so that's really important.
Costco sells gummy vitamins for kids.  I tried them once, not quite a gummy bear but ok.
